Clothing 101- recommendations

Hi,
I've gotten back in the saddle after years of not cycling. Clocked almost 100km in the past 1.5 weeks (which staying within the 2km radius).

without CV I'd go for a 30 min or 1 hour cycle, average speed 21.8km so not sweating loads. When the world gets back to normal I'd like to think I'd build up to 2 or 2.5 hours.

Currently I wear cyclying shorts, an old tracksuit pants, dryfit tshirt & long sleeve soccer jersey (thin) or a tracksuit top & Northface windstopper jacket (light enough) & gloves if gets chilly/windy.

Does one normally just wear a base layer & jacket? (non-winter)
So am looking for recommendations w/o breaking the bank. Links to sites for specific items would be fantastic! For a short 30 min spin mightn't need the gear as much but there's obviously benefits to having the right gear- not getting too hot/cold, comfort, body breathing better etc.

I see there are good recommendations posted already. However, I find my hands are always the most difficult to keep warm. There are bike specific and quite expensive gloves available, but can still be hit and miss.

There are ski gloves being sold in Aldi this week for about €7, which perform better than any of the bike specific gloves costing about ten times that. I have had them for a few years and find them really good. Although a bit on the bulky side they allow me to cycle on the coldest days.

Not sure you’d have a whole lot of comeback with the Mavic brand being in trouble.
I was given a very generous gift of one of their high end jackets a few years ago and it was excellent-great fit, breathable but certainly not as waterproof as it claimed.
I bought a Gore Shakedry last Christmas 12 months and it is the best piece of cycle clothing I own. Certainly with Rapha you are paying a premium for the brand.

Didn't think of that, although something I'd be more worried about if I was buying a pair of wheels and not a jacket (even if it is an expensive one).

I have the Mavic one ordered but I found the Gore C5 for 199€ on Alltricks so depending on fit when the Mavic arrives, I might send it back. The Gore has the fluo yellow trim and a small pocket, both of which are an advantage for me

€199 is good value for that jacket. My one is the older model 1985 ONE Shakedry and it is as good as the day I got it...You might be a bit disappointed as I was when I saw how little (98g) I got for my money, and it does on first impression almost seem “Emperors clothes” like in its appearance but it is one hell of a jacket.

You find that with those proprietary materials from Gore, the minute someone else uses it in their product, the price goes sky high (see Rapha and their use of both Infinium and Shakedry) Castelli less so, but they now use Infinium in the Perfetto, the replacement for the Gabba..

I have the spatz but the best thing i've bought is feet warmers from amazon. pop a set (If going out at 6am) and never have an issue. I've been out in -3 and they were perfect.

I've had 3 or 4 orders from Decathlon since the summer. They are running slower than usual, but all the stuff arrived.

Has anyone ordered clothing from Neo Pro cycling based in the US? Had an ad pop up on my ipad this morning (big brother is tracking my viewing of all things cycling related I suppose!) and I just had to take a look. While their gear looks nice, I was badly stung buying clothing when I first started cycling 8 years ago as it was usually cheap Chinese knock offs of well known brands that were either 4 sizes too small or had seams that cut into me. As I've never hard of Neo Pro before, I'd like to hear if anyone has actually bought their gear. Ships from Utah in the US and so taxes and charges might/would be an issue

Yeah, their deliveries come from France, as opposed to Ballymun. I reckon it took about 3-4 weeks.

Speculating on the current BoJo the Clown created fiasco, I imagine that current orders are being fulfilled from France and not the UK (there's a huge distribution depot at Caen - about an hour from Cherbourg), so they probably wait til either a) they have enough orders to make up a pallet or similar unit, or b) put it in a container with stock that's going to Dublin, the frequency of which I'd guess is down anyway since nobody can go to the
store (in which case a and b are probably the same anyway)

I got the order there anyway, small package but everything came. The fits great, nice and comfy. Being a taller guy as well as being on the larger side it can sometimes be a bit trickier size wise but it all fits great and everything. Need to get it used over the weekend.

Looking at getting some bibs from galiber.

I havnt bought bib shorts before, what are the ones from galiber like? Hoping they'll help with the cold and comfort out on longer cycles!

I'm looking at the mistral ones or the thermal ones for cycling at the moment! Do they come recommended anyone have any experiences? Or any other recommendations.

I've the regular bib shorts and the thermal bib tights.
Both are great and are my go-to kit although I've only managed to get out in the thermals twice as I pulled my Achilles tendon a week ago. I'll be out of action for another while yet.

My favorite bibs. I'd be XL in normal clothes. XXL fits very well with these

If buying from Galibier they usually give sizing guidance on the page, listen to it

Mercian Pro

The Mistral tights I got about 4 years ago are certainly a fair bit warmer than my regular ones and are getting plenty of use again this Winter. They are the only piece of Galibier kit where the size was a bit on the tight size but they may have sorted this by now.

No they are still a tight fit although the size guide is fairly accurate

i ordered a mistral jacket earlier. measured myself, and found that what *thought* my waist is and what my waist *actually* is are two different things. not that that came as a surprise.
anyway, i ordered based on the size i want to be, not the size i am. i've done way less on the bike over the last few months than i'd usually do, which is a large part of why my waist is how it is.

I keep getting drawn to the Galibier bib tights, but resent the price point.
Question is - is €80 ish what I should be spending?, I'm looking at buying three pairs, so it is a lot of money.
I'm glad to see seth brundles review of them, but is there better at that price point, or am I thinking too much about it all?

i'd have thought that's a very middle of the road, even low, price for decent thermal bib leggings?
you wouldn't want to spend much less than that.

the bib leggings i have i bought in my LBS, i think €75 for standard and €10 more for windproof. made by an italian crowd called gist.
