Something I thought of during the week, why are the UK still allowed to win and enter the Euromilions lottery ?
Because they are in Europe...
Its just a name. It is in no way associated with the legalities of the European Union.
It's a disgrace alright. They should be allowed to enter but be barred from winning the thing under any circumstances.
Why wouldn't they?
Euromillions has nothing to do with the EU. Lots of EU countries don't play, while Switzerland are also involved.
well Yes, but they left. !
I understand the concept, but I always think things like this are a bit pick and chose!
Correct, I'm assuming OP is referring to Brexit 🤔
As an example, Switzerland isn't in EU either and yet lots of winners in recent history (hate them 😂😂)
Left what? They left the EU, they did not leave Europe!
What you should really be asking is, how do Israel and Australia get into the EUROvision song contest, thats the real tragedy here!
I am.
Like I know really the use of Brexit is to be out of the trade Zone, but still, I don't like it when Non EU countries have loads of Euromillions winners :)
I also get that if larger countries like the UK are not in it, the prizes would be smaller.
Kind like the Hideous Euro vision, last time I checked Israel not only on a different continent, but was never in EU.
COMPETITION like Eurovision has nothing to do with EU
If the UK left Europe, which continent do you think they joined? Or maybe they established a new one?
I get your point generally and yes I agree with the premise of your question but unfortunately it's really not an EU issue it's more a continental, geographical thing if I'm making sense.
I don't like it when Non EU countries have loads of Euromillions winners :)
Lotto is just a tax on the stupid anyway so if they have lot of winners just means lots of stupid people
If you think that the UK is no longer located in the continent of EUROpe (hence the term EUROmillions), please tell me what continent they relocated to? If it's anything but Europe, it's going to look really weird from a geographic point of view.
Why can they enter the Eurovision? Because its not the European Union vision. Why is the train still called the Eurostar? Because it isn't the European Union Star.
They've left the European Union. They are still geographically in Europe.
Cannot believe you used "thought" to describe what you've done there.
A little Harsh perhaps, there is some good comes out of it albeit I do have concerns about general transparency re where lottery charitable funding goes. I admit to having a small weekly flutter, I wouldn't consider myself stupid, perhaps a Dreamer 😁 but of course there is the gambling aspect too and that's for a different discussion I guess.
There are only 9 countries in the Euromillions. UK, France, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal and Switzerland. It was launched as a joint venture between the UK, French and Spanish national lotteries. It's a private entity, that has nothing to do with the EU, of which the UK is a founding member. So why would they be kicked out?
I'm counting 10 🤔
Sorry correction, I am stupid after all its 9 😁
I assume you are trolling, as nobody body would have this bad a grasp of geography
Joe Duffy on line 3 caller 🙄
Euromillions wouldn't throw the United Kingdom out as too much loss of money.
Correct.
The Eurovision organisation that runs the song contest, is not political and is not strictly confined to European geography either. It is a technical alliance called the European Broadcasting Union that operates the Eurovision satellite network to distribute TV content around and outside of Europe. The song contest originally evolved out of an idea to promote the technology by organising an event for the associated member broadcasting companies - some of which are not located in geographic Europe, but use the satellite network facilities to distribute content. Eurovision was using the 'Euro' tag, before it became political.
From the EBU website:
'The Eurovision Song Contest is organized by the European Broadcasting Union, the world's foremost alliance of public service media, representing 116 member organizations in 56 countries and an additional 34 Associates in Asia, Africa, Australasia and the Americas.'
Unfortunately, politics has caught up with the event and the voting process now seems to be very political .... always a problem when you hand over potential influence to the mass public.
optedincountriesthatareonthecontinentofeuropemillions doesn't quite roll off the tounge like euromillions.
Well tbf to the OP. There's an element of how are they negotiating the new trade and or services barriers . Was there a large financial impact to still including them with these new external customs union barriers
Do you think the UK is in North America now or what?
Why would they kick them out? There's no need.
Euromillions is nothing to with the entity that is the European Union. The Euro part relates to continent of Europe.
That's why Britain is still in it, and also enters the Eurovision. Has national teams in European Football Championships. Their football clubs still take part in tournaments such as European Champions' League,Europe League & Conference. Also all other European sports events British teams can participate in too.
There is free trade of goods and services between the UK and the EU.
Euromillions is owned by a UK company and a French company. So post Brexit the free trade deal kicked in and nothing changed.
It's a myth that the voting in Eurovision is political. Yes Greece and Cyprus will always vote for each other and there's a few more neighbourly votes but idea that the competition is now run by Eastern block countries voting for each other is not true as evidenced by last 10 year's winners being Italy, Netherlands, Israel, Portugal,Ukraine, Sweden twice , Austria Denmark,& Azerbaijan. So only 2 eastern block countries there out of 10 and also one country with practically zero allies.
This thread reminds me of a few conversations I had after brexit. The amount of people saying to me that England won't be allowed into the euros soccer was astounding. When you try to explain the euros existed long before the EU was even formed and its not limited to EU countries.
