Treats from Galway’s ethnic food shops

Most of the supermarkets around offer ingredients for different regional recipes etc and then to the likes of McCambridges,Morton’s,Sheridans do high quality Mediterranean stuff but there’s got to be hidden gems with undiscovered interesting food out there.
I’ll start with Artazem the Brazilian place on prospect hill.In the small hot deli counter you can get this thing shaped like a pear.It’s spuds purée with a mildly hot chicken centre,very tasty snack.
When out at the NCT centre I sometimes browse in Polonez,which must be Galways biggest Polish food shop.They have stuff from surrounding countries too,including beers so wonderfully obscure the labels are written in cyrilic alphabet.
Let us know about other good things or ingredients of shops in Galway with food from other regions of the world.

Great selection of mushrooms in the Asian shop opposite Sally Longs. Sometimes pop in for oyster mushrooms at a fraction of the cost of McCambridges or Mortons.

That's called Coxinha and it's not spuds, its dough, covered in breadcrumbs.

In that shop you should also try

Kibe - (Keh-Bay) it's like a cross between a sausage roll and stuffing. It's bulgar wheat, sausage meat and loads of fresh mint. You'll find it in the deli section too.
Acai (Ass-eye-ee) ice cream - Very difficult to actually get unless you go to the Gort shop as it sells out fast when they get it in. More a sorbet than an ice cream. Have at home with some sliced banana, granola and pour over some condensed milk.
Paçoquita - (Pah-so-keyta) Small little bite sized lumps of peanut butter. It's dangerously tasty!
Pao de Queijo - (Pow-de-kay-shew) Brazilian cheese bread. You can buy packs to make yourself or find it pre-made in the freezer. Another very tasty treat!
Guaraná Antarctica - A fizzy drink, usually in the fridge. Note, contains caffeine
Brigadeiros - A sweet, chocolatey truffle type ball of gooey deliciousness. Usually found near the tills
Picanha - (Pik-ann-ya) You know how Brazilians live off of tasty barbecue meat, well this is the meat. You'll find big slabs of it in the fridge. I usually buy a slab when having a decent sized barbecue. Cut your steaks about the thickness of your thumb, throw some coarse salt over it, leave for an hour then fire it on to the barbecue. Mmmmm

Lastly, leaving that shop, walking to the side entrance of Debenhams, just past the TK Maxx, you'll find a small Brazilian restaurant. If you ever go in there ask for Feijoada (Fey-shuwa-da). Its a black bean stew with various sausages and cuts of pork. It'll be served with a plate of rice, kale, slivers of fresh orange and Farofa. Note this is typically not on the menu, you often have to specifically ask for it.

Anyone want to hazard a guess what nationality my wife is lol

Ya I often wondered about those slabs of meat.

These guys do Acai from a van at Blackrock. I'm guessing they're also behind the cafe that's to open in the old building there. Very tasty!

The Aroma Foods shop in Westside has lot of great foods. I mainly get spices, rice and such but try their Haldiram range.

South American Empanadas in the market are incredible,. look for the lady in the Venezuelan tent. She not there every week tho.

The only ones I know who deliver are Gannet fishmongers (Ballybane) but obviously not ready-made food. The Bean Tree sell stuff in their outlet near Dunnes in Westside but collection only and now only open on Fridays.

Btw for noodles the best Thai I've tried is Khow Thai in some industrial estate just off the Tuam Road. They deliver within a restricted area.

They are the best around.
Their sweet and sour chicken is to die for too.. Homemade sweet and sour, you can beat it.

The very one. A takeaway but in non-Covid times they had seating for about 12/14 people. Daily specials and easily the best Thai in town. Neo and Thai Garden next best for me.

Agreed, these were my go to asian shops conveniently located around the corner from one another. They had everything I needed to up my stir fry and ramen game.

Since the pandemic I looked for something online and have been impressed with www.asiamarket.ie

Just having the english descriptions & time to browse such a large inventory I found new ingredients, japanese style bowls, and of course a decent selection of instant noods.

I found a new Asian ingredients place down at the bottom of Liosburn estate last week, between there and Terryland veg area,
Been there since December and i think its called Asialand. Quite cheap the lady who did the couneter said tehy were cheapest in town on several things.
MUst get back there before long.

Also, not sure what it's called but in the arcade just down from Terryland veg there is a large Asian/Indian place that I'm not sure how many peoplel are aware of. I rarely get in there cos it's out of my normal beaten track.Good though.

I think there is a place up near where O'Connor's TV repair/rental is half way up that road between Bohermore graveyard and Tescos . Not been in there but I think they opened sometime last year or possibly towards the end of the one before. hope misfortune over time picked for opening hasn't meant they didn't last. They're a bit out of the way and I could see trading during covid not beig the easiest but they would be a specialist so maybe they have.

There's a place down at the end of the run that has ALDI on the West Side too that's Asian/MIddle Eastern. Used to have some items that I would make detours to get to. But not been i recently.

There's an African place on Bohermore towards the square that sells things like plantains and things but not been in there for a while. I think it did fruit, veg and spices but may be more of a European newsagent otherwise.
I mainly go to Asiatic manila and Jasmine about once a week still . cos I do some things in the centre of town.

I think there was an African shop in the other side of the horshesoe that had Ballybane library in but I'm not sure if it still exists.
May be something in the block that has Supervalue /Joyces on Ballybane rd too is there.
Otherwise teh East side of town doesn't seem to be overly well served in terms of Asian/African/Indian ethnic shops , there are a few Polish places on Doughiska rd but the cuisine is pretty different.

It's very good, Terryland Asian Food Market, mainly Indian sub-continent but they do some Arabic and African food also. Seems to be used by many restaurants in town. Friendly staff. Recommended.

Check expiry dates on everything from that place. Found some items 3-4 months out of date. Brought to the attention of staff, a week later and it's back on the shelves for sale

This place is called Green Chilli Asian Foods. I went there on the recommendation of an Indian friend of mine who tells me they have the best stuff of anywhere in Galway. I got 4 different types of popadoms to try at home for ridiculously cheap prices, and they had a great selection of other stuff as well. It's hard to see from the road, it's around the side from the building that the Simon Charity shop is in (which faces onto the road). Definitely worth checking out.

Asiatic on abbey gate definitely have it .... sorry I don’t know about any of the others
