finally got a reasonable quote for 4.7kw system - at €1k/1kW mark (if I had a grant, which I don't):
14 x Qcells 335w split-cell all black mono PERC
Solis Dual MPPT String Inverter
All those panels will take 24 sqm - that is twice over allowed exemption. Has any of you dealt with local council in regard of this ?
-Solis Hybrid inverter 5kw to future proof extra panels later date and wifi dongle for inverter app
-4.8KW battery
-14 panels JA solar 310W on a west facing roof
-Eddi water heater for immersion
-Zappi 2 car charger untethered and myenergie hub
7000e after grant net cost to me- Nearest quote was 3-4K ontop of this quote.

I just got my first quote from one of the crowds that are heavily advertising down here in Cork and it was a little steeper than I expected! He said I needed:
8 panels
1 small battery
1 diverter
1 BER cert
And after the the grant was taken off it would be €8,400...is that a reasonable cost?
You need more detail than that, what size panels/battery, no mention of inverter.
In any case about €2k too much
8 panels? Even if they are 400W panels this is way too expensive.

He didn't mention the size of the panels, I presume he'll give more details in the email quote. I think he said 2.75 battery if that makes sense? He may have mentioned an inverter. I only have a small house of about 1200 square feet so I doubt the panels are very large but I don't know for sure.

What happens when the inverter is underspeced for the amount of panels? 5kw but potential (if unlikely) 6.kw count from the panels?

right size inverter question:
if I understand it correctly,
the power rates of the panels are DC rates (peak rates actually), the inverter rates are for output AC (or are they?).
What size of the inverter should be installed for 4kW solar array ?
Should "Recommended max. PV power" exceed theoretical 4kW of solar ?
I understand here in Ireland we don't get the full sun, but when we do (once in decade) would it not be dangerous to have undersized inverter ?
ps: i am maxing out the roof space (S-SE), so there will be no extra panel added in the future.
So, in fact, the inverter is oversized it has a Max 7,500 Wp DC input and a 5kw AC output, reading many forums on this solar journey is seem the industry is preferring to oversize the PV array to the inverter due to the fact the inverters are way more efficient when running close to the max before any inverter clipping starts
All very new to me so forgive the stupid questions. Everyday is a school day!
It's a balancing game. If the inverter is undersized relative to the array - and I am talking max theo DC output vs AC output only - then you get higher efficiency in the operating curve but suffer from clipping. Most inverters these days have an almost flat efficiency curve after 15-20% so this is only applicable below 20% rated max. So if you have a 5kW inverter you are inefficient below 1000W and if you have a 6kW inverter you are inefficient below 1200W. The increased efficiency helps in the winter when you wouldn't be producing much.
