The withdrawal is necessary. I don't support endless wars, or most US actions anyway.
Thank you.
I'm no foreign policy expert, but it seems obvious to me that an extended presence of foreign troops in any country (some exceptions) will result in endless low-scale warfare. So, I agree with you.
Is it time to leave Afghanistan to continue its own evolution, regardless of how terrible that may be?
Yes. You know what though - why is it always the West/US?
If the Taliban engage in atrocities the UN has the right to authorise force. Let Brazil, India etc form a UN continent.
I think Biden and this withdrawal is doing fine. This is a war. The only difference now is the intense exposure, video capture on everyone's phone, media coverage. The takeover by the taliban was inevitable and losses have been minimized.
And this might be that turning point to an end of Western military interventions, for better or worse. I mentioned earlier about that "hinge" point in history. Could it be this?
Yeh, at the height of the conflict a few years ago 700+ US and allied soldiers were being killed a year and far more soldiers from the Afghanistan army, I bet none of that got mentioned much if at all.
The objective should be to prevent Afghanistan being used as a base from which to launch Islamist attacks.
US withdrawal won't do that.
Richard Chambers
@newschambers
BBC: At least 60 killed in Kabul attacks.
At least 10 US troops killed. Bloody hell.
I much prefer Biden to Trump any day of the week but this is a disaster for him.
It's not like Islamic terrorism is a big deal in the US anyway, but it is in Europe and US/Nato actions have, far from making Europe safer, have made it more dangerous. The Manchester bomber was involved in Libya overthrowing Ghadaffi, supported by US and British/French AirPower.
Anyway you seem to supporting a forever war. And since terrorism can grow anywhere, a anywhere war.
The US suffered the largest Islamist attack in history. It's a pretty big deal.
To be occupied forever then?
And what drives Islamist terror attacks on Western countries anyway (from the perspective of those militant Islamists), but a Western military presence in Muslim countries?
The intel released this morning about the impending attack was spot on though, in fairness, they must have some good communications infiltration there.
Yes they did. 20 years ago. The response was an invasion of Afghanistan to teach the Taliban a lesson and purportedly to seize Bin Laden. However BL was in Pakistan, an ally of the US. ( I often imagine how confused people are going to be in 300 years or so reading this history). If they had defeated the Taliban and seized bin laden, then left, then job done. Instead 20 years of nation building and they effectively lose. The country collapses to the old regime in weeks, they skidaddle to the airport leaving their weaponry, and get attacked even there.
However going back in isn't an option. That would take hundreds of thousands of troops now the Taliban are, once again, entrenched. And then what?
Regardless of who the commander in chief is at the moment, this is a monumental cluster duck. They didn’t just walk out of Iraq, they have training missions still there to support the Iraqi army, why couldn’t the same be done here? So many lives lost on all sides with unfortunately very little to show for it apart from some nice Dubai / Qatar property portfolios.
It could have actually been the Taliban that passed it on, this attack isn't really in their interests either
That's a very good point, and might be very possible. I didn't think of that. But if it is, that's a good sign, surely?
From the Express 😀😏
"Meanwhile, ISIS-K, a local branch of the notorious global terrorism organisation, is amassing thousands of fighters to topple the "liberal" Taliban"
The liberal Taliban ? We really are in bizarro world if the Taliban are liberal compared to this ISIS-K lot.
i always considered the taliban and al qaeda one and the same. was reading yesterday that they are 2 different organisations, with the taliban having no role in 9/11. but did give safe haven to al qaeda.
regardless, its still a massive clusterfuck. 10 marines now dead with god knows how many civilians. lets hope the irish ranger group that went to evacuate the irish, got their job done.
The Taliban are woke libs.
Our lads didn't last very long there. What was all that about - a bit of virtue signalling from Coveney?
Von Der Leyan has condemned the attack in Kabul, and tonight Biden is in the situation room... erm..... assessing the situation
all is well.
the people of Kabul will sleep easier tonight.
Never underestimate Joe's ability to f*** things up.
As Blair commented `Imbecile`.... and no one better to know.
Yeah Blair, the war monger.
There will be immense pressure on Biden now to strike back with force. Who exactly can they bomb though. Throwing more bombs in would probably make things worse anyway.
Maybe if the word didn't go out that any Afghan person trying to leave the country will be taken care of that might have stopped the chaos at the airports and all foreign diplomats would be gone by now.
This isn't our war.
How many of the Afghan people are we expected to take in?
The whole 38 million?
I think the pressure is on him to get out and as messy as that is it's gonna all be over in the less than a week.
Today was a bad day at the office for him, but that's all.
Its a fools paradise staying in that airport taking down a plane is the next move waiting to the 31th is inviting the act maybe ISIS-L will strike but really its the taliban yank wont say until they are out of there
Biden is really stupid and a weakened president after this discision Trump with less exp was more astute and capable
Unfortunately there is nowhere else fly from currently in Afghanistan
