The comparison was silly. Walsh could be argued as the worst of those three and Mayo sacrificed their best player on Saturday to follow him everywhere. If Walsh jumped into the first row of concrete benches around the edge, Keegan would've hopped in beside him. Hardly conductive to getting easy space and ball

I thought the Croke Park pitch was to be put it mildly in less optimum condition.:(

Even if it's a nice evening weather wise it's not going to be suited nor favourable to a hopefully decent game of football irrespective of the season that's in it.

Pitch has had a lot of games on it in a short period of time. Not much growth either at the moment despite all the artificial lights they use to encourage growth.

It looked fairly cut up, to be fair. Might slow things down a bit.

The IFI have put up highlights footage of Mayo's last All-Ireland win in 1951. Almost seems like a different sport. Doesn't seem like soloing the ball was much of a thing at that point? Not a whole lot of passing going on either, just hoofing of the ball up and down the field. Nobody seemed to hold the ball in possession for any length of time really. Then at the end, Sean Flanagan has a cigarette in his hand as he's being given the Sam Maguire! It would really hammer home just how long it's been since we last won one. The game has transformed so much since then.

Copying the Limerick model so....for both AI wins they've slept in their own houses the night before and travelled up that morning.

Used to be a hell of a lot slower.TBH I'd imagine they're organising a special train with a couple of stops in Mayo and that be it??

I'd imagine the Dublin based lads might stay put and meet up?

I'm friends with an ex player who was based in Dublin for a good.part.of his county career. Always expected that they came.down and then went back up as a group. Might be different with the Covid situation.

You'd assume though that there will be a team meeting on Friday night.

Agreed .
A lot to be said in comparison to their opposition on the day .
Getting out of the scratcher around 12 having a home cooked meal before strolling into Croke park for a warm up .

I think a hotel would be crazier, no? Would they not be confined to individual rooms for the evening.

The train journey is a doddle these days, I wouldn't be surprised if they were stopping off in Maynooth to say a prayer/stretch the legs and have a kick about.

Edit: seems it non stop, they'll be up in just over 2 hours.

Castlebar line doesn't go through Maynooth anyway.

One of the guys who played on the day, Paddy Prendergast, he is 90+, probably closer to 95.

There is also Mick Loftus, an unused sub on the day and former Uachtarán Cumann Lúthchleas Gael.

Yes pretty sure Dr. Mick is his grand uncle.

I was introduced to his mother I believe the day of his Mayo debut.

I believe it was a very unglamorous first day out for Stephen Rochford's management.

Nice article. Love the piece where he says we spend the first half of the week analysing why Mayo won't be able to win i.e. kickouts, Fielding in midfield, Fenton etc. And then come Friday, the pessimism turns into optimism and, without any real basis of a plan, we're convinved the team can do it. Brilliant. And it's so true.

Jesus I can't want till Saturday. I know it's a bit of an anti-climax with not being able to be in Croke Park in person. But it's still a fantastic occasion to look forward to.
I'm living in the Capital, do the banter was kicking off this morning with the Dub folks.
