He is making great points.
Joe taking no responsibility blaming his allies. Reminded me of a quote from the last South Vietnamese president who said it was harder to be an ally of the US then to be their enemy.
He’s throwing the former government under the bus and they deserve it for **** off over the weekend.
I hope you are correct in using the past tense...
A lot of it is disingenuous. Afghan forces have suffered massive casualties in recent years. US forces haven't had a casualty since February 2020. To make it out as if Afghan forces never lifted a weapon to defend their country is just a blatant lie. The Afghan Government was abandoned by the US administration, barred from the negotations and left in the dark over the US withdrawal. It's no wonder its forces left the pitch to spare any further bloodshed.
The chinese are already having those discussions. Are they in much of a position to project much force there though if the taliban pull a Castro on Mr Burns on them though? I could see that being a shít-show that would make the last few days look like a german factory.
Both the South Vietnam government and Afghan one seemed to have vast corruption problems. South Vietnam managed to fight on alone for much longer; the Afghan government doesn't seem to have fought at all.
He is equating himself with soldiers who spilled their blood in Afghanistan
he believes what he is saying for sure. but... not good enough
Lay off whatever it is your smoking.
According to Al Jazeera the Uzbeks shot down an Afghan jet in their air space, they also reported them forcing helicopters and other Military aircraft to land with some 550+ soldiers onboard.
Well he did say "the buck stops with me at least"
This is a soberly honest speech. He's outdoing the Republicans at their own game.
The only thing a more bolstered withdrawal would have done would be to delay the events of this week, never to avoid them.
"The buck stops with me", have we ever heard any such words from a previous President?
I actually think he is doing really well and being brutally honest.
It started off quite sensible but then took an odd turn towards the end. It might have been one of those posts that you start and forget about, only to come back and finish it after a session.
but not addressing really the withdrawal plans
how so? I'm 20 minutes behind, just started watching.
Why doesn't he take questions?
An exceptionally defeatist speech. No questions entertained. Weak.
Not taking questions
Lads, Obama didn't take questions either when he killed Bin Laden. Reading too much into that.

Some presidents didn't take questions for 2 years or so...

I don't think they do ,but there is a few large empty NATO bases that could house hundreds of thousands of Chinese ,
But can China fight wars ,the last real Chinese military action was Tiananmen Square , before that the end of the Korean war when they stepped in to maintain the north,
How would they fare against people who have been at war 4 decades
Not literally 2 years, but yes, were happy to have their press secretaries answer with alternative facts etc. and had the fewest press conferences since Reagan. Just 9 of his conferences were solo events, not including the pandemic. Most of them were joint conferences with other world leaders etc.
Excuse me if this is an ignorant question, but why would any young girl (or man) choose to live in Afghanistan (if you are not from there) , of all the places on this earth?
I imagine any withdrawal plan factored in the presence and active engagement of the 300,000 Afghan national armed forces, trained and equipped to the hilt by NATO and others, including Ireland, for 15 years.
The moment they went Missing In Action, is the moment all plans went out the window.
The question is what happened those Afghan forces.
Obama used to subject himself to fairly frequent press conferences with questions and answers in fairness, you wouldn't expect him to field questions immediately after a major speech such as this but he would at some stage. Biden is shy when it comes to dealing with the media, I think even his most ardent supporters would admit this. Trump set the bar low when it comes to press conferences considering he essentially did none.
so perhaps civilians werent even factored into the plan then. they were on their own. gosh its so cruel.
