Good calving cameras / security cameras

Im away getting a degree and so my input on the home farm is gone way way down. I do feel a degree of guilt about leaving the work up to my father, but at the end of the day Ive to do my own thing too.

I was thinking itd be a nice idea to get some calving cameras set up for the spring, itd take some bit of pressure off him if he didn't have to get dressed and go down to check the cows in the small hours. Does anyone have any good recommendations? Theres a good 150 meters between the house and the calving shed, so I don't think WiFi cameras would be much good. Hassle of laying a physical wire that distance though and trying to mind it isnt ideal either.

You'd need to check the specs of individual models but I suspect most fixed position dome cameras do not have a proper optical zoom.

Make sure these cheaper Hikvision cameras are IP cameras and not the video type with BNC connectors as they would require a DVR.

Yes you need a special crimper for the RJ45 plugs. You could also put wall plate sockets on the end of cables and these are usually easier as they are colour coded on the back, you need a punch down tool for the sockets. Then you'd need short pre-made patch leads for connections.

My Reolink 4g camera arrived.

Hardest part of set up was taking the pin off the 48 simcard as my phone and my wife’s phone were both network locked.

Once pin was unlocked it was set up in 2 minutes. Only tested it inside yet. But picture is excellent. Night vision looks good.

Very pleased so far. The fact that it has no wires is a blessing. Makes it very mobile. I plan on setting up a couple of locations in a couple of sheds and moving accordingly depending on cow calving or keeping an eye on heat detection etc.

that's more than adequate for cows calving, might be tempted to have 1 as a spare stand by unit.

Handy but hardly worth it if you have to pay a second phone data bill for a back up.

Battery currently at 89percent.

I logged into the camera at least 30 times yesterday as I am testing it to make sure connection is always made before I commit to the monthly fee with 48 but so far so good.

48 give 100gb a month but the first 1gb is free before you sign up for 7 days which allows you test the signal strength etc.

The camera only uses data when you are watching live. You can see data use live. For me it uses 150-500kbps. So at 100gb a month you could watch it live for 4-5 days straight over the month. Should be ok .....!

There is also an option to have an SD card inserted to record and to record using PIR etc. I didn’t bother as I will not need playback for any reason I can see and I assume this will use a lot of battery as the camera is always on then. I did get the solar charge panel but have not installed it and may not install it as I want the camera mobile between two calving areas we use. I suspect the battery will last a week or two with me loggin in 20 times a day which is extreme end of usage giving a worst case scenario. Easy charge it when needed for a small herd like ours.

Trickle charging via any power source is rarely good for a battery in any case.

The 48.ie offer of 100Gb for 7.99 is only available until the 1st February. Any body interested needs to order sim ASAP and buy membership before then . The sim is free and you need not top up if you decide not to go ahead.

It's also likely the offer will be be extended after that.

Is the SIM unlocked? It was very straight forward after that. No network specific actions required.

You could try a lycamobile sim card. You can pick them up for free at Mace shops or they do be on them hotel/Tourist shelves or order one from Lycamobile.ie
Then use the Data XS plan at €4.99/month it's data only but fine for a Camera. It's 4g and runs on the Three network.
The good thing is you need only top-up for the months you are using the camera

Answered that a few posts up. I am not recording to an SD card and only live viewing when I want.

I am working that it only really used power when I connect up to it to view.

Logged on 30 times yesterday and prob 10 times today and battery at 87 percent. Will monitor over the week to see how it fairs from a battery performance point of view. Can prob get away with a chance once or twice a month (by taking it down and plug into USB plug) I suspect, depending on usage.

were you using it on a different network before? if so it may be using the apn from that.

No, its new. I read somewhere that they run on three or vodafone networks in Ireland, Gomo runs on Eir so that could be an issue.

Can you put the gomo sim into a phone and download an internet speed test app to see what speeds you are getting?

It really should not matter.
But its quite likely that the device shipped with some telco's APN's preconfigured but with lesser known ones omitted.

Have you tried manually setting the APN for GOMO?

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone here might have a similar setup to me. I am having a bit of bother and not making much progress resolving it.

My setup which currently works fine for me is as follows:

Router located in house (ISP is Imagine)
Cat 5 cable runs from router to shed outside
This cable is plugged into the LAN port of a Hikvision NVR
2 separate Cat 5 cables leave the NVR and plug into 2 Hikvision IP cameras.

With this setup i can view both cameras no problem.

What i want to do is as follows:

Router located in house (ISP is Imagine)
Cat 5 cable runs from router to the LAN port of the NVR, NVR located beside the router in the house.
1 Cat 5 cable leaves the NVR in the house and goes out to the shed.
This cable is plugged into a Netgear gigabit Switch, model is GS105.
2 separate Cat 5 cables leave the switch and plug into 2 Hikvision IP cameras.

When i connect it up this way i can only view one of the cameras. the main difference in this setup is the addition of the switch, which seems to be blocking one of the cameras. maybe i need a different type switch or do i now need to setup both cameras with the same IP address? i just don't know enough about it.

The reason i want to set it up this way is to keep the NVR inside in a better environment.

What model NVR are you using?
Does it have more than one RJ45 port on the NVR?
How are Cameras powered? DC adapter in nearby outlet or POE?

Every device on a network switch requires a unique IP address and can't possibly work if they have the same address.

Edit:
I'll assume since you got one camera to work with that switch that you are not using POE.
If the DVR has built in POE Ports then I believe you need to disable them to free up resources, then you connect the DVR and cable coming from cameras directly to your router and forget about the extra RJ45 ports. Cameras and NVR need to all have different IP addresses but in the same range.

Whats my best bet (and best value lol) for either a bullet or ptz 2 or 4mp wifi camera at the minute, from a definite European or uk stockist? I'm not arsed with a straight from Asia job that takes weeks and get stung for custom's.
