With the recent addition of the Off-topic discussion thread, I am closing the current McGregor thread so that chat going forward can be located in the correct threads. This thread is for MMA related discussion only - any other gossip/showbiz type stories are to be discussed in the off topic thread.

Please make sure to review the updated charter before posting - there have been some amendments made in light of these changes and in posting here you are at all times expected to follow those rules and guidelines.

As before there is a strict rule on no chat to be had here about legal issues or court cases as per the charter - this is a strict no go regardless of where it has or hasn't been posted in the media it is not allowed on boards.ie at all. This is not up for debate and it has been said multiple times now.

Dustin should fight Oliveira for the title if Khabib isn't coming back. Stick Conor in with Gaethje, with the winner to fight for the title by the end of the year.

Oliveira lost to Holloway and Pettis. He beat Ferguson who looks done. He should fight Gaethje/McGregor/Chandler before he gets a title shot.

Who fights Dustin for the title then? Oliveira has made decent advances since those losses which were in 2015 and 2016 and were both at featherweight. Long time passed since then. Chandler the only other person with a decent shout imo, but he needs more than just one win over a top 10 ranked fighter for a title shotm.

Conor in no way deserves a rematch against Dustin. Commercially for the UFC and fighters it makes sense yes but no way Conor deserves it after that performance

Biggest Pay days of Dustin's career, mcgregor has been part time in the sport for years now and only bet a has been cowboy.

Fully agree he desereves nothing with regard to title fights, would be nice to see the ufc set up a sequence of fights among current contenders where overall winner would get the belt.

It has the potential to be a good division but is stifled by this ongoing talk of mcgregor, was watching some of his old fights over the weekend, his movement and relaxed stance, even the look in his eyes has changed. I personally think he is as good as done now. No harm in a third fight though.

The talk of Mcgregor being done is nonsense. He won the first round handily, Poirier said himself after the fight that he was hurt badly by one of his shots but kept a good poker face. With the way people describe the fight and Mcgregor's performance you would swear Dustin did to Conor what Conor did to Alvarez.

As for the title talk, I wouldn't blame Conor either when it's Khabib that's been so utterly vague about retirement. He said he'd come back if someone interests him after the Poirier Mcgregor fight but then a few weeks before the Conor Dustin fight he was retired for good and before that he only wanted GSP. They should have just stripped him from the moment he retired after the Gaethje fight like they did with Cejudo. If Dana had the balls to do that then the lightweight division would have a champion.

This, he also demolished highly ranked Kevin Lee and Tony Ferguson.

Conor hasn't won at Light Weight since 2016 and lost his last two fights at that weight convincingly against the champion and the #1 contender.

If he wants a title shot, he should earn it.

Even DP is out here saying a rematch shouldn't be for any title.

If it happened straight away, then no. However, Dustin more than proved himself worthy of a rematch over the years.

I would prefer to see McGregor train with another gym and have a proper run at the LW division and title and see where that gets him.

From a money perspective (Dana's perspective) a rematch straight away makes sense.

If mcgregor had won his fight I could have seen him and Khabib at it again.

While he is definitley dangerous, he looks half the fighter he was (personal opinion), which is no shock - he barely fights, has changed sports and is ageing . At the moment he is just another fighter in the mix, and one who has a loss to his name in his last fight.

The division could be great if they got some good fights arranged, plebty of talent there but nothing happening.

Ultimately, what makes most sense from Dana's perspective is a combination of what Conor is willing to agree to, and to some extent, an evaluation of whether Conor is beatable by others beyond Khabib and DP as well.

If Conor was open to fighting 1 or 2 non-title fights in order to work his way up to the title, great! This adds at least one UFC PPV where they don't have to have a title fight as headliner (Only Conor does this for UFC). If he wins these working his way up the rankings fights, the build up to the trilogy with DP is stronger and likely results in higher buy rate than a straight rematch - this is a sharper, better Conor etc...

Buuuuut, if he loses in any of those, his ultimate value to the UFC severely weakens. It's one thing to lose to the champion (or the de-facto champion as DP appears to be in Khabib's absence) but any more and there's no case for putting him in a title fight again at LW surely (I know that doesn't mean Dana wouldn't anyway, but it would likely cause legitimate grievances among other LW contenders) and next logical step is concluding the Diaz trilogy so that Conor can go out on a high - not sure what fights would exist for him after that.. Conor's never going to be someone who just fights round the middle of the rankings or not as headliner.

Conor may however only agree to come back to avenge the loss, like he did against Nate, in which case Dana's hands are effectively tied - in order to get the big PPV and maybe live gate (depending on when it happens) even once, Dana may need to allow Conor to go straight to the rematch just for one fight, knowing that if Conor wins, there's going to be more boxing talk and he may not come back to the UFC to defend that title unless Khabib does.

Conor's been chasing the money for a long time now. I don't think that will change, and when he said he was gutted to lose to DP, I'm really not sure he was gutted about anything other than the dent it puts in his future earnings when he fights next.

I really don't think he cares about being the best, being a champion, a legacy, or any of that anymore. It's all one dimensional, which is totally fine, hard to fault given he's at a point where one single fight earns him more than even great UFC fighters make over their entire career.

He could lose his next few fights and still make outrageous money, far more so than other UFC greats who went on downward slides. It's a win/win no matter what he does, who he fights, how badly he might even lose.

There are no wrong steps for Conor in the overall scheme of things. He could finish having lost half a dozen of his most recent fights, make enormous cash, and still be well regarded in terms of his overall UFC legacy and how he impacted the landscape, with nothing but increased exposure for what he does next.

Let them have a rematch...but not for the belt. Winner gets a shot at the belt. If Poirir wants the mcg money fight cool but it will be a joke if it's for the belt.

Yeah, Poirier 100% deserves another shot at the belt, but McGregor certainly doesn't.

I'd be interested to know what Poirier's situation is..
Does he want to take on the rematch for the money and forego an immediate shot at the title?
Is he being forced to fight McGregor in his next fight because McGregor gets what McGregor wants?
Is Dana making him fight McGregor again because it'll be a huge money spinner and hoping Conor wins so he can make the Khabib rematch?
I think Poirier himself said that a rematch shouldn't be for the belt so it must be one of the above, but he also spoke before about his ultimate ambition of being the champ.

Poirier seems to want the rematch. He actually doesn't sound too bothered about a title fight. Whoever the next champ is will constantly have to put up with Khabib comparisons, particularly fighters he beat.
Maybe Dustin Poirier would prefer the McGregor money than being seen as a bit of a paper champ.

Poirier knows it's more lucrative to fight McGregor and he obviously fancies his chances of winning again. If he beats McGregor again, he'll defo get a crack at the belt, so it's a win-win
