Right now, with demand so high on the higher margin products, the card makers don't appear to be making low/mid cards.

Meaning there are no stock drops, as there is no stock.

Especially EVGA... Overclockers reported EVGA not even responding to them regarding where their ordered stock was. Flat out ignoring one of the largest UK retailers sounds a bit crazy. Suspect they dont have much stock to speak of

It doesn't even make much sense though.

The low/mid range cards used to be made with defective dies from the higher-end.
Where TF are those dies going?

The cards sold from defective dies are selling out too. RTX 3080 is made from the same die as the 3090 (GA102). 3070 and 3060ti are made from the next smaller chip (GA104).

I think he was asking what happens to the GA102 bad dies and I'm sure there are plenty that neve made the specs to be 3080's and I'm not talking about completely trash dies that were completely scrap but dies that were just under the specs for 3080's. And I'm sure there are plenty of them.

The 3080 only has 68 working SM units out of 84 total on the GA102 chip (so 80% of the full chip). That's typically as far as they go for cut-down parts. The most cut-down parts in the 20 series were the 2070 super and the 2060. The 2070 super had 40 working SMs out of 48 on the TU104 die (83%). The 2060 had 30 out of 36 working (also 83%).

Even the 3090 is slightly cut-down (82 out of 84 SMs). They kept all the 100% yield units for the high-price professional/compute cards (A6000 and the A40).

Actually, NVidia did release some even more cut-down parts in the last couple of generations, but they didn't arrive until a couple of years after the original release.

They released a new version of the 2060 (not the super) in 2020 with 30 working SMs, but using the TU104 chip (which was previously only used for the 2070 super and 2080). That's 30/48 working = 62.5%. But that was two years after the original 2060, so it must have taken a long time to accumulate enough chips at that defect level.

They did a similar trick in 2018, releasing an updated 1060 using GP104 (which was previously used only for 1070 and 1080). That has 10 SMs functional out of 20 total, so 50% working. Again, that was over 2 years after the original 1060 came out.

Best option right now is to sit on what you have and turn down the graphics settings. It will either calm down and more affordable options will appear, or it will get worse.

The 3070 and 3060ti do stay in stock for a few minutes to a few hours but the prices can be obscene vs MSRP.

So I've had experience with two 3090s

The MSI Trio X gaming 3090 and FE 3090

Main observations are
1) MSI ran cooler and quieter
2) FE looks a lot nicer
3) MSI only takes 2 slots rather than 3
4) FE uses two cables not MSI 3 cables
5) MSI better for overclocking
6) FE get to avoid MSI dragon Centre crap
7) definitely need better air fan flow for the FE as its more difficult to cool.

Still happier with the FE over the MSI though

Got a good improvement in temps on a 3080 FE by changing case,went back to an airflow focused Coolermaster case from NZXT H500. Bout 5 degrees cooler.

I could use that headroom to overclock but I reckon ill just keep everything cool and quiet. The performance at stock is fine for me.

I still need to get round to undervolting aswell,even cooler hopefully.

Putting my plans to sell the card on hold atm,I thought might see more 6800 XTs in January but nope,seems to be the rarest card of the lot

the prices are disgusting :mad: my 1080ti (gigabyte aorus) was like 850euro on release, that was top end bar titan, now your getting a 70 series for that money. I am after subbing to a streaming service called shadow (virtual dedicated windows 10 gaming pc), long waiting list but if it works i might just give up trying to keep an up to date pc with the crazy gouging happening.

Honestly, if you are considering spending 2000 for a 3080 mobile laptop and you're getting 3070 desktop performance (if you're lucky) then maybe it's better value to buy from scalpers.

One interesting thing here is that Nvidia have essentially produced a 90W 3070 (which they've called a 3080 mobile) by underdriving the silicon.

Shows how inefficient the desktop GPUs are.

They are inefficient because they push the silicon to the limit - partly because if they don't competition will, and partly because we want it.

There were a couple of 3080's for circa 850, they went quick. But yeah, either some serious price gouging or some issues around MSRP.

No, what I got from that video is that the 3080 mobile has similar performance to the 3070 desktop, but with less than half the power consumption.

IMO this is probably fine, since 1440p is a good resolution for a laptop-sized screen. The 3080 desktop is overpowered for that, more suited to 4k or 1440p ultrawide.

It's got a similar cuda core count to the desktop 3070 but it's running much lower clock speeds.

It's not going to be anywhere near a desktop 3070. A 3060 (non ti) at best performance wise I would say.

Still impressive at 90w.
