At this stage I can't tell if you're trolling or just trying justify a REALLY bad upgrade path :pac:

Increasing CPU grunt to even a basic Ryzen 3-3100 would DOUBLE the performance you get out of any half-decent graphics card.

For sure but it's an AM3+ build. Either way, the old system still needs to be operable for my fiancé to be Player Two, since a 2nd new PC is financially impractical.

The best place for those cpus at this stage is the bin.

You could build an entire PC that performs better than that for the same price as a 3080 using a weaker gpu.

Terrible bottlenecked framerates with massive drops on top of that. Back to the 0.1% and 1% lows argument.

Except the money for doing anything of the sort for PlayerTwo isn't available, and the system still plays fine on Medium to High for the most demanding games and ultra on everything else, especially given that: I already own the hardware. Binning it when it still holds reasonable economic utility is an eWaste concern.

In fact I still have an M4A89GTD-Pro and a functioning Phenom II 1055t. Energy efficiency and how often I'd bother using it is the only reason it's not operating as a glorified Roku. It's also a reasonably decent 2D game platform/system emulator with its IGP.

I meant as a gaming cpu. It really doesn't do fine. Have you looked at the benchmarks that KO linked.

The 0.1% and 1% lows are terrible making most modern games unplayable. Spiking down to 15-20 fps at times.

I mean, even after this "upgrade" (if it were free) you would have a horrific time in most games, even though it's been established in recent days from some of your posts that you have some rare form of framerate blindness :P

You can get entire i5 machines on Ebay for €100 with 8GB of Ram and a HDD that are way better in games.

In most games it's barely as good as a €5 dual core i3.

The best "upgrade" here is sell your old X4 or FX-6 or whatever it is, and use the cash to buy a way better 2nd hand machine that's i5 or i7 based for very little extra cash (if any, to be honest).

I mean at this point, you can buy an office machine with a G2020/i3-3220 or similar on Ebay for about €60, drop in an i7-3770 for €60 more.

For €120 you've a base machine that dumps all over the FX.

ding ding ding: my old man was replacing all of his hardware, piecemeal, trying to find ghosts in the machine (spoiler: I think it was his porn viruses). So I got an exact duplicate of the newer build I made for him (you know minus a case etc). The 89GTD went into retirement with the 1055t for the newer 990FX board (was crossfiring HD 5770s at the time) and CPU refresh. And yeah, the FX-8150 is not overwhelmingly faster than the 1055t, but it is faster.

Well obviously that's a totally different story, as it was just a hand-over and a case of "something is better than nothing and free is better than having to spend". I mean my own parents have something like a G630 in theirs and it's fine.

I think though the issue was with your video posted and the suggestion there could be life in the FX in 2020 from a gaming POV. There was more life in JFK after the shooting.

It depends on the game I guess. If playing mainly older titles it might be okish.

Having constant frame spikes from 60 to 20 or lower while playing would drive me nuts though.

It's not 'random' though and those FPS spikes have direct causes, which make it a bit more predictable and anticipatory, so even if my monitor isn't adaptive sync my tolerance for these framerate dips can be, depending on the situation, eg. not whipping 180 degrees and pissing off the scene renderer, or being tolerant of the stutter when I do.

Watchdogs legion is also a horribly optimised game, random fps drops with a 3600/3080, even though the benchmarks will only show lows of 60-ish but in game it drops down to the high 40s/low 50s at times.

PS5 has only 36 CU's at 2.23Ghz so only 36 RT cores. The Xbox SX has 52 CU's at 1.825Ghz.

The xbox should be a fair bit better at RT but I've no idea if clock speed affects the RT cores or if they have their own clock speeds or what.

The 6800 has 60 CU's clocked at 2.025GHZ with the 6800xt having 72 CU's clocked at 2.25Ghz and the 6900xt having 80CU's also at 2.25Ghz.

6800xt and 6900xt rumored to overclock near 2.5Ghz as well.

It seems the console games are limiting RT to reflections only atm. Their limited CU count means they will probably only use 1 RT feature for most games, reflections being the best fit for a lot of them.

Still managing a native 4k at 30fps on console with them enabled is not bad. Id expect the RDNA2 cards to be good for 1440p/144hz PC gaming at 120fps+ with RT reflections enabled which is fine. Probably still going to be behind Nvidias high end cards with RT enabled but it's a good first outing for them and they are supposed to be working on a DLSS alternative that will come later for those cards as well.

That's interesting, when I'm playing Ubisoft games the CPU is taking about 35% and GPU only 6% but playing steam game releases, the GPU is taking over 60%

For team greens sake I hope Nvidia is correct when it says that AMD's Smart Access Memory isn't a proprietary feature so much as it is an optional setting in the PCIe 4.0 specification, so you might get even faster speeds with a 2021 driver update.

That being the case I could still end up with one and it may come down to something as simple as nvidia working better with MATLAB once you get into hardware acceleration.

SAM is just AMD's name for Direct Storage, which has been technicaly possible on all platforms for a while now.

No, it's not that - but it is probably required by it. It's just enables having a large sized PCIe BAR (i.e. memory mapped chunk) that's as big as the whole card VRAM. Currently sections of the VRAM is mapped in small chunks, and this will allow having the whole lot to be mapped as a big xx GB section. By itself it doesn't bring any benefit, but it allows better optimizations in the driver.

It will be interesting to see the NVidia response and the compatibility, as probably it will only be guaranteed to work on AMD Ryzen 5000 series

I was reading that for Nvidia to implement it accross the board motherboard bios would need an update from the CPU vendors,ie Intel and AMD.

I dont see Intel not implementing it but who knows about AMD.

We could actually have a case of Nvidia promoting and open software but AMD potentially keeping a propriatery solution. Dam 2020

That's the pits alright, there are some 3080's popping up randomly on the various amazon sites but they are gone instantly. I put in a preorder with computeruniverse.net as they indicated availability of an Aorus 3080 within 4 to 6 days, but now they are saying delivery date unknown. I'm trying to run the nvidia-bot (https://github.com/Hari-Nagarajan/nvidia-bot) to see if I have any luck buying a card from amazon, but it crashes out with an error that Chrome is already running which it isn't.

Mindfactory.de had stock of some 3080's this morning, but I don't fancy using a mail forwarding service if I can avoid it.
