Hi All,

Just checking to see how long will a Zinc Sulphate last for a i footbathed 30 ewes in it yesterday day and was wondering if i would be able use it again in a week or so.

If it’s not getting diluted with rain water I believe it can still be useful up to 5 or 6 weeks

Quick question regarding using formalin mixed with water in the plastic foot baths.....what is the mix strength of formalin to water again?

Is it around 300 parts water to 1 part formalin?.....have that in my head for some reason.

Yeah thinking about it it would be one part formalin to 30 parts water!

After footbathing, would it be bad practice to return sheep and lbs to same field or is it better to try and move on. They are only suffering from scald, not foot rot

I went for the profiled plastic ones as at least the sheep have a bit of grip when walking in through them.

Trying to get ewes and lambs through a footbath in a race is a nighmare, Ewes/ll bring the lambs into a wider bath easier. I think ours is 3ft wide and makes a huge difference

mobile race here which we use at a couple different locations and at home in the shed

we always point the race toward the exit and sometimes add some clean straw and usually after we get the first batch through they follow on

if they get a dry run through with the bath covered it helps as well.

Doesn't make any difference for scald.
Using Copper sulphate or zinc sulphate they need to be in the footbath for four or five mins and out on a clean dry yard for 30mins to dry. I think formalin you can run them through and it's not as important to dry them sfter. I've never used formalin myself so wouldn't be sure of that

I know what you mean we've just done our sheep now and waiting for them is a pain in the arse, we used to have a big footbath theythat held 30 sheep and you'd do all you wanted to do while the previous bunch were in the footbath, but hanging around watching them is the pits.
I fyou went on facebook you might get someone with a propriety brand that sheep doesn't need to held up in.There's so many planted questions now there,.... some one asks a question and miracously there's someone selling a product.

If you have no problems with lameness and were just footbathing more as a preventative measure, is zinc sulphate the best to use.

That's what we do here, any time they're in the yard they go through the footbath
Because of the six week stretch in our lambing, we dosed the older lambs three weeks ago and dosed them all today both ewes and lambs were footbathed both times., we haven't pared a sheeps foot in years and I gave away my roll over crate last year after pulling it out of the briars.
We don't cull for lameness either

Is it zinc you use?
I’m finding a lot of lame sheep with scald this year, and they are put through the foot bath regularly.
It didn’t suit to hold them in the footbath though, I run them through it 3 times and let stand on concrete. Maybe that’s the problem, and they need to stand in solution.
Is zinc as good as copper?

I don't use copper because it rots any steel it splashes on
