Okay, as most of you remember we closed the other University discussion thread because people refused to discuss it without throwing abusive comments at each other, attacking posters and being general idiots. Its been a fair bit of time since then, so it has been agreed to go with attempt #2. This time, no **** will be taken. This is your only warning: Stick to the Waterford City Forum Charter & Boards.ie Rules.

For those who wish to discuss the pros/cons of a university in WIT, you may do so in this thread. Lets have a civil, friendly debate. Not everybody is going to agree/disagree with a University being granted in Waterford - so don't attack them for having a different opinion to yours. Debate their point by all means, just don't go throwing abuse at them for having such an opinion. Attack the Post. NOT the Poster.

Sorry for a serious first post, but after the last discussion, its needed!

FUSE really arrived too late to be of much value I fear. It needed to be up and running and getting the ear of media and politicians well before the last election and better still the one before, forming during the current admin when the biggest decisions are being taken means there's very little leverage available.

Absolutely nothing in that gives me any confidence in the TUSE, they were asked to trust the process. Basically told to shut up as we know best by our representatives.

I fear our worst fears.

Since the establishment of DTU and MTU, are both those TU's now toe to toe with DCU, UL, UCC etc???

No far from it , I know some staff in CIT and the merger has been a shambles with loads of IR issues and fudges. Things have remained the same on the ground in CIT with just a rebadge in place and the staff in IT Tralee are very unhappy with the CIT domination of the merger.

Application goes in at the end of April

International panel reviews it and gives their opinion

We become a merged TU in the 1st of January 2022 Local Tds tell us to "trust the process" and it will be alright on the night.

Cue lost of bull**** celebrations with TDs and the likes of IBEC telling us this is a "gamechanger for the southeast"

The attention moves away and both institutes are left with massive IR problems , infighting and distrust as has been the case over the last 5 years .

WIT is the victim of an ITCarlow campaign to lessen its influence supported by the government.

Headquarters is decided by new board to be set up outside Waterford . Local tds tell us its good for the region and WIT is not being sidelined.

If there is any questioning the TU post launch , those people are told they need to become a team player and its all good for the region .

Funding promises are not kept by the government but campuses get built in Wexford and Kilkenny anyway . WIT gets a new engineering building promised since 2009 , local tds tell us this is a vote of confidence in WIT

WIT declines as its staff become disillusioned and the TU turns out to be a lesser orgainisation than WIT was before the merger .

Who is the international panel? Is it a true independent review? Could they recommend WIT be upgraded on its own?

Or is it just a BS in BS out panel?

The international panel are a group of academics form the UK and Europe who review the TU applications. The report they did on MTU was an interesting read , they questioned the whole project and its preparation and planning .They also said they thought it lacked vision and efforts to make staff buyin to the project was severely lacking.

They couldn't recommend the it to go forward until a list of changes and targets were reached. The HEA themselves said it was a 2-3 year project to reach those targets but the minister had rubber stamped the merger 6 months after the report and it came to existence 4 months later .The panel were never invited back to check if the targets they had set down had been reached , its all got swept under the carpet as the MTU was a "game changer" for Munster.

Those academics on the panel must be a a bit embarrassed that their reports are getting ignored but I'm sure the massive pay they are getting helps them get over it
