Another "forever young" types along with the likes of McDermott.
paula macsweeney is back on early breakfast on Monday
It seems to be a cycle in there, though. Whoever is on the later shift will eventually get shafted, especially if they're on a weekend slot - presumably because they're not bringing in the numbers, even though a weekend late evening slot will never bring in the numbers. Paul, Kelly-Anne Byrne, Dave Couse... Entirely agree with you, though, Paul as (is!) a great DJ, and it's Today FM's loss. He's releasing regular playlists on Spotify, but unfortunately doesn't seem to be doing the podcast thing - he only put out the one that I can find.
It's interesting that people are still talking about Ed Smith been moved later but most people seem to have forgotten Paul Mcloone. McLoone was one of the longest serving Today FM presenters and his show had been on air since 1999 (originally hosted by Tom Dunne) so I always thought scrapping him and the show would have been the most controversial move for the station.
Wow, another interview with Jennifer Hudson on D&D, she was only on the show a few days ago
No argument from me there but Cal also has this notion that he's an old fashioned southern gentleman and someone as boorish as Trump does not appeal to his sensibilities. Sadly he is a reflection of where the republican party is at right now although you are right that there will never be a civilised adult discussion between himself and McKeown and Cooper is more than happy to let them at it.
Cal Thomas has always toned himself down for the Irish market. He's an out-and-out Islamophobe and homophobe! It'd be perfectly possible to get a "normal" Republican on to balance Marian McKeown, but Matt appears to prefer the frothing and constant whataboutery from Thomas.
Yeah, it's clear he abhors Trump but Cal has to say what his Fox paymasters tell him to say. Can't break with the party line even when he knows he's talking nonsense.
Very entertaining Culture Club yesterday with Anton Savage, a reminder of how good Today FM used to be
Cals got much more normal now. He was loosing his mind rapidly the longer he was exposed to cult of Trump.
Yes, the Last Word just needs more contributors who have the same opinion as the host and all of the production team.
Sounds like the awards announcer on Father Ted to me " authorities were confused by what they saw as bizzare irregularities in his accounts"
Tbh I'm amazed that the owners haven't found a way to get rid of the last word by now.
Fully expecting them to expand that 5@5 and 6@6 bullsh!t to the traffic updates:
Cooper: I believe there was a crash on the M50 north bound.
AA person: Yes Matt there was a crash on the M50 north bound at junction 7, expect delays.
Cooper: And can you tell us about these 4 kilometer tail backs at the dunkettle interchange?
AA person: yes, avoid this interchange if you can due to 4 kilometre tail backs Matt.
The 6@6 and 5@5 segments are awful but I think the worst has to be when Cal Thomas is on. I don't know why he needs to be on Irish radio.
The Last Word is all about repetition now, less actual discussion, more ads.
"Now we have the Six at Six on the Last Word on Today FM, ans our first story is about Simon Coveney and Zappone gate, and how he has not yet stepped down, can you tell us more, Mr 6@6 man?"
"Yes Matt, I will repeat what you just said with a little more detail, here on the Last Word on Today FM, possibly punctuated by an interview with someone who will repeat the guts of the story for a third time."
"Thank you Mr 6@6 man. Now for our second story here on the Last Word on Today FM, a woman in Galway has reported seeing Jesus in her loaf of bread, can you give me more details that I couldn't have just said?"
Repeat ad nauseum for 10 minutes.
They probably expect that people just listen in for 15-20 minutes during car journeys or to hear specific parts of the show. So if someone gives the show a try during their car journey, they'll hopefully remember what the show and station was for next time they're channel hopping.
I'm finding it slightly irritating that they remind us so often what radio station we are listening to.
The last word is particularly bad for it. You'd lose count the number of times he says, "received a text into The Last Word on Today FM " or to a departing guest, "thanks for joining us here on the Last Word on Today FM".
It's the one newsroom for all bauer stations but the stations have their own individual newsreaders, especially at peak times
Aren't the news bulletins shared with other stations now? Very like IRN and INN back in the day.
You. Mean. The. One. That. Pro. Nounce. Es. Ev. Er. E. Syl. A. Bel. Like. They. Are. In. Div. Id. U. Ally. Punc. Tu. Ate. Ed?
She pauses between every word, and some syllables, it's really annoying to listen to. Like trying desperately hard not to read a single word wrong or something? I thought in the first week she was on that it was nerves, but she's been there for ages now and still doing it. it's like my 5 year old nephew learning to read.
Previously with the old news readers, Ian used to have a bit of banter going on with them after the news, but that seems to rarely happen now. They did it for a bit with this new reader, but I've noticed in the last couple of months that it's basically stopped. I wonder is this a station decision to make it more formal, or what? It's losing personality by doing it anyway.
I've been listening to Ian in the mornings a bit recently, she definitely is not an easy listen.
Iano seems to be just trying to fill air time too and seems like he's been made do some of that content creating stuff which doesn't suit him or his style at all.
Totally agree! I can’t listen to her at all!
Anyone find the liners really annoying?? where they promote programmes/sponsorship such as "...ON (pause) Today FM" or "....WITH (pause) Sky"
I find that girl that presents the news on Ian Dempsey to have a really strange tone of voice for the news. It's like she's reading good news for the whole slot, if that makes sense?
I loved the radio more back around 6 or 7 years ago tbh.
I liked Ray on Today Fm.
I used to love Dermot and Dave when they were on 98fm. Anyone remember the guy they used to have one, pretending to be a chef or something. Always ended his bit with "everything's better with chocolate!"
Or maybe the radio wasn't more enjoyable back then, maybe I just associate it with periods in my life.
You’re absolutely right. Apologies and sorry for your loss
It's not my place to paraphrase the women in my life who I have lost and who have survived cancer treatment and this is not the correct forum for that discussion. Public radio is, however.
What do you mean by “have drawn a short straw when it comes to cancer detection, treatment and care”?
It obviously is secondary, when they barely even acknowledged Charlie Watts death last week.
EDIT - I see that was the point of the initial discussion
