XP is a bit of an exaggeration. I know that the CUH is running Windows 10.

If my original post my misleading I’ll clarify it now, parts of the HSE were still running those old operating systems and your only as strong as your weakest link.

Ya, more than likely older lab systems are still on XP. But, the outer protection Web facing servers (firewalled off from internal systems) would all be up to date I'm sure.
As another poster mentioned, there isn't a 100% secure IT system - everything has flaws.

Yesterday, and the day before, they were trying to control traffic into the Blackpool testing centre. I've never seen anywhere near that volume of cars before, at any stage.

There seems to be an awful lot of cases in schools in Cork in recent weeks.

A few weeks ago, it was Youghal and Midleton. Then Carrigaline and Douglas, followed by Ballincollig and Cloghroe were affected. Rathcormac and Fermoy were particularly badly hit last week but this week it seems to be schools in the north of the city.

The booking system is down owing to the cyber hack,centres operating as walk-in,this is why the South Douglas Road centre has re-opened

Not really. A lot of those 102 will have been in hospital for a few weeks. Vaccinations are still in the early stages. Hospital case numbers v recorded cases link has now been broke due to the vaccines effect starting to kick in(starting been the key here) Also consider we have a population of approx 4.9m. Of course I would love to see that figure in hospital at zero but we need to be realistic.

Exactly, current hospital figures are a residual from when the numbers were in the thousands, the big reduction in hospital numbers has in a large part been achieved due to the vaccination of hospital staff, unfortunately as much as 50% of the in hospital numbers at times were getting covid in hospital. Testing figures are approximately 3 times as high now as a year ago, the most vulnerable have been vaccinated, at a guesstimate 5000 cases a day would be the equivalent to 500 a day as this time last year in hospital admissions / mortality.

Most under 70s do not yet have immunity as it takes two weeks or so for immunity to build after the first vaccine.

Some of those in the 50-69 age cohort who contracted the virus in early May are still experiencing severe disease and being admitted to hospital. In the coming weeks, the numbers admitted should hopefully fall off significantly as the vaccines start to take effect.

So as a person with health issues under 60 who was vaccinated in early April, you're going to be waiting until June for your second jab of AZ and it could be July before you're fully inoculated.

But the under 60s with no underlying conditions are getting the one jab vaccine right now and will be immune in two weeks.

I expected utter idiocy. I never expected it would be this staggering.

The first dose of AZ offers significant levels of protection. That person you mentioned could have chosen to wait for the J&J option but they would have left themselves vulnerable for 2-3 months. In any case J&J wasn't available in Ireland in early April.

I'm sorry but your totally wrong with your assessment.

AZ was available before JJ. Best vaccine is the quickest one you can get in your arm.
AZ one shot provides very good protection and is in the same range as JJ. AZ is 76% effective after 3 weeks or so against symptomatic infection. Trials showed there was no severe cases or death after 22 days of the first jab. The second jab brings up the efficiency even more against symptomatic infection and reduced risks of transmitting it.
JJ is 67% effective against moderate to severe Covid after 2 weeks. After 4 weeks trials showed nobody even those with signs of infection got hospitalised.
Also add that vaccines appear to be more effective in real world than in the trials so expect those figures to improve.
Loads of data out there from reputable sources.

That's a misunderstanding of how these vaccines were authorised for use.

The vaccines are very close in efficacy. The fundamental difference between one jab vs two is related to how their trials were run, and how they applied for authorisation.

AZ ran trials with 2 jabs, not one, and applied for authorisation based on that.
J&J ran trials with 1 jab and applied for authorisation based on that.

Both AZ and J&J after 1 jab have very similar levels of covid protection.

Oh, I didn't realise after the first dose AZ had 76% efficacy. I take it back, in that case.

Although it may not protect against other strains, so J&J seems somewhat preferable in that respect.

I also agree that the best jab is whatever is available... Until any side effects affect you. But the changes are low enough to be irrelevant, you'd have to be very unlucky.
