What does the future hold for Donald Trump? - threadbans in OP

I've seen two main options put forward on this forum, (1) that he'll remain a political force until the 2024 primaries start up and the Republicans have to take him seriously or (2) that he'll be so mired in litigation that he'll have no time for politics.

There are of course other options for the next 4 years - prison, exile, death or ill-health (he isn't young and he's been under stress), no politics but a business success, emperor. But it'd be an interesting exercise for people to lay their cards on the table now and make their predictions.

Personally I think his political influence will die quickly after the Capitol fiasco but someone else will emerge in 2 years, once the memories have waned, to be the standard-bearer for the QAnon wing.

I think the republicans are just trying to figure out the starting point for the voting numbers, and gauging reaction, which is a pretty cowardly way to do things. Will be interesting to see the evidence go on display, and see them squirm in their support.

The dems don't have the numbers to impeach, but have control and can end things where they like, which means airing all of trump's dirty laundry and then making the GOP senators vote to support him. It's a stick they can beat them with for all future election races.

This is literally the equivalent of a jury stating before the trial begins that they will acquit the accused. You would be removed and replaced immediately. They're shameless.

In and of itself it was a sh**y way for Clinton to behave. But obviously it isn't comparable to the effect Trump has had.

It could also happen that the radicals will push more moderate republicans into abstaining or switching, which could flip even more states Democrat, like Georgia in the Senate.

The UK is different in that Britain was always biased against European cooperation, so to say the Tories were taken over by UKip isn't entirely correct when UKip were a Tory faction to begin with. Labour also had a UKip faction.

The gallows erected outside the capitol left no one in doubt that at the core of this mob was the old traditional KKK, old civil war traditionalist who rode on the coattails of a narcissist president who circumvented the traditional political path via the new social media, the greatest communications revolution since the printing press.

Like the lady with the "Don't Tread on Me" flag got trampled to death, the Trump mob will get overrun by the forces established to defend the constitution they tried to overthrow.

20% of the identified insurrectionists may be ex military, but I reckon a good portion of them were already old south traditionalists who didn't like seeing minorities getting ahead.

The funny thing is that people like Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley are lining up to run on the Trump ticket, but neither are a 1/10th of what makes Trump Trump. They can sing the greatest hits, but they don't have that unique chimera of characteristics, the bullish ignorance, the ability to riff, the long, long history of being a kind of cultural icon. Hawley's a stuffed suit. A pencil neck. Cruz was completely emasculated by Trump in the 2016 primary in a notably brutal way. There's no way he can ever be a strongman to the Republican base, because they know that he's far too spineless. Doesn't matter how big a beard he grows.

But they see the potential for power, and it must be unbelievably enticing. It would absolutely kill the both of them to have to row in behind Trump once again for 2024, but it's a complete catch-22. Democratically-speaking, they're screwed with or without Trump because with Trump, you have a very tough ask to get him re-elected, given how he's carried on the last 4 years. That's easy fodder for the Democrats to energise their own base and all the neutrals. Without him, you're looking at a damaging political schism. So, in the short term, I don't know how the Republicans go about getting the presidency back, other than facilitating a better-organised version of what went on during January 6th.

David Hogg is the person she is talking to. Here is his experience of school shootings:

On February 14, 2018, Hogg was a senior at Stoneman Douglas and on campus when a 19-year-old former student of the school entered Building 12 and started shooting with a semi-automatic rifle after pulling the fire alarm. Hogg and other students made an attempt to exit the building, but a janitor instructed the students to go back into the classroom. Hogg credits the janitor for saving them, as the group of students were inadvertently heading towards the shooter. A culinary arts teacher pulled Hogg and others inside her classroom and they hid in a closet

Hogg checked social media and discovered that the shooting was occurring at his high school in real time. He used his cell phone to record the scene, to interview the other students hiding in the closet, and to leave a record in the event that they did not survive the shooting. Hogg's sister, Lauren Hogg, who was a freshman student at the time, corresponded with her brother via text message while the shooting was taking place. After about an hour, SWAT team police officers came into the classroom and escorted them out. Hogg reunited with his sister and father later that day.
