What Whisky/Whiskey are we drinking this month?

I know there's a thread on recommending Whiskeys/Whiskys but there's none on general tasting as far as I can see.

Similar premise to the beer thread, but we'll say month instead of week as drinking a €50/60 bottle of Whiskey/Whisky a week is probably not a good idea...

I picked up a bottle of The Glenlivet Master Distillers Reserve on my travels recently. No age statement.

Not the most complex Whisky in the world. It's quite nice though, smooth and fruity, very strong taste of pears, and a tiny bit of spice. Drank with a splash of water.

Remind me to never invite you to my cocktail parties (on the risk that you pass out at the excess); 40+ quid bourbon goes in to some cocktails. Only early enough in the night when the drinker can appreciate it, of course.

Had an Old Fashioned the other week made with Woodford Reserve and the difference between it and the normal pub Jim Beam version was unreal.

I’ve been gifted a bottle of the Sexton by my better half. Never tasted it before but looking forward to cracking it open going by reviews I’ve read online.

Anyone here tried it? Got any recommendations on it?

It comes from Bushmills... strong sherry influence.

If you have a bottle of Black Bush or Bushmills 10 a comparitive taste session could be interesting.

Oh and careful pouring from it... the shape of the bottle and short spout not a good combo.

Yeah its grand at 30 something euro ,ex Bushmills stuff...Blackbush on steroids ...there are some specialist 'finished' Bushmills both with and without their name on it that costs twice as much but is no better .Sherrybomb .If youre in the right mood and/or palate is right it could become your 'desert island whiskey' but occasionally the price shows through .At33-35 its a safe bet .As a gift you will love it .

Has anybody tried the new Dundalgan range in lidl yet? They do sherry, IPA, Stout and Charred cask editions for 25-26 euro. Obvious Caskmates and Black Barrel inspired. Says on the back its West Cork distillers and proudly says it's the largest fully Irish owned distillery. A taster pack of all four would be nice to try.

It originally used to be Cooley stock hence the name Dundalgan which is the original name for Dundalk.

Dundalk Sherry Whiskey doesn't have the same ring to it!

I think thats all West Cork in fact bizarrely they had both it AND WC bottles of charred cask in stock in one branch this week .The Sherry Cask is not what youre going to expect ...(dried fruit sweetness),its just ,eh,sherry...

O'Briens or an ex-Superquinn Supervalu; or an independent offo. The default brand is Angoustora.

Lemon/lime juice is not a substitute for bitters (not even vaguely); but there are sours recipes that don't use bitters anyway - but they do use lemon juice.

If your locally means Dublin:

Nisbets Ilac Centre should have them
Stock South King Street, or Hugh Jordan on Bride Street are other options.

You can get a rather crap glass, metal strainer and rubber gasket shaker in probably every branch of Tiger for a few quid if you're totally stuck.

Supervalus (especially the former Superquinn stores) or indie off licences.

Would Cointreau & orange peel work?

Got some in o Brien’s recently. Have never seen the Boston style shakers in a bricks and mortar shop. I got mine off amazon.

Trying out the Celtic Whiskey Shop samples. Irishman founders Reserve Oloroso Sherry Cask 46 %.Enjoying it more than The Celt II Single Malt Red Wine Cask 46% sample. Enjoying Cask Strength whiskey more lately.

Bitters aren’t used in an whiskey sour. You can add them, but the classic sour is whiskey, sour mix, simple syrup and egg white.
Bitters are used in an old fashioned.

I don’t think there is any good substitute. Lemon/lime juice is sour not bitter. Orange rind/oil.

A lot of whiskey sour recipes call for drops or a spray of bitters as garnish on top of the egg white. I just get them off Amazon.

A few years ago girl left a negative review of the place I work because I used bitters as a garnish on her whiskey sour. Not in a customer-facing role anymore luckily. :rolleyes:

There's a cocktail bar near me in Barcelona that does a really good version/twist on a whiskey sour. They give it a spray of Laphroaig on top and the smoke works brilliantly with the rest of it.
