What Whisky/Whiskey are we drinking this month?

I know there's a thread on recommending Whiskeys/Whiskys but there's none on general tasting as far as I can see.

Similar premise to the beer thread, but we'll say month instead of week as drinking a €50/60 bottle of Whiskey/Whisky a week is probably not a good idea...

I picked up a bottle of The Glenlivet Master Distillers Reserve on my travels recently. No age statement.

Not the most complex Whisky in the world. It's quite nice though, smooth and fruity, very strong taste of pears, and a tiny bit of spice. Drank with a splash of water.

I really shouldn't have, but after seeing positive feedback on the Drumshanbo single pot still last weekend I went out and got a bottle from O'Brien's. I was slightly underwhelmed by it at first, to be honest, but I'm having it again tonight with a few ice cubes and it's a totally different beast. Glad I added it to my collection.

I text one of the lads last night saying I was like Jimmy Rannable, there was a Drumshanbo massacre, however up this morning at 8 for work and cycled 45kms as if I was drinking water last night. Don't get me wrong I've a few better in the press but at 50quid it's hard to beat

Great buy! Wait till it's about 1/3 down and opens up a little and then smells like a Golden Fruit Almond Christmas Cake. Had a wee bit with me dad the last day, first time since Christmas and it was class.

Some Samuel Gelston’s Single Pot Still Pinot Noir from tonights Three Drams tasting. Sourced from West Cork Distillers. Casks had Pinot Noir in them for six years. Whiskey aged in 18 months in bourbon and 22 months in the Pinot Noir. Lovely tropical fruits on the nose. Pot still spice. Sweet. Fruity. Dry finish. Bit of Butlers chocolate for dessert.

They sold 1800 three drams packs this month. Going well for them so far.

I'm an extremely unsophisticated whiskey drinker - I've hardly met a whisk(e)y yet that I don't like but having tried a Talisker on the urging of a German colleague - it's the first one I really hated, was like drinking whiskey with a tablespoon of salt :eek:

So adding anything into it must be an improvement

I'm on the Kilbeggan that I got from Aldi last Sept/Oct. Was out of regular rotation for a while as my bottles peaked at about 15 between then and xmas. Still very nice to just sip away on.

Now I'm back down to Jameson, Jameson Crested and Kilbeggan. Jaysus that's some amount of booze to go through, mostly alone :eek:

Open up the pubs before I become an alcoholic ffs

I had a post typed up this afternoon with all the whiskeys I'd bought over the last 12 months, but I deleted it instead. Now most of them were bought with significant discounts in Tesco/O'Brien's, but it's still more than I ever imagined I'd spend on spirits!

That said, none of us ever imagined the last 12 months going the way they did. I'm happy I invested in good quality products, considering the same amount would've been spent on nights out/taxis/take-aways in a normal year.

You're making me feel like I must have a really serious problem... I have 40+ unique bottles here - and a few doubles (2x regular) Jameson for instance.

Yeah, that's a fair point. Once we realised we wouldn't be making our annual Christmas trip, we just stocked up on booze. I've tried some really good stuff and regret nothing.

Trying to cut back on buying full bottles and try more samples and then buy the stuff I really enjoy

That's a nice little collection. I'm very much still new to whiskey. Would have been a regular pub goer though and really miss popping down for 2 or 3 pints and a chat with whoever is in. The 15 bottles would have been an all time high for me but with lockdown, no work, almost no driving, I took the opportunity to try some stuff and happy I did.

And you forgot to add the geeky trivia bit that the wine casks are from the Two Paddocks vineyard in New Zealand, run by actor Sam Neill who is the cousin of Johnny Neill of Gelstons!

I see L Mulligans sold out their allocation at €44 but still available on Irish Malts for €45.

I got an O'Briens loyalty card in Jan 2020. I had no idea how many points I had accumulated when I finally redeemed it in December. I was genuinely shocked when the lad behind the counter told me how much I'd spent. I told him it must be a mistake. His reply?...

"That's what everybody says".
