Round 11 of the championship takes place at the 4.3 km Hungaroring.
The forecast is for rain Saturday and thunderstorms Sunday.
Live on Sky and highlights on C4
Tsunoda loses it in turn four and red flags the session momentarily. Hits the barrier with the rear, not a massive impact but might be some gear box damage.
Bottas tops the times with 10 minutes to go on the softs 1:17:616
Vertsappen doing some runs on the hard tires was a second off him. Comes out on softs, down in sector 1, purple sector 2, sets a 1:17:555 to top the times.
....so far...
Tsunoda on the back foot for another weekend with a solitary lap in FP2.
It doesn't look like running the engine from Silverstone has slowed Max down too much in FP1, if that was the case. It looks like its going to be very tight between him and the two Mercedes this weekend.
Missed FP2.
Only caught a glimpse of the time sheet, Ham, Bott then Ver was 0.200 down.
Some big gaps between teammates in FP2.
Hamilton and bottas on the same pace
Max half a second ahead of Perez
Ocon 4 tenths ahead of Alonso
Norris 4 tenths ahead of Ric
Kimi 9 tenths ahead of Gio
Ferraris within a tenth
Vettel a tenth ahead of Stroll,
Russell 2 tenths ahead of Latifi and
Schumacher the bare 2 seconds ahead of Mazepin!
Gasley in 6th but Tsunoda only did one flying lap due to a crash
Interesting to note but, it's only free practice
Track temp got up to 68 today, that is insane heat.
Looks like it will cool off for the rest of the weekend a bit.
Noticed Merc having trouble getting the left rear off at the end of FP1. Had three or four goes at the wheel nut.
Wonder will there be much of that if the temps stay up.
Alpines looking quick in FP2. Vettel and Stroll looking good too.
McLaren might be in for a tough weekend!
In a nutshell, the rears are getting cooked as soon as they leave the pits and overheat soon after. Merc like this because they don't heat up as much, RB don't because they push more energy through the rear.
Should be a close race!
They might be close in quali pace, but those scenarios mean that RB will be hamstrung on race strategy. They will either have to pit one more time than Mercedes or tiptoe around and avoid overhearing the tyres all race. Mercedes will have much more options and will have the ability to push harder.
If the temps stay high then I'd strongly favour the mercs for a 1-3 or even a 1-2.
When's the last time Mercedes scored a 1-2? Seems like ages since they were almost guaranteed 1-2 every race.
Yup, if the temp stays up then Merc will love it. If it cools then we would get more of what we had in FP1, which looks likely with the cooler weather coming in.
I think we have only had a 1-2 race start this year...that is crazy.
I like these tech talk pieces from Sam Collins with Scarbs. Interesting what the teams have done to help cooling the cars for Hungary.
Wouldn't be shocked to see Schumacher out of qualifying, decent impact with the wall. Think he winded himself as well.
Pity, looked like he was driving pretty damn hard. Bit of a difference from Mazepin's usual. 😂
Haas didn't look in any hurry working on Schumacher's half finished car so safe to assume he's not taking part in qualy.
Elsewhere Giovinazzi avoided a penalty for blocking Gasly in FP3, a reprimand only. Alfa Romeo fined €5K for Giovinazzi unsafe release where he made contact with Stroll
Any video from the Schumacher's impact into the wall?
Was that the error of the mechanic for the unsafe release?
Schumacher's incident
Really enjoying Nico Rosbergs commentary and insights on these Q1 runs
Gasly P5 and Tsunoda P16 over a second slower. 6th time Tsunoda has been eliminated in Q1 this season. I really think he could have benefited from another year of F2
Only got the chance to tune in at 2. Did Nico mention anything about the incident with Max and Hamilton?
He's really good, can read it very well even from the external cameras
Pretty much said it was Hamiltons fault and that the stewards should have found a way to make the penalty more penalising given the severity of the out come.
But as has been said, the penalty was applied to the incident and not the outcome.
It feels like Tsunoda peaked to early. He had a great opening race and never managed to reach that again so far. It seems like that's frustrating him?
He has shown when he connects it all together that he can be very good but like you say, he’s not been able to repeat what he did early days of the season.
Big shunt for saintz. Car doesn’t seem that badly damaged bar the front wing.
I wouldn’t be attempting to drive that car with the front wing under the front wheels.
Whoa, got a fright there, session to resume at 15:41...
Yeah that frustration is evident when you hear him on team radio. I think it's partly down to inexperience and amplified because he's not getting anywhere near Gasly. Hope they can work with him and try to get him back on track and he doesn't end up on the Red Bull scrap heap
Alonso is impressing me again this weekend.
What's happens with Sainz re race start position? Does he have to start at the back of the grid or does he hold P15?
I’m open to correction but unless the team needs to change something on the car then he keeps at worst P15.
