Will this be seen as one of the defining moments of America's decline in global affairs? Could it be that historic? A hinge moment in history even?
Seemingly only four countries recognised the previous Taliban government. Imagine it will be a greater number this time around.
Maybe not, they have messed up before. Maybe they have realised that there are bigger threats out there and Afghanistan is no more than a sideshow.
Hopefully the government organises forces to get our lot out
Biden speech is 10 min overdue, for those who care to listen.
Can't see anyone queueing up to recognise them ,id imagine Syria and Belarus , Armenia and parts of Ukraine
Sure, but I didn't mean from America's perspective. Who cares? I meant from a possible historical viewpoint.
It's all well and good making those commitments, but there is evidently a disconnect between the Taliban leadership sitting around the negotiation table in Doha and some of the actual commanders on the ground. We've already seen some of those commitments broken on the ground in recent weeks. It's to be expected given the nature of the Taliban, it's a diverse collection of warlords each with their little fiefdoms. I think internal conflict is inevitable in time, leadership will either try and enforce their control and dictates’ or the extremist elements will lash out. One or the other is likely, or both.
Best to open the nightclubs, we may not have long left......
I'm a big fan of Peter Zeihan, I know he's not everyone's cup of tea but this is one of his fundamental positions that America no longer needs the world and they are happily retreating since the Obama days through Trump and now Biden.
Seems true to me.
Some of the nearby countries might. Also anyone who wishes to embarrass the West with little effort.
Good job I held onto that packet of iodine tablets.
Biden giving his remarks now on Afghanistan shortly
Sleepy Joe takes the stage
You're right on there my friend. But many countries (ourselves included) are allowing China to buy access to all our resources both inteluctual and physical.China is the biggest danger to our planet at this time. And countries are welcoming them in.This will not end well.
Biden saying that the only reason for their war in Afghanistan was to prevent an attack on US soil.
Really??
I had to Google Peter Zeihan. Thank you for that.
"American disinterest in the world means that American security guarantees are unlikely to be honored. Competitions held in check for the better part of a century will return. Wars of opportunism will come back into fashion. History will restart. Areas that we have come to think of as calm will seethe as countries struggle for resources, capital, and markets. For countries unable to secure supplies (regardless of means), there is a more than minor possibility that they will simply fall out of the modern world altogether."
Seems very plausible, especially in the world destabilised by climate collapse.
It's likely but it won't be many ,they will never be considered any kind of legimate rulers ,
The Chinese approach will be interesting ,they will get the mines ,and build various infrastructure to benefit them under loan agreements and when the Taliban stop paying China will sieze the mines and infrastructure using military force which will not end well for anyone ,
Biden: "This did unfold more quickly than we expected"
"We" is a weaselly word. He should have said "I".
Indeed, the world is definitely in major flux in all sorts of areas, who knows how it'll turn out.
I'm listening to Biden now blaming everyone else, he's so uninspiring.
Joe is kinda throwing the Afghans under the bus here...
Biden is pointing the blame squarely at the Afghan forces and political leadership.
An incredibly defensive speech, Biden throwing his allies to the wolves. You'd wonder what other US allies in conflict zones are thinking right now.
Trump seems to be getting as many mentions as the Taliban.
he is throwing every Afghan who helped them over there under the bus
And rightly so.
We is correct I would think, many individuals and agencies would be involved in predicting the outcome of withdrawal.
Oh dear, The Taliban might be worried that they could get banned from Twitter.
He has a point though. Some of the blame does lay with the Afghan military.
Hard to known which was the bigger threat to the US!
