Any 4k DVD recommendations ?

So far ppl recommended Blade Runner, Blade Runner 2049 and Back to the Future Trilogy,

As far as i know 4k blu ray is region free so i got 3 of the Blue Underground recent releases. Zombie, Maniac and The New York Ripper.

Also got the Cult Discs 4k of Suspiria via Indiegogo.

Don't actually have a 4k tv yet! But the Xbox down samples them to HD.

Blue Underground are getting rave reviews for the quality of the transfers.

Not all 4K discs are created equally in terms of image quality, so for some movies it's just not worth the upgrade from say a standard Blu-ray. And I guess lots of people want movies that will really show off their fancy 4K home cinema set up. It's up to the individual to decide if the movie itself is something they want to sit down and watch.

I think 4K is a gimmick unless you have a screen that is at least 60 inch's.

1080p should be more than enough res for most people.

People buy 4K movies because they look and sound stunning compared to blu rays. Most of us would be upgrading from already owned versions of a film or have seen the film multiple times, so there is no point talking about the story or acting.

My only negative about collecting 4K is they are way too expensive. I wish they would not include the blu rays too and that would knock a bit off.

lol I'm actually an audiofile and listen to a lot of music from DSD files.

No I'm not happy with the compression on blu ray it could look a lot better.

Given that I don't have 20/20 version and my TV is only 42 inchs 4k would be over kill for me.

Another issue many people may not have thought about is video rendering.

The reason 4k may look better compared to 1080p on a 4k screen is because the screen is not able render lower resolutions than 4k.

I was blown away at how good DVDs look on my new laptop.

Its like 70% to 80% the quality of blu ray because the laptop does a very good job at up upscaling DVDs to 1080p.

But on my old Sony laptop that had a 1080p screen DVDs looked so bad they were almost unwatchable.

This was one of the reasons I stopped buying DVDs completely in the 2010s.

Also I noticed in a shop awhile ago a standard HD sports broadcast been show on a 4k TV, the image looked terrible.

I never seen a HD broadcast that looked this bad.

To me the reason the image looked so bad was because the screen was not able to properly render video under 4k.

This may be deliberate on behalf of TV/Screen manufacturers so people will upgrade to 4k.

Its like on my old laptop the difference between blu ray and DVD was night and day.

But on my new laptop that does a much better job at upscaling DVDs can look as good as 80% of blu ray quality.

With good upscaling the difference between UHD blu rays and standard blu rays should be unnoticeable for most people with average size TVs.

On a 42" 1080p screen you won't notice any major upgrade with 4K but upscaling to a 65" 4K Oled you sure will, I will buy the 4K disc versions on the movies I love, but I do need to upgrade my AV amp to take full advantage of the Dolby Atmos DTS-X mixes, I buy a lot of movies on Apple TV as well as picture quality whilst not as good as the disc comes pretty close but the audio mix is never as good as the 4K Disc.
I just hope with the 4K drives in next gen consoles and a drive to purchase new 4K TVs we might see an uptick in purchase of physical media and a drop in price

DVD was very expensive when it came out then with the advent of blu ray which were even more expensive the prices dropped significantly. Blu ray prices are now relatively cheap with the advent of 4k. 8k or some such will come along some time in the not too distant future and the prices of 4k will reduce significantly.

Possibly not. There's diminishing returns in terms of what the human eye can actually distinguish, and the market for optical media can't be in the rude health it was with the streaming services eating their dinner.

Yeah, there seems to be a train of thought that 4K will be the last major physical media in terms of film for the foreseeable future. Can certainly see the logic.
In terms of sales DVDs still dominates, with Blu Ray being a distant second.
UHD Discs are a niche market like laserdisc back in the day.

Well I just ordered Tenet from Amazon US
Comes in around €42, I'm a big Nolan fan and have purchased nearly all of his 4K releases. Gets a pretty good tech review from Sparechange (Good youtube channel for 4K Release reviews and only looks at picture quality and audio quality)

Fair enough, picked up Color out of Space on 4K earlier on in the year from the US. About the only thing that can be annoying is some of the included Blu Rays are region A locked.

I've been ordering from Zavvi until now. Based in what I've seen locally, the likes of Golden Discs are a rip off.

Have picked up some from Golden discs and Tower records locally. From the UK, have used Zoom and Zavvi in the past. Also some sellers on EBay for more niche titles.

From what I remember some of the UK ones are based in the Channel islands, imagine they will get creative with their solutions.

Amazon Italy have had good deals in the past. I've probably bought more there than anywhere.

Avforums have a thread for deals although havent looked there in months.

Very hard to get it to work with vpn had tried lots in the end I got someone I knew was in the states and got them to set up an account for me, once it was set up I changed the password and it's worked fine. I can set my vpn to US and sign onto my account and redeem the code.
So the key is to find someone you know in the states to set up the initial account

Yeah I was going mad looking on the warner uk shop site they are advertising 2 4K discs for £25 but couldnt get the deal to work, turns out it expired on the 2nd of December but they didn't update their website.
Yes I was tempted to buy Tenet from Amazon Spain for £25 wasn't sure it had all the extras or not .

They way it works is, if it is over €22 you have to pay VAT and if over €150 euro you then also have to pay customs duty. Also most carriers will charge a handling fee of around 10euro to collect VAT and or duties.

There is a Facebook group call "Dawn of the Discs" which I find absolutely brillant for getting release dates for movies. He doesnt cater for everything but more boutique labels like Arrow, Indicator, Severin etc aswell as big 4k releases like the recent Back to the Future set.

Yes but Amazon have always applied the Irish VAT anyway, so I assume they will continue to do so at the checkout stage and avoid any potential An Post admin fees (for items under 150)
