Mod Note:
This thread is only for discussing the 2020 Football Championship. It's not to be used to discuss Dublin's dominance of the football championship or any changes in the GAA as a result. There are two threads for these topics:

Also please ensure you read the charter before posting. Specifically the part about abuse and trolling. Abuse of other posters, players (regardless of what they do or have done), managers, referees etc. is not permitted and will be sanctioned. Abuse of players includes, but is not limited to, terms like thug, scum(bag), dirtbag, rat etc. So if you engage in abuse of anyone before, during or after the match and get sanctioned, you have absolutely no excuse.

Please report any posts that cross the line and a mod will get to it in time. This thread is generally exceptionally busy during the game and mods are generally watching it so it may take a while to action some posts.

Starts today and no thread yet !

Anyway as we know it's provincial straight knockout, then two semifinals and a final.

So how will it shape up ?

Leinster
Dublin will win easy enough, Meath and Kildare will judge themselves on how they preform v each other and the winner v Dublin.

Munster
Cork play Kerry in a semifinal.
Now there was a bit of talk of Cork catching Kerry cold, but I don't think that will happen.
Kerry in their last two league games have shown that they will leave nothing to chance.

Ulster
One of Donegal or Tyrone will be out by Sunday night.
Monaghan are the other side of the draw and likely to make the final.

Connacht
A bit like Ulster it's probably a three hours race between Roscommon, Mayo and Galway.
The latter were doing great pre COVID but have been really on the back foot since the restart.
They play Sligo in a SF so a good chance of at least the final.
The other two likely meet in a SF and that will be tight.

Overall I think it will be
Dublin
Kerry
Donegal
Mayo.

In the SF it's Leinster v Ulster and Connacht v Munster.

If Dublin have any 5 in a row hangover, or are struggling with a new manager and s few players gone then we will only see it at that stage.

A Kerry v Mayo SF could be fun, they have gone toe to toe more than once in the last number of years.
I think Mayo could struggle at the back with Kerry's firepower.

So in the heel of the hunt it will be. Dublin v Mayo final with Mayo winning it

Interesting points. one thing I noticed this year is players get within range to easily shoot for a point but instead go backwards or hand pass it sideways. it seems like its just the fear of missing and giving away possession.
also the movement of the full forwards is non existent when their team mates have the ball and are attacking. if teams defend together, why dont they attack together? 1 or 2 forwards in dangerous positions against the oppositions whole defence.

Should have been from outside 45 to inside 14. Takes all the interpretation of distance out of it for the referee too.

The mark is awful.

Mickey Harte made a great point about it on BBC at the weekend, it was brought it to encourage high fielding, but in order to reduce the risk and the contest, a lot of marks are being caught low and sometimes on the slide, so the apparent solution to the apparent problem hasn't had any effect at all of note except slowing the game down.

is the mark a temporary experiment or is it here to stay? im not sure about it, its a dramatic change to the game. I wouldn't really be a fan of it.

5k is a tiny number, very easy for the GAA to keep tabs on and any that were seen for sale unauthorized would very quickly be cancelled and the offending person/club would suffer a serious reprimand.

Well that would work as there are no other events anyway:). No it wouldnt benefit the ordinary fans bar a few lucky ones, but would allow players families, friends etc to be there

Fair enough. If you're right, I'd hope season ticket holders would get preference from the competing counties but in reality it would probably be the prawn sandwich brigade who need a map to croke park.

I think for one year though, they could let it go. Letting all panelists attend would be the way to go as John Kiely pointed out.

If it's rolled out as a concession to the GAA, which is what the poster said I think, then there will be uproar and rightly so.

Make the announcement that it is for all sports events. It's not going to benefit the ordinary fan anyway.

Especially with those in power who are very cautious. On another note It's a ridiculous rule to not allow extended panelists attend provincial finals.

It'll be 5000 of the greatest and finest of society, ie Michael D, TDs, Senators, top civil servants, business leaders, the clergy, a few ambassadors, those RTE journalists that weren't at a certain party. In a nutshell, the same ones that will get the vaccine first, the same ones that will get the lifeboats on a sinking ship first and the same ones who are unlikely to be seen at a GAA league match in early February.

I'm a GAA fan but there would rightfully be uproar if an allowance is made for one sport only. And not to mention the controversies the GAA have been involved n already.

Dublin players also have television sets & colour TV at that if what I'm led to believe is true.

We here in the west only have radio and that's IF it decides to play ball & we can pick up a frequency that will allow us to tune in to a match.

Dublin have the advantage of seeing their opposition play on TV prior to playing them & thus are better prepared where as teams down the country are reliant on the radio which is hit & miss at best.
