Pressure off what?!
He'll be taking a good break after the Ryder Cup I imagine.
He's firmly in the top 50 players in the world and just finished in the top 50 of the Fed Ex Cup. If he hits a quite spell he has exemptions for all the majors and the PGA tour from the Open.
He's under no pressure to need to play in weaker events to get a win. He's earned the right to plan his schedule around the big events and I'm sure he'll continue to do so.
He's an elite golfer, no matter how many on this thread don't want to acknowledge such.
Edit: Sorry, post is a little unnecessarily antagonistic, just don't think Shane needs to worry about anything for the foreseeable.
Nope, hasn't done enough. He's out.
Well I couldn't care less about the Ryder Cup but good to see Shane playing a bit more consistent over the last while. I hope he plays a few of the early PGA tour events, he might nab a win and take a bit of pressure off.
If he sticks with what he's been doing over the last while then next year could be a really good one.
Sergio with a lucy locket on the 10th as well when trying to play from behind a tree. Another bogey shipped. Nothing is ever easy with Sergio :D
Sergio flying it in the final round -4 under after 4. Then takes 3 to get out of the bunker at the 5th ---->double bubble. 😯
Qualification works as follows:
1. Top 4 from European points list from European tour
2. Top 5 from the world points list not already qualified from the European points list
3. Three captains picks.
Today's result for Shane will make very little difference apart from maybe moving closer to Westwood on the points list if Westwood finishes poorly today.
The risk for Shane is actually from the European points list. Wiesberger is only a few points behind McIlroy at the moment and if he passes McIlroy out it will knock McIlroy off the automatic European qualifying spots but in turn will mean he takes a spot on the world points list at Lowry's expense.
A few decent performances over the next 2 events by Wiesberger will achieve that as Rory is not playing any European events before the final cutoff do cannot earn any more race to dubai points. So Shane is in a very vulnerable position and might very well rely on a wildcard pick in that case. If Wiesberger misses the next 2 cuts or finishes well down the field then it looks like Shane is safe unless someone like Perez wins.
As I said in a previous post I don't agree with the qualification system as it gives too much weight to the European tour compared to its quality level, but that's an argument for a different day.
Sergio could actually do him a massive favour today if he plays himself into the team. Shane far more likely to be one of the 3 wildcard picks if Sergio doesn't need one of them.
Only is a favour of course if Weisberger actually was to knock Shane out anyway.
At the same time I guess his performance today solidified his automatic choice on the Ryder Cup team? Or is it the opposite?
No. He'll fall a good bit short. He finished the 18th projected 38 and is out to 44 now. If anything he'll move out rather than in.
Great last round all the same. Poor first round left him with an uphill battle.
He won't make it unfortunately.
Had heard Shane would need a top 10 to make the last round of the FedEx. Any ideas if he might have done enough today
I suppose you could argue either way. Despite my worry earlier I do see him getting a pick regardless. Look at him today. Just outside the top 10 at the moment. Consistently making cuts on the PGA tour and in majors. I wouldn't put it past him winning in Wentworth either.
Even taking the green tinted glasses off, objectively he has to get a pick based on current form. Short of a win for Rose, Stenson or Noren over the next 2 weeks I don't see that changing. He's in better form than half the current European team at the moment.
Edit: Another point though I think is unfair is the ridiculous points allocation for the last 3 events in Europe along with double points awarded. Completely weights the weaker events in Europe ahead of stronger events world wide. Why is the world points list not enough? Playing in Europe gets you points towards both lists.
A little to late for me. Needed to do it yesterday
Shane going very well so far today, -6 through 14.😊
Fair point. The gap between Wiesberger and McIlroy is now quite small and I think it is very likely that Wiesberger will pick up enough points over the next two events to move up to 4th in the list.
Rory MCILROY 4,810.1752
Bernd WIESBERGER 4,692.45
Not sure the value of it to be honest. He's not going to advance from the European list unless he gets a win at least. If he loses out it will be because Rory gets passed out on the European list.
Not sure how many OWGR point Wiesberger got for today but I'm assuming Shane is still a decent amount ahead and a decent round today could pad that out a bit (currently - 9 in 25th position).
It looks like Shane is not going to make it to the Tour Championship (unless he can break 60 today) and I wonder whether it would make sense for him to play in Italy next week. He's not currently on the entry list, so it may be too late for him to enter.
Agreed. Might be hard to pick himself up after this. Next few weeks (especially Wentworth) will have stronger fields which will make it more difficult. He has the quality though but I would doubt him when fields are stronger though.
Wiesberger playing the next 2 weeks and is now a lot closer to moving into top 4 on European points list though, so he can still quite easily make it.
God that’s cruel on Wiesberger, but probably good for RC team as Lowry is a better player IMO.
agree on Rasmus, 3 wins at 20 is incredible.
Shane must have the voodoo doll out :)
Ramus will be a future multiple Ryder Cupper, so would be great to see him wrap up another win.
Wow!
Wiesberger in the water on the last!
😬 Game over so unless Lowry wins it.
Let's hope Rose, Stenson etc do nothing in the next few weeks.
Edit: Wiesberger in bunker on the last... So you're saying there's a chance... 😂
Rory isn't playing Wentworth.
Looks in the bag with a couple of pars. Shane out of the automatic spots now. He'll need Rory or himself to play extremely well at Wentworth to get him back in.
I wouldn't like him to be relying on a Lowry vs Rose scenario for the last pick to be honest. Only way he is a lock if is he is in the automatic spots.
2 ahead now with an Eagle on 14.
2 clear after an eagle.
Wiesberger joint leader now....
Stenson is even behind Padraig in the world rankings, unless covid or injury intervenes he's a lock imo.
