All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship (Liam McCarthy Cup) 2021

PTH2009

There will be 11 teams in Liam Mac Carthy in 2021.
Munster – Limerick, Waterford, Tipperary, Clare, Cork.
Leinster – Kilkenny, Galway, Wexford, Dublin, Laois, Antrim

Provincial knock-out Championships with back-door qualifier system (as in 2020) but with
introduction of relegation (to McDonagh Cup).
Munster and Leinster Finalists (4 teams) guaranteed an All Ireland QF place

There will be a preliminary round in the qualifiers between the two defeated Quarter-final
teams in Leinster.
Winners progress to Qualifiers Rd 1 – Losers to Mc Donagh Cup 2022.

All Ireland Qualifiers Round 1- (2x Munster Teams vs 1x Leinster/1x Preliminary Round winner). 1x Leinster and 1x Munster team will get a bye into Round 2

All Ireland Qualifiers Round 2- (2x Round 1 Winners vs 1x Leinster/1x Munster bye teams)- Winners into All Ireland Quarter Finals

All Ireland Quarter Finals-Munster/Leinster Runners up vs 2x Round 2 winners

All Ireland Semi Finals- Munster/Leinster champions vs 2x QF winners

All Ireland Final- Sunday 22nd August

Munster Championship draw

QF- Clare vs Waterford

Semi Finals
Limerick vs Cork
Tipperary vs Clare/Waterford

Leinster Championship draw

QFs
Dublin vs Antrim
Wexford vs Laois

So after a odd but high scoring league the championship is on the horizon and by god I can feel its going to be a special one (hopefully a successful one for Waterford)

Have a feeling the Leinster QFs won't go to script and Antrim will beat Dublin

I would be shocked if Antrim won that match. They've had a great league but the cat's out of the bag now, they won't be taken for granted.

Never sure what league form might mean but from what I saw galway will have a fairly pedestrian win in the leinster championship. Wexford and kk will be tasty but neither of them have shown the quality to take on galway, kk folded like a deck chair in the one match there was any intensity in the league, our backs were like deer in headlights.

Munster looks really interesting, Clare after the loss to Antrim have steadily improved and will be a tough ask for anyone, they're my dark horse team this year. Hard to know after that rough, can make a strong case for all the munster teams. Tipp might be a bit old and Waterford I'm not quite convinced, cork still leaving a bit of consistency, so you'd still have to say Lim look to be in charge but no reason any of those teams can't beat them on their day.

Lim v galway, whenever they meet, will be the game to decide the all Ireland for me. Kk to take a big scalp somewhere along the way but not going past semi finals.

Hope I'm wrong and it's Clare v kilkenny in the final but... Let's be realistic here...

Lim v galway, whenever they meet, will be the game to decide the all Ireland for me.

Galway are an older team than Tipp or at least have more players 30 and over, ita always the narative about Tipp but it doesnt hold up to scrutiny really.

It does seem that the winners of the all-ireland will come from one of Limerick, Galway or tipp.

If Galway were to win Leinster, then I'd give them a very good chance of winning Liam McCarthy. If they don't, I can't see some of their older legs holding up to the quick fire nature of three games in the space of a couple of weeks. It wouldn't be as much of an issue for Limerick imo.

Limerick still remain in the driving seat wrt the overall winners imo. If they're to get caught, I feel it could be in the semi final against (hopefully from a Galway perspective) by kilkenny. It has happened before. Possibly happen again??

As regards a "dark horse" to win it outright, kilkenny. If you could call them dark horses.

Limerick vs Galway all Ireland final with Limerick to shade it.

Not sure I'd agree on 6 or 7 possible winners. Teams like Cork, Waterford or Wexford might catch one of the 3 favourites but can't see them putting a run together to beat 3 or 4 teams ranked above them

Any of those three winning would be a surprise but its not beyond a possibility - Cork probably have the best record against Limerick and Limerick are most peoples favourites, Waterford were runners up last year and look to me to have improved. I wasnt including Wexford but even at that, two years ago they ran the eventual AI winners ragged for the majority of the AI semi.

I don't think hurling has ever been as competitive to be honest.

I think given how quick and fast the games come this summer that the provincial winners will have a nice little break before their semis, whereas the provincial losers will only have one free weekend before their quarters and IF they win that the semi finals are the following weekend.

So it's one thing to talk about teams skills, age, physicality, fitness etc, but depth of panel must not be overlooked. I think Limerick are stronger than most here too.

I'd favour Limerick to do it and Galway in a close second place.

That was possibly the strangest and most inappropriate piece of sporting commentary I have ever heard. I am presuming he thought it poignant but it was just bizarre.

Limerick will win it again this year, complacency is probably the biggest danger to them. Galway will flatter to deceive again, they might at a push win Leinster, but, wouldn't bet on it.

Shane O'Donnell has been officially ruled out for the Clare Waterford match on Sunday.

Seems like both teams are going to be down a couple of key players this weekend, which is a pity. I suppose this was always on the cards with the short league/c'ship turnaround.

Should still be a good game though this weekend.
