Of course, longer term, this takeover by the Taliban will trigger an enormous number of refugees to flee the country.
There is already a sizeable number of Afghan migrants in Europe, I assume that, in the near future, this will become significantly larger with the coming migratory wave.
I assume they are all out at this stage or at least out of Taliban reach and close to leaving. No way could the West allow them to get caught there now. China/Russia/Iran and Pakistan are the major players there now, up to them to deal with the situation whatever that entails...
No word of what happening with NATO and US forces there. They hardly got them all out in one day.
Not everyone follows Sharia Law/Way the way the Taliban choose to interpret it.
So saying people desire to follow Sharia, is not really the same as they support Taliban version of it.
That Turkish figure looks very low, especially in a country with a still very conservative eastern region. There was a survey done in Ireland a few years ago and the percentage was way way higher in Ireland
99 percent of Afghanis support and desire Sharia Law, which is exactly what the Taliban are offering.
For many Afghanis, this is a very good day indeed.
87 percent of Somalians strongly support Sharia Law, a country being taken over by Al Shabaab.
Here is evidence from Pew polling:
The data indicates that Muslim support for implementation of Sharia as national law is highest in Afghanistan, at 99 percent support, in Iraq, at 91 percent, and in the Palestinian territories, at 89 percent. It's lower elsewhere, including in Egypt, where support is 74 percent. Muslims in historically secular Turkey and Azerbaijan indicated 12 and 8 percent support, respectively, for adopting Sharia.
The Taliban are on the streets of Kabul now, armed. It's over....
It's a dark day for the people of Afghanistan
Considering that the Afghanis know exactly what their future holds, I’m shocked that they allowed themselves to be walked over. It’s incredible to see the country get taken over without any reported battles.
How were the Irish defence forces involved ?
Yes it probably was inevitable at some point but I don’t think many expected it to be this swift and seemingly absolute. Even the US president and his top cabinet secretaries never said that the Taliban wouldn’t control major parts of Afghanistan, but them seemed to believe it would take some time.
The only people who can save Afghanistan is the Afghan population.
Foreign intervention and hoping to "civilize" the uncivilized almost never works. The world is crammed with awful regimes that subjugate their own populations. The Taliban is just one such example. We cannot go around every country to "free" everyone.
As awful as the Taliban are, it was clearly inevitable that this was going to happen.
We had troops in Afghanistan fwiw. So we were directly involved.
My guess is this will be over by tonight. Afghan army only have control in the city center, and that's probably only until everyone is out before they melt away or leave themselves. It's Saigon all over again, at a lightning pace.
I'd say for starters, all previous and present Govt contracts with the Chinese ( and everyone else) will be declared null and void, and new one's negotiated, but strictly on Taliban terms. And also what effect will China's treatment of the Uighurs' have on a future relationship? Now that they are in power, the military part may well prove to be the easiest part...providing for the needs of a population of just under 40 million is not an easy task..especially under sanctions.
Wave of support or unable to defend themselves against them?
Not entirely western europe in 1940s would agree with you.
Maybe you should get the Koreans to vote which side of the border they prefer living on.
In fairness history suggests you are wrong that, indeed, repeated failures does not deter other countries from getting involved.
Seems that the Afghan president has left the country.

Looks to me like one big transfer of wealth out of state coffers on the US side.
They have not finished what they embarked on and left a **** show. Same as everywhere they go to really.
No Gary.....if the US had minded their own business, the world would be a different place today, but they could not resist poking Russia in the eye, payback time for the support the Russians gave Vietnam, which helped them to kick out the US. So they helped kick Russia out if Afghanistan,,Imagine, a Russia still bogged down in Afghanistan,,,
Just think of the free minded individuals who will be stuck in Afghanistan now to live under a brutal cult. I read an article recently, believe it said the suicide rate was 95% female in Taliban controlled areas.
Given how quickly it collapsed, lots of people won't have the chance to get out. A US reporter was tweeting earlier that lots of Afghanis who helped the US haven't had their visa requests processed yet and the state department is incredibly slow to do this. Similar with the Brits. Thank you for your help, now bye. lambs to the slaughter. Disgusting but expected.
More like a trillion overall.
They could of been in there 100 years and the Afghan's still wouldn't of got themselves together, clearly there is no appetite to sustain themselves and live in a moderate society, and it's obvious the Taliban have a lot of support, it's incredibly sad for women and young girls but at the end of the day, you can't change the nature of the world, these places are archaic at heart and you can't force civilization on savages.
Oh, but look! Does more war have to be the only option?

88 billion dollars to build Afghan army...money well spent.
The A in NATO stands for Atlantic. I don't think Afghanistan quite fits the mission statement.
Only one unsavoury aspect, for starters.
They aren't trying to stop them.
All these news reports,
3 days ago, Taliban are within 7 miles of Kabul
1 day ago, Taliban are withing miles of Kabul
WHat are they on, drunken donkeys ? WTF So comical how they can't stop some bearded nutjobs on mules. So funny it's tragic .
