I had to Google Peter Zeihan. Thank you for that.
"American disinterest in the world means that American security guarantees are unlikely to be honored. Competitions held in check for the better part of a century will return. Wars of opportunism will come back into fashion. History will restart. Areas that we have come to think of as calm will seethe as countries struggle for resources, capital, and markets. For countries unable to secure supplies (regardless of means), there is a more than minor possibility that they will simply fall out of the modern world altogether."
Seems very plausible, especially in the world destabilised by climate collapse.
Biden saying that the only reason for their war in Afghanistan was to prevent an attack on US soil.
Really??
You're right on there my friend. But many countries (ourselves included) are allowing China to buy access to all our resources both inteluctual and physical.China is the biggest danger to our planet at this time. And countries are welcoming them in.This will not end well.
Sleepy Joe takes the stage
Biden giving his remarks now on Afghanistan shortly
Good job I held onto that packet of iodine tablets.
Some of the nearby countries might. Also anyone who wishes to embarrass the West with little effort.
I'm a big fan of Peter Zeihan, I know he's not everyone's cup of tea but this is one of his fundamental positions that America no longer needs the world and they are happily retreating since the Obama days through Trump and now Biden.
Seems true to me.
Best to open the nightclubs, we may not have long left......
It's all well and good making those commitments, but there is evidently a disconnect between the Taliban leadership sitting around the negotiation table in Doha and some of the actual commanders on the ground. We've already seen some of those commitments broken on the ground in recent weeks. It's to be expected given the nature of the Taliban, it's a diverse collection of warlords each with their little fiefdoms. I think internal conflict is inevitable in time, leadership will either try and enforce their control and dictates’ or the extremist elements will lash out. One or the other is likely, or both.
Sure, but I didn't mean from America's perspective. Who cares? I meant from a possible historical viewpoint.
Can't see anyone queueing up to recognise them ,id imagine Syria and Belarus , Armenia and parts of Ukraine
Biden speech is 10 min overdue, for those who care to listen.
Hopefully the government organises forces to get our lot out
Maybe not, they have messed up before. Maybe they have realised that there are bigger threats out there and Afghanistan is no more than a sideshow.
Seemingly only four countries recognised the previous Taliban government. Imagine it will be a greater number this time around.
Will this be seen as one of the defining moments of America's decline in global affairs? Could it be that historic? A hinge moment in history even?
This is very much true
You think the US/UK/the west has been doing anything other than thinking of their own interests for the past 20 years?
The Chinese government don't give a crap about what anyone thinks. They'll do what benefits them most.
China and Russia getting ready to recoginise the Taliban government.China wants access to the rare earth elements that Afhghanistan seems to have in abundance.Russia just wants to screw the US.Our planet is in danger with the effects of global warming but all Russia and China can think of is their own interests.People we are close to a war(possible Nuclear) and the finish of our civilisation.
that funding already has been allocated - its not finding money - it comes from existing programs. but dont let that stop you from your rant on not helping anyone outside of ireland.
Trump made a deal where he told the Talaban the US would be withdrawing...there endeth the deal.
Likely, the Afghan army knew they were goosed, it was only a mater of time and figured best not to risk dying for a lost cause.
I feel sorry for all the servicemen and civilians who put their lives on the line for absolutely nothing. Anyone still there is fucked.
Anyone see Rambo 3? Very interesting. Rambo hooks up with the Taliban to take on the Russians. The Taliban are noble freedom fighters in that narrative.
Its just a political gesture, no more... we can say we ‘did’..
we should be taking 0... I’m sure everyone on fûcking hospital waiting lists here and denied fûnding for rehabilitative inpatient treatments following assaults, car accidents, stokes and brain injuries and the likes will be overjoyed that the government can find a few million to help the health and wellbeing of people from a land 8000 kilometers away as their priority.
We have other schemes that bring in thousands via the UN. We also have an asylum system that attracts thousands every year who fly in here, the majority of who fail and we spend hundreds of millions of Euros on every single year. There is only so much we can do.
If they want to bring in more genuine people then they could shut down the system where people can fly into this country and claim asylum from EU accession countries, India, African economic migrants etc etc.
Do what the Danes and the Australians are implementing. This will never happen though because the current system lines the pockets of the NGO's and the legal industry etc.
I'm not sure what winning means in Afghanistan.
150 is pure mindless and meaningless tokenism.
And as a foretaste of things to come, they are already collecting weapons from the Citizens...as according to the Taliban, they wont need them any more as they ( Taliban) will protect them, so no need for weapons. Following a pattern, same as before.
I have no idea what the US Mission was. I'm not sure they did either.
No its not.look at it from their viewpoint. Fight for a corrupt government against a foe that you cannot beat without the help of the US, who have pulled out of the fight? And not only will you be killed,,,but your Family too ( and anyone associated with you) So, no. You lose your weapons and uniform, and survive ( maybe to fight another day?? ) And cheer the victors... all to survive.
