Seems about 4ish years although the latest upgrade was the whole PC not just the GPU. I probably would've used the first GPUs about another year if it didn't die as well as the 2nd one if the computer didn't start crashing from lack of RAM (I don't use SWAP) so I'd probably be leaning on 5 years of use if the GPU was the only consideration.

Feb 2013 - GTX680

Every three or four years seems to be the sweet spot. You also have to factor in the fact that most developers won't have the resources to optimize for every GPU. So while on paper the 680 should have been able to handle newer games for a little while longer, developers just stopped looking at it at a certain point.
Steam surveys are a good measure of how likely your existing card is going to hold up with new games. The 1060 is still in too many machines to be ignored.

I was waiting for the 3000 series as it was also a generational turnover with the consoles as well but I'll probably be skipping this year and try again next year with the inevitable 4000 series.
If my 1070 actually died before things stabilize then I'd probably overpay for a 2060.

I don't think the new LHR variants are going to bring prices down nor do I believe that a price crash is coming before Etherium switches to Proof of Stake. In theory once that happens and takes hold, there should be a flood of used GPU's on the market which would take out the scalpers.

But who knows, the whole point of price speculation is its all powered on hope. Maybe all miners will just start believing that some other random invented coin is the next big thing.

I built my first PC in October 2018. And had a 6GB 1060.

I upgraded that in February 2019 to a 2060.

I sold my whole PC then in October 2020.

I built a new PC in September 2020 with the aim of getting a 3070/3080 at launch so had a RX580 as a temporary GPU.

Got a FE 3070 then 30th October 2020 and still using that at the moment.

If I can grab a 3080 for MSRP I'll get it as soon as possible.

Because you have a 3070. Do you also do the same with phones etc. or is the 3070 too slow for you?

Yes I have a 3070 but a 3080 is better

I've barely played a game on my PC for the last 6 months because I'm working from home and sitting here all day and rather spend the evenings in the gym, walking the dogs or playing golf. When I'm back in the office I'll be spending an a few hours a week gaming because I can enjoy it again.

I used to change phones every 6-9 months but I've had the current one for 12 months now.

Yeah all that is fantastic, so why wait for MSRP? Why not just pay more for one now. Why not just get a 3090 now?

Because I don't need a 3080 and I won't help a scalper profit. I wouldn't spend €1000+ on a GPU, that sort of money is reserved for irons for golf or a new woods :P

My 3070 will be going to a friend who's upgrading his PC from a 2070 but neither of us are in a rush so there's no hurry.

To be fair I do get it. In the last year I've bought a fancy LG CX OLED and built a new small form factor(ish) PC. Over-payed on a few components but I wasn't spending the money on anything else. It was mostly for something to do and I've been tweaking with it ever since.

Also completely fine. I don't know anything about your particular setup but you can get a lot of games up and running on that card targeting 1080p and 30fps. They would probably still look better then their console versions as well

First GPU was a 280x back in 2015, picked that up cheap off a mate, then got a 480 in 2017, that died so grabbed a 1650 super last summer a couple months before the 3000 series was set to be released, quickly realised I wasn't going to get one so got a 1080 off eBay for 200 quid before they ballooned in price, and then managed to get a 3080 FE back in October.

Unless there's some astronomical advance in technology in the next couple years that makes it almost necessary to upgrade I'd say it'll be another 2 GPU cycles before I look at upgrading again.

Lately, I've kinda kept up with the "updates" with upgrade cycles of 1.5-2 years (1070->2070 Super and then I'm hoping to get my hands on a 3090 asap). But at some point before, I've even been going 6/7 years with just a laptop that had a GT9600M on board.

I would say it depends on two factors - innovation (as in, how much are new GPUs improving on the old ones and how much is software making of these improvements) and the balance between PC and console gaming. Back when I only ran a laptop, for example, there were plenty of console exclusives worth playing and, on top of that, most PC games I like/liked didn't require a particularly beefy GPU.

Today in my view the balance has once again shifted back - console exclusives aren't really that many AND diminishing fast (Sony is porting many PS titles to Windows) so unless you are 100% sure not to do anything other than gaming with your platform, PC would be the way to go. I'm sure it'll switch back again at some point, seems to go in waves.

For example, the 2000-2004 period was INSANE. You'd literally buy a brand new graphics card or a CPU, and they'd be pretty much obsolete 3 months later, thanks to ATI/AMD/Intel/nVidia putting out fairly heavy "revisions" of their products at a breakneck pace. Coupled with the fact I was a 20-something lad in his first decent job and living at home, I don't think I could even remember all the hardware I went through.

I used to upgrade a lot more than I do now.

Back in the day it was 280 > 480 > 580 > 580 SLI > 670 > 780 > 780 SLI > 1070

After the 10 series things slowed. Mainly because I got into servers and started building secondary rigs, and because the 20 series was just such horrible value. We things more normal, I'd be on a 3070/80 by now.

On my current PC, I've gone from 660 > 960 > 1060 3GB. I can't remember the years. Before that I was on a laptop for a while.

I would say if you're serious about 4k gaming in any way a 3080 at least is a must. I have a 3070 and primarily stick to 1440 cause the things you have to cut back on to get acceptable perf on 4k is a bit too much.

That's a pretty standard price for a 3090 as far as I can tell. I'm more surprised someone accepted €1860 for it but I suppose that's still more than what they probably paid for it at launch

Scan are the distributor for the UK and Ireland... but don't ship to Ireland post brexit and Nvidia haven't bothered finding a new partner so we're just ****ed.

More power to you, why not spend money on hobbies/interests that keep you going if everything else is covered.

I like to nearly double the performance on cpu and gpu upgrades.

Last 4 gpus were 4870x2, 7970, gtx 970 and currently rx 5700. All pretty much doubled performance over the previous with the exception of the 970 which was only about 60% faster than the 7970 with only .5gb more memory. That was a reluctant upgrade.

Looking to get a 6800 to again double the 5700 and get my first high end card since the 7970.

Thanks to everyone who posted their GPU upgrade paths. Looks like I will be sticking to my 2070 for a very long time.

I think I just come to the point where I am longer arsed going out my way to get a new GPU unless I can simply add to basket and checkout easily.
