Just coming up on my news app there that the rescues are being called off? I'm abroad with limited internet. Jesus that's shocking that they're pulling out and deserting everyone.
Irish rangers leaving, short tour
Machine gun fire at aircraft and now a suicide bombing. It's getting nastier.
Awful news re the suicide bomb but it was - sadly - only a matter of time
jihadism is a scourge
They could easily get sucked back into a full war ? Biden wants out ASAP
Reports that a number of US troops have been injured. Fairly dire to get maimed or killed this close to the conclusion of the American involvement.
How much does NATO and the other nations present on the ground spend on every year? Given that the US alone spends 700 billion, it must be easily be a Trillion euro.
How has it come to pass then, militarily and politicially, that we are see a live reboot of Saigon '75, arguably worse, and no effort has been made to re-deploy air and ground forces to defend friendly forces and extend and secure the Kabul Airport perimeter.
Where are the SAS, the Seals and the US Rangers, the Foreign Legion, the armoured vehicles, the artillery and missile systems to reinforce the position and defend the aircraft movements? Where are the sophisticated combat helicopters, the engineers and logisticians to push out that perimeter and sweep away threats while letting the innocents looking to escape gain some refuge.
if they don’t bring in their guns to defend the defenseless from this vermin and continue to run with their tail between their legs, then USA image as a superpower will be totally destroyed
Sky News reporter saying they have information that some American troops MAY have been killed.
Otherwise apparently at least 13 killed including children.
Biden has a massive decision to make here.
Limited options available to biden now , either send troops back to Afghanistan or bring in enough troops to retake Kabul either way the **** is getting real
What an absolute monumental fu*k up of a situation.
NATO went into Afghanistan to defeat terrorism and then 20 years and a lot of blood and treasure later the West leaves Afghanistan under Terrorist attack.
It's a total mess and the poor people trying to flee are caught in the middle. This could well end the evacuations now if American soldiers have been killed.
Complete mess started by Trump and Biden decided to go through with it.
It’s worse than Saigon now
I feel like Trump, rightly or wrongly, was feared/respected in the Middle East. He reduced ISIS to rubble, and represented a credible threat due to his craziness/strength (delete as appropriate). I honestly think Trump would have handled this situation much better than oul' Joey.
I've probably been watching too much homeland and the likes, but does this seem like perfect timing to anybody else?
Just enough time to build peak outrage and justify bombing the unholy **** out of Afghanistan on the 20th anniversary of 9-11
Yes you have been watching too much Homeland. There will be no bombing, no anger, just lots of flowers, tears and political correctness for the anniversary. The terrorists are going to love it.
How is it worse than Saigon?
One of the features of the fall of Saigon was that the US evacuation wasn't interfered with or attacked to a significant extent by the NVA. Hence Kabul could be labelled as worse.
I hope there is a better pronunciation of Qatar. It’s alway been Catarrh to me with its bronchial associations😁
Agree. We now have casualties as the US scrambles to GTFO
toff imperialist
I think the images of bodies crushed in the planes wheels, or the bodies falling off planes, make this worse than Saigon. People crushed at the airport, now a suicide bomb. I can't imagine it getting any messier.
With regard to refugees from Afghanistan and whatever number the govt decide to accept, do we have to take the first who apply or can we choose who to accept?
This is basically the "madman" theory of history, as popularised by nixon and kissinger in Vietnam. Didn't work one iota then and no reason to think it would be faring better now. Trumps bluff gets called straight off the bat, and what then?
Anyone trying to claim that this would have been handled better under Trump is talking through their arse.
Hold tight. We ain't done yet.
Reports saying ISIS-K are responsible
Do we have any numbers for how many US, allied, European, Afghan evacuees etc are still waiting to get out? These terrorist attacks are a nightmare scenario and might prevent huge numbers of them getting out at all.
I agree. I don't think anyone should be talking about Trump. Biden's failure should be the only thing discussed when it comes to America and this withdrawal from Afghanistan
