What Whisky/Whiskey are we drinking this month?

I know there's a thread on recommending Whiskeys/Whiskys but there's none on general tasting as far as I can see.

Similar premise to the beer thread, but we'll say month instead of week as drinking a €50/60 bottle of Whiskey/Whisky a week is probably not a good idea...

I picked up a bottle of The Glenlivet Master Distillers Reserve on my travels recently. No age statement.

Not the most complex Whisky in the world. It's quite nice though, smooth and fruity, very strong taste of pears, and a tiny bit of spice. Drank with a splash of water.

Redbreast tastings I've gone to with Midleton Brand Ambassadors have started with Lastau, then onto 12 and then 15 & 21

The order of the Barry Crockett and the 21 could be either/or ....

Interesting set of warnings on their delivery page. Tho I assume they're able to ship and there's no issue within Ireland (though they're operating from a bar?)

Couple of things I've wanted to try but haven't been too fussed to buy a bottle, will give them a go.

Some nice bottles on there, but I don't want to pay pub prices, plus the cost of delivery to drink at home.

As the others have said, go 12, 15, 21. Personally I wouldn't include the Barry Crockett in the same tasting. Different style and might be overpowered a bit by the others.

It would be cool to buy new make and put it into one of those mini oak barrels and give it an age for a few weeks and see what happens. :pac: Maybe throw a drop of port in for a week or two to give it a coating, empty it out then put in the new make.

Id say it would be just like the Dreamcask 3 :pac:

I had thought of doing that a few years back, but the cost of the new make to put in it was still fairly steep. And then you might just end up with awful stuff at the end.

I have some american oak, left over from a wood working project, that I'm thinking of charring and toasting and using to experiment with.

You might think.
However, very small casks age spirit weirdly - seems to be too much wood contact. My first effort produced an insanely woody spirit but it didn't seem aged at all, just wood flavoured.

It's still a work in progress, though. I removed the woody spirit and started again. Seems much better now but time will tell.

It's a 5 litre cask. I'd love to get it to the point where I draw off maybe a bottle a year and top it up so it's like a solera type of thing.

What’s the deal with New Make Spirit? Is the idea that it still needs to be aged in barrels, so you effectively create your own whiskey?

It's a 20cl sample so you won't be putting it in a barrel!

It's interesting to taste new make spirit alongside the end result after barrel aging. I couldn't see any point in buying it if you weren't going to buy some of the end product to compare.

I picked up Knappogue Castle 14, Glendalough Pot Still and Writers Tears Red Head in O’Briens sale yesterday, none of which I’ve tried before.

I’m going to crack the seal on the Writers in a bit and see how it fares.

The infamous father in law struck again the other night when he gave me a large glass of Pogues single malt. He thinks it's amazing stuff and I can't think of a worst Irish whiskey I have tried. He is now threatening to buy me a full bottle. Shane MacGowans piss would taste better. Another dud from West Cork.
