jesus **** Christ
i think ireland have taken in a few afghan refugees in the last fews days (did i read 10 or 160?) but that will be increased.
i think the nato nations need to pay for this.
you're not alone, I feel the same. Still all this endless corona talk which still seems more or equally important as this horrific situation for the people left in Afghanistan makes me sick to my stomach and angry I don't find words. It's the first time I really feel ashamed being a european.
Just saw that, mind boggling once again. What the hell are they thinking?
Similar to what they were thinking when they left all the weapons to the useless Afghan “army” - should have done what the brits did and grind everything into dust.
Cretin on primetime asking Covney if we should have one of those big planes and if he'll be petitioning for one in the next budget despite him telling her getting people on a plane wasn't the issue it was getting them to a plane in the first instance that was the problem.
Lucky it wasn’t 12 Irish soilders killed today .
Lad just interviewed on the phone from Kabul. Here in Ireland as a Refugee. Flew back home to Afghanistan to help his mother a few weeks ago and got trapped there.
Got a phone call to say a team Rangers had flown from Ireland and were at the Airport to rescue him if he gave them his location. He said he wouldn't go unless they also brought his mother and other extended family members. They asked him for passport details etc and he wouldn't either send them or bring them to the airport because it was too dangerous to go to the airport. Rangers eventually had to leave without him as bombs went off around the airport.
Lad then goes on Prime Time and blasts the Irish Government for not doing enough to help him.
He can **** stay in Afghanistan.
Really think the Irish Rangers thing was a PR gimmick gone wrong.
We were completely dependent on foreign nations anyway I can’t see how amongst these chaos 11 Irish lads would have made an ounce of difference.
Not even on the deck 24hrs (?) and they themselves are evacuated out!?
We will never know the details but those boys know what they are at and there was a reason why they were there. Maybe randevous with Irish targets in Kabul etc.
Did the Irish Rangers rescue anyone?
Us Irish really love to put ourselves down.
All she wanted was to make the government look bad.
She doesn't care about the rangers or the people still there.
Horrible attitude.
**** RTE
It does appear that the only way to even get the remaining military out safely would be an offensive action. They cant really do that and maintain this tenuos relationship with the taliban though. Rock and a hard place. I think they should just get themselves out now and abandon whomever is left.
You have no idea what went on.
Wise up.
The army ranger thing was a mad decision by politicians not considering the long term effects on the reputation of Ireland as non NATO nation.
It was a step towards military involvement. Albeit an extraction it was an active military presence by our troops in a war zone. All on the eve of the end of that war having no part in it for 20 years.
Had our troops been killed it would have bound Martin and Coveney to George Bush the war criminal in history. A touch of irresponsible madness to the population and the future of our children in the decision albeit a very brave one.
No.
Hundreds of thousands of US people continuing to tear themselves apart on twitter in the Trump v Biden debate.
**** hell lads, we would want to stop looking at that place as some bastion of sanity to aspire to.
2 absolutely shambolic Presidents in a row.
As predicted
they went with diplomats though so maybe?
You are aware of the Irish army stationed all over the world in war zones???
I’m sure you don’t either.
My point is I believe it was a complete political decision rather than actual humanitarian one etc.
Absolutely nothing against the individuals who were sent over…
I'm pretty sure there were Irish troops in Afghanistan over the 20 years. In non-combat roles though such as planning and admin.
Well they all got out.... a mad PR stunt....
Political decision to what end though?
The withdrawal was always going to be fraught with difficulty and problems.
However it is like the people planning the last few months for America set a target of making it a generation defining f k up.
There were, would have mostly likely have been training in dealing with IED's
Is Ireland still on the security council? Looks like the UN just like the WHO, another defunded sacrificial lamb, is going to get shafted after this as the easiest target for everyone concerned. They have no power and havent had for fifty year.
I’m no fan of FF/FG but to suggest they put Irish lives on the line for no reason is a bit of a stretch. I’m not certain they would have sent the ARW.
We have no idea who they took out, where they took them from, or how they got from
where they were to the airport to get on that plane. These are not exactly things another country will do for you easily.
‘I wore the Nato logo in Afghanistan with pride... During his time in Afghanistan in 2002 and 2009,
