The original building burnt down in 1948 and the current one opened in 1951.
Wetherspoons from the rumours I heard. Makes a change from the usual M&S or Monorail station rumours...
I don't like Wetherspoons, but they've done some amazing building renovations in Dublin. If true you'd assume ground floor bar with hotel in the upper floors similar to their premises at Camden St in Dublin.
Dont know when it was built but at least the main building doesnt look too bad. The rest of that block is horrible looking and Ide love to see it gone
This is what used to be there
Yea thats what was there in the past, i heard a roumer that it was knocked for "looking British", so i dont think it was even burned down which appeared to happen most places in Limerick with architectural interest
Seeing as you obviously didn't read a few posts up the thread, where I replied to your original post, I'll post it again.
From the above old picture they look like two seperate buildings that are just joined, did they both burn down?
The building on the left of the photo is McBirneys, which became Roches Stores in 1937 and burnt down in 1948 to be replaced by the current building in 1951.
From the clock tower down to the right is Cannocks, which was refurbished and 'modernised' in 1961 and sold to Penneys in 1980. The did their own refurbishment and extension in the late 80s/early 90s.
This the same block in 1968.
I think the Roches/Debenhams building has a kind of cool art deco thing going on. It pains me to see what has replaced the old Cannocks building that is now the hideous redbrick building housing Penneys.

Has not been open this week. Shelves emptied etc etc.
Anyone know if it’s a big revamp or permanently closing - would love to see the seafood bar reopen as it was originally….
A new bubble tea shop is opening on Wednesday in the old O'Connors butchers on William Street.
Is that the first one in Limerick ?
There was one a few years ago where the Wild Onion is now across from the Hunt museum.
Forgive my ignorance, but what's a "bubble tea shop"?

Saw these shops all over Chinatown in London and seemed insanely popular with asian kids and was catching on big time with other kids too
When I was working for a very short time in California where my company had about 70% Taiwanese staff they were always going to those places locally and I went a few times and frankly I used to just say "get me whatever, I don't know what the stuff is" and mostly they were nice but not often cheap. Likely they won't be cheap here then either.
First time I had one(with their massively wide straws) I nearly choked as I didn't know there were balls in it, flew up straw and nearly choked in the car park. Good times.
Things like this are quite fashionable, I go with my Nieces to a coffee shop and they ask for loads of ingredients in their drinks so this might catch on and for the business sake hopefully not a fad like "smoothies, milkshakes, donuts" etc
Found this article saying Premier Inn are looking at sites in Limerick.
I stayed in the one in Glasgow which was converted from the old tax office into a hotel.
Another possibility for Debenhams? There aren't many city center sites available for a large hotel.
Would be great if they bought the railway hotel. It's such an eyesore at the moment.
Will sadly probably sit derelict until this big station area redevelopment that we will be waiting 20 years for
The Glenthworth would be the easy option
Anyone know what's moving into Sarsfield St. opposite the bus stop.
Company called duo Ireland https://duoireland.com/
That's the place on Denmark St, assuming they're just moving to a new location.
Moving for the extra space according to Instagram
Planning application gone in to convert Homebase retail unit in the parkway to a large sports retailer. Seems to fit the bill of Decathlon.
I spotted that alright, but wasn't 100% sure it was that unit. Strange that there's been no word of Homebase closing.
Saw that just now on the planning site. Be interesting to see the testing and display area they mention in the application.
"change of use to allow the sale of a range of bulky and non-bulky sporting, recreation and leisure related products, including technical sports clothing, sports footwear and sports nutrition products and associated ancillary goods; use of existing garden centre as a testing and display area for products sold onsite; internal and external modifications to facilitate the proposed change of use; and all associated works necessary to facilitate the development"

I did spend a while researching the applicant and who is behind it and who is then behind them, as the details so far on ePlan are very limited. It goes all the way to Los Angeles with a hedge fund as well. It was nigh on impossible to find any links to clients/ventures, let alone Decathlon. Bennett construction is certainly involved from what I can see.
The Squire McGuire is meant to be reopening tomorrow, Friday.
Spoke to the man in the Heineken van parked outside and he said that it was no longer Tommy but new management.
