I think we've established the likelihood of that being true.
Our Constitution says differently. It clearly says that the island of Ireland contains a number of identities, only one of which is Irish.
Similarly, America (North and South) contains a number of different identities, and you cannot refer to a Canadian or a Peruvian as an American.
Any thoughts on the NIP?
You can identify as Martian if you want.
Nobody is saying you can't.
Any person can identify as they wish. I could identify as being from Mars....do you know of law that can't make me identify as being from Mars? But I would just be, factually a person from Ireland (an Irish person) identifying as being from Mars.
And you can refer to a Canadian as a American in the context of the demonym of a person from the Americas of which Canada is part of. Just like you can still refer to English Brexiter as a European as they're still from the continent of Europe despite not being a European citizen.
Identity isn't factual.
You may factually be a person born on the island of Ireland, but that doesn't factually mean you are an Irish person.
The inability to distinguish the difference is the main characteristic of the ideology of exclusionary nationalism.
Identify is not factual but where you are from is factual. If you are from place X and the demonym of place X is Y. You are factually Y from place X....
National identity is a strange one my parents are both Irish I was born in Dublin but one of my parents was raised in London their Parents are Scottish and Irish so what is my ethnicity.
Excellent find lurleen. I wondered where you had disappeared to.
I accept completely how this looks although you should put it in context and it supports what I have been saying.
no way did MM become PM without it being on our tv. No doubt I saw it. I don’t know when he became PM but clearly, as supported by your link, by jan 2021 I was not aware who was PM. Activity on here made me aware. 9 months later I am not aware. I am not share what is shocking about this.
I would imagine all 6 people I surveyed today saw MM being elected, months later it’s not on there radar and they no longer remember. There wouldn’t be much point in quiz programmes if we logged everything for all time.
I couldn’t tell you now who are reigning champions league champions - does that mean I didn’t know when it was all over the press?
so I completely stand by that a few days ago I did not know who was Irish PM. You can find that unbelievable if you like, but it’s how it is.
Go read the preamble to the Constitution, it specifically refers to the unification of our country. If you choose to place yourself outside our Nation/Country, like DC does, then drive on, but don't expect a pass doing it to those living in the northeast who have as much right to claim ownership and participate in its future as anyone else.
When the time comes for a border poll you can put forward your crypto-unionist plan for permanent partition, in opposition to everything this country is about, so that it can be exposed for the bizarre false dawn it is.
..
What is a European citizen? Surely EU citizens are not suggesting the rest of us are less European than them?
blanch's a la carte constitution.
No. If you are from Europe you are European. But a European citizen or EU citizen exists for the Europeans who's countries are member state of the EU. Just because you are not a European citzen does not mean you're not European as the EU does not cover all of europe in the same way just because you are not an Irish citizen does not mean you're not Irish as the ROI does not cover all of Ireland.
Citizens of countries that are in the EU. There's not far off half-a-billion of us and the Irish government is working hard to ensure those in the northeast of our country, who have been spitefully wrenched out of the EU, get to retain as many benefits of EU citizenship as possible.
When a border poll does come full membership of the EU will be one of the main selling points to everyone in the north.
Ah, so it was a typo. So you mean EU citizenship
Was that not obvious? What else could it possibly have meant? "European" as a cultural or geographical identifier is not any kind of citizenship. The only citizenship that exists that could reasonably be described as European citizenship is citizenship of the European Union, and "European Citizen" is as commonly used to refer to citizenship of the Union as "American citizen" is to refer to citizenship of the United States.
You definitely have not conversed with many people from South America on this topic.
The United States does not hold a monopoly on the word "America".
The many people of South America are all Americans.
American and "americano" are cognate.
The earnest "EU is not Europe" stuff is quite funny. The British are somewhat less "European" in a politcial sense than the rest of us post Brexit, it is just a fact.
They didn't want any part of the political project that is the EU (and spinoffs) which much as the British may really wish it wasn't the case, involves nearly every other country in Western/Central Europe to one degree or another.
Afraid people who live in the EU referring to the EU as "Europe" as a shorthand will not stop because the British have given the 2 fingers to the rest of us and taken their football home with a sour-puss on them + decided the EU is now dead to them post 2016!
If only it was dead post-2016, but because they're such a shower they've dragged it on til 2021 and it's still as annoying as it ever was.
Ireland is Ireland in fairness.
Funny is one way of describing it.
oh I do get it! USA also refer to themselves as America, Americans and American citizens. Same arrogance, different continent!
you go further. You think nearly all of Europe is in the EU. Last time I looked there were approx 23 European countries that are not in EU.
time will tell, but I am growing to prefer being one of the 20 odd non ‘European’ countries and if I lived on the continent across the pond I would also prefer being in one of the non ‘American’ counties. Seems there may be a little more culture and diversity.
What checks are petty?
Why are they endless?
The poster said this involves nearly every other country in Western/Central Europe
involves nearly every other country in Western/Central Europe
you lie about what they said and change it to this You think nearly all of Europe is in the EU and rant against it.
You think nearly all of Europe is in the EU
Familiar misrepresentation used again.
Tis as regular as it is obvious unfortunately.
Any update on the NIP?
In a holding pattern till October I think.
Downcow: time will tell, but I am growing to prefer being one of the 20 odd non ‘European’ countries
Well, if you and the deluded NI Unionist leaders get their wish and succeed in junking the NI protocol + trigger a UK-EU trade war, may you enjoy and savour the full English Brexit experience!
What's changed for you now that you "prefer" your current status?
I'd imagine that any retaliation will be surgical in nature and will cause pain for the Tories electorally.
