The fact 3 were Irish is a reflection of the strength of Irish show jumping.
Are you looking at the quality of the jump off?
How many teams qualify for the final?
He rubbed the last fence. I think without steadying him with the extra stride he would have knocked it.
The amount of favourites with 4 faults. Such a thin line. I think if he jumped later he would have done a clear.
Explosion.. well named horse!
Just curious why you posted a pic of the mixed relay team, who did really well, 5 days later 😂
Did you just here about the mixed relay now? Or was it some sort of anti equine event post?
Top 10 of 20 teams.
I noticed in several games, mainly boxing that a woman who appeared to be a nun, who appeared to official looking was congratulating the winner. Does anyone know who that was?
Every rider goes through the same process every Olympic cycle. You have to first fight off the competition to get there and then beat over 70 odd other riders to win a medal. It is the one every rider wants to win. I don't think you can get any more elite than that tbh.
Another thing with Cian's performance, his horse, while good, hadn't the scope of 12 or so horses on view. He got most of the ability out of his horse.
If the team recover their form from yesterday, they could still be in with a shout of a team medal. The big disappointment today was not Cian, but Allen and Kenny both knocking two fences down.
Looks like O`Connor will not be taking part in the team qualifier on Friday after his horse picked up a nose injury in the competition today. If they don`t make it then reserve Shane Sweetnam and his horse will be brought into the Irish team.
Sure but spare us the self serving sanctimonious nonsense of them 'doing it for the people back home'. If you wanna win a medal - fine but be honest about your motives.
Heard an interview with O’Connor on the 1 o’clock news. There’ll be a team meeting and it’s possible the sub could come in for the qualifier. Hopefully they’ll qualify and then, depending on veterinary advice, we might see Kilkenny again. He’s had two super clears over a difficult course.
Leona Maguire (even par) and Stephanie Meadow (+1) had steady starts in the golf.
I am in awe of the skateboarding medalists. When I was 12 …
😂
Nothing to do with Irish Olympic news, ut having 12 and 13 year olds in adult Olympic competitions like that, in whatever sport, is morally just wrong.
Gymnasts not much older than that have been competing and winning medals in Olympic and other major Championship competitions for decades. I don`t recall too many complaints about them being too young.
There's been huge controversy over the age of gymnasts, and the minimum age has been raised several times over the decades. There's even a wikipedia article dedicated to it, almost uniquely among sports:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_requirements_in_gymnastics
This! It's been a controversial talking point for as long as I remember, and I really thought a minimum age had been imposed - couldn't believe when I heard of the 12 and 13 year olds in the skateboarding.
I agree with you, doesn't feel right to me. I think most sports do have age criteria, boxing is 18 for example, but some appear to have no age limit at all and there's nothing in the Olympic charter against it.
If you are good enough you are old enough, good on them, sailing and showjumping favour older rich people in my opinion so there is an argument the other way as well, a 62 year old from Australia won an eventing gold, not a word about the horse, also Bill Gates had a son in law jumping for Egypt, the 12 and 13 year old kids winning not a problem, if adults can enter and beat them, good luck. Where I would say kids competing is a joke is in motorsport, a 14 year old Spanish kid was killed recently in a crash, and I genuinely thought what the **** are they racing for at that age? Hugo Millan, was the kids name, if anyone wants to look it up, I can’t link it because I’m on a mobile
I was looking at BMX biking or skateboarding last night (not sure as I wasn't that interested in either pursuit) but they were all most definitely children. Found it very odd to say the least.
Some effort put in by the showjumpers too. Controlling a horse in a pressure environment takes some effort. They are very skilled people. Same as shooting, diving, artistic swimming and golf.
The triathletes, middle distance runners, rowers etc put in a far bigger effort than our 4 X 400 mixed relay team who spent 50sec each on the track, if you want to talk about effort.
Besides this is the Irish Olympic news thread. An event 5 days ago isn't news.
Sorry .
My apologies... Oh powerful one.
You seem to be the one with a problem with my post ?
I do yeah.
You just lobbed it in 5 days after the event, with a not so subtle dig at our showjumpers.
What's this 'oh powerful one' crap? If you're trying to make a statement at least have the cajones to explain it.
What are you on about ??? What was the dig ????
I neither know, nor care about 'showjumping' .....
You think you run this thread, and decide what people can post ? 🤔 Hmmmmm ...
think again ..
Isn't boxing aged 19 for elite level? At least it was.
“Elite”pertainstoanyBoxer19yearsofageoroldercompetingatanational,international or professional level."
It used to be 17.
Open to correction but i think as long as you turned 18 the year prior to an Olympics, you are eligible to compete. So those turning 18 last December 31, for example, would be ok while those with birthdays on January 1 are out. Could be wrong but that's what I think anyway.
Yes, I recall seeing what you say here......if in your '19th year' you could compete.....although the AIBA technical rulebook seems to be clear on what actual age you must be.
Yeah you could be right. I may well be a year out there, rings a bell they did put it up a year alright so turned 19 by the end of the year prior to Games is what i should have stated!
Ok. Why did you post a pic of the mixed relay team, saying they did well, 5 days after the event? Why the timing? Just heard this morning or getting around to it now? Surely you can be asked.
I never said I decided who posts what, your deflecting. The timing is curious.
Can you answer a straight question?
You haven't?? Then you must have been under a rock for the last 20 years at least.
It's more then odd IMHO, I wouldn't quite call it child abuse, but it's not too far off. The argument about older people (in their 60s) is bogus, so feine in their 60s can make their own decisions, a 12 year old generally not, and are hugely open to exploitation.
There was a woman from British skateboarding on BBC news earlier, the issue around the kids ages was never even mentioned, apart from how great the girls were themselves. They are of course, but there have to be be welfare questions around the whole thing, and for a journalist to not even raise it.... says a lot about the journalistic standards in the BBC really.
Just seems off to me.... A 12 Yr old girl generally can't play U16 gealic in this country, and rightly so IMHO.
Tanya Watson, our first ever female diver to qualify for an Olympics made tomorrow’s 10 metre platform semi. She had some nice moves today. 02:00 Irish time. Final at 07:00
One my favorite events in the games is the platform diving
