I wonder did any other prospective events in hotels or other venues ring FI to clarify if they could take the booking for the event. I am guessing no other venue did this yet somehow the Merrion did. If the Merrion had done this there would be a record of this and they could say which member of staff rang. Of course they won't release this information because they know it never happened. If you know you have done nothing wrong and everything you did was above board, surely you would have no problem in proving this?
I'm glad we sent such a prominent politician to Kabul, (even if it was Coveney). It was important to have a senior Irish presence considering we can't air lift ourselves and need to hitch. I know we aren't involved in destroying nations too often but having the ability to air lift is something we should think about, even to assist other nations. I hope Coveney fills the government jet to the rafters as he leaves.

I didn't realise that Coveney was going. I knew we were sending some Army Rangers out to Kabul to help get any Irish people out. Fair play to Coveney if he went with them, it is not a trip a lot of politicians would make. I believe from the reports today that they the Rangers and diplomats are set to leave today due to the rising Terror threat

No, It's been going on 20 years or so. All FF/FG governments during that period IMO and any opposition supported it. While the idea of nation building was noble it was basically a money grab for US contractors. Now Afghans have outed themselves the Taliban will likely murder them. That's on the west IMO.
It's an obscene failure, thousands of lives, trillions of dollars to hand Afghanistan back to the Taliban and we can't wash our hands of involvement. The option was there to be properly neutral but we didn't take it, despite polls showing over 55%(I think it was) against the use of Shannon.

He's an enigma is Coveney, sounds completely competent in his Brexit brief and FA, but has been generally awful on the homefront briefs.
The ones like Coveney, Varadkar, Donahue and few others don't really care about the homefront, they are all looking at enhancing their reputations outside the country for when they finish in politics. Politics in this country has just become a stepping stone for politicians here so that they can get a plum job either in Europe or internationally.
And some like Dara Murphy will cream the taxpayer for dodgy expenses while they are at it. Many FG fans here will not know who Dara Murphy is of course 😉
They cannot hack the fact that the days of feathering your own future nest and the nests of others (Zappone) are coming to an end.
Slinking off on to the board of some entity or other is also coming under scrutiny (I.E. Enda's recent wee nesting)
Just on the Zappone appointment, the expenses side of things, would they have covered her NYC apartment rental?

Honest question btw, but if so, living rent free would have been a massive perk to the crony appointment.
