Saw it earlier from my bedroom as its search light was active. Never seemed to descend so probably a training exercise. They do quite a bit of that around the Malahide estuary.

some sort of a small jet flew low West of Lough Ree today. No tracking on FR24. Would this be military?

Also noticed a small cessna (probably doing mapping) that was flying over Lough Ree (took off from Knock this morning) disappeared from FR24 suddenly just now i.e. all previously tracking disappeared along with current position.

Not tracking on FR24 may be a function of altitude, as FR24 is dependent on the location of the people feeding data from their receivers to the site. The lower an aircraft, the less likely it is to be picked up by receivers at a distance.

Casa 253 was out west today, you may off seen that. The light aircraft you saw was EI-FII out from Abbeyshrule, they were over at Knock doing some VOR work (Knock was closed today but you can still work off the VOR)

Live in a 10 story apartment block in Dublin, this plane just flew overhead and looked like it couldn't have had much clearance. Flightradar24 states it was at an altitude of 350ft. Is that not incredibly low for flying over built up areas in Dublin city centre?

The altitude FR24 receives from the aircraft transponder is based on standard pressure of 1013.25 hectopascals.

At that time today, the actual atmospheric pressure at Dublin was 1037hPa. The rule of thumb is roughly 30 feet per hPa, so that’s about 720 feet difference, so roughly 1,070 feet.

Q. Do ATC work off the same transponder data and calculations?

ATC radars receive the same data, referenced to 1013 hPa, but our systems automatically adjust it to the local QNH below the transition level for display on screen.

Thanks! Out of curiosity, does anyone know what the minimum flight height above a city/built-up area is for private aviation?

ICAO rules of the air.

4.6 Except when necessary for take-off or landing, or except by permission from the appropriate authority, a VFR flight shall not be flown:
a) over the congested areas of cities, towns or settlements or over an open-air assembly of persons at a height less than 300 m (1 000 ft) above the highest obstacle within a radius of 600 m from the aircraft;
b) elsewhere than as specified in 4.6 a), at a height less than 150 m (500 ft) above the ground or water.

Military mainly are screened out. Bizjets will show but with ownership, route etc redacted.
