Planning a trip with my friends and their wives. 7 people total including me. We’re getting 4 bedrooms (3 couples have their own rooms, I have my own room) Just as we were about to book 2 people brought up how it would be unfair if we split up the total cost of the Airbnb evenly 7 ways because couples act as a unified body. They want to split the cost 4 ways and make me pay for 2 people ($600 vs 300) while the couples pay $300 total for their rooms. If the couples just split it 7 ways they’d have to pay $77 more per couple. Why should I have to pay more just because I am single? The couples will be taking up more room in the house, more of their food will be in the fridge, they’ll have more stuff in the bathroom. And if the shoe was on the other foot I’d 100% split by person. Or am I crazy?

Personally I wouldn't go on holidays with people like that.

Payment should be per room, assuming the 4 rooms are comparable, so split 4 ways. The single person could bring someone with them to share their room if they want to reduce their cost.

If it's an Air B&B that has four rooms and is rented out as a whole (same price whether two, three or four of the rooms are occupied), then it would be a 7 way split.

If it was rented out on a charge per room basis like a hotel, then it's a 4 way split.

Is anyone else finding the math in the OP impossible to work out? Why would the single person have to pay 600 for their room if the couples are paying "300 total" for theirs? Or is my math below totally off given I suck at math?

If we work it out from the "77" am I right in thinking the total cost of the room is therefore 2156?

Which means in a 7 way split the single would pay 308 euro and a couple 616? But in a 4 way split the single and the couples would each pay 539. (Hence the claim 616 is 77 bigger than 539).

So who is being asked to pay "600 vs 300" here? And how exactly are the couples in either scenario paying "$300 total for their rooms"? What am I missing?

i think its 2400 total, so paying by room its 300 per person in a couple but 600 for the single.

split per person its 343 per person. so 86 euro extra for a couple. 686 vs 600.

if everyone was good friends then id split per person. if it was acquaintances then a split per room.

They very specifically said "77" though not "86". It seems a very specific number. Either way something in the figures in the OP is not right. Not all the numbers given can be right at the same time.

EDIT: Of course I am only pointing this out to mimic (and mock) the sheer pedantry of the people described in the OP

IMO you split it 7 ways. All seven are using the kitchen, bathroom, living room etc equally. Paying per bedroom is a weird way when you're renting an entire house.

If its a house on Air BnB its pay for the house not the rooms so split 7 ways.

If it was a hotel where you pay per room then split 4 ways.

We've done this a few times with Air BnB, 3 couples and 2 single people in 5 separate rooms. We've always split the cost 8 ways.

Yup seems right to me. If you are renting individual rooms you pay by the room - if you are renting a shared entire space like a house you pay by the head. I think I am with the two users on the first page who said they would bail and would not be going on holidays with people like that in the first place

And I say that as someone in a truple rather than a couple. So unlike the person in the OP the per-head calculation goes against me rather than for me as we end up paying more for our room in such a house than the couples / singles do.

Split it per person, if the single person has a boxroom then they pay less. If one of the couples has en-suite they pay more.
If it looks like it's any form of hassle bail out now.

It's a while since I studied this, and am not particularly inclined to do so at the moment, but the OP et al clearly have time for quibbling on their hands... There's a mathematical method of doing this - using Sperner's Lemma.

Previous poster is spot on.....if it's a hotel, then you pay for your room. If it's a house, then split it per person. That's the only way for it to happen. OP mentions the house, so we're obviously looking at the latter of these two options.

It's obviously 2400 for the house, and the couples want to split it 4 ways, with each couple splitting their 600 between them and the singleton covering for 2 people.

If someone called me up and said they noticed I'd be paying less than the couples and in order to counteract them paying an 'extra' 84 quid I had to fork out 300 of my own money, I'd 100% be pulling out of the holiday immediately. Then they'd have to pay €400 each and they can go and sh1te if they think I'd be paying for any of it.

Imagine having the gall to charge someone for the girlfriend they DON'T have.

Total / number of people = cost per person. And thats how much each person pays.

But there may have to be an adjustment made if there are complicating factors based on what type of room youre getting. Single or double

It can go from very straightforward to complicated depending on the details of the deal.

You could pay the full price and just demand double everything.
Double couch space, double songs on the stereo, two seats at the table, double the showers and toilet time, double the toilet paper. Double the balcony space, dont stand there its occupied by my expenses ghost.

Imagine staying in and cooking a meal for them after splitting four ways. Prepare one plate of food per couple.

You can bet this is exactly the situation the Redditor often finds themselves in...

Anyway, Yea, House rental each person pays for themselves so even split per person. Hotel room pay per room. Worst case scenario in a house rental would be to just suck it up and pay for the room.

To do it where 1 couple is 1 person and the singleton is 2 people... GTFO, That makes no sense and the Redditor would be better not travelling with idiots like that.

That and splitting of bills in restaurants.

I remember a great post on here, where someone called colleagues out on having cocktails and expensive meals, then insisting on splitting the bill with junior colleagues who had opted for less expensive stuff, because that was all they could afford.
