I was listening to Funeral by Arcade Fire over the past few days. Getting reacquainted, it had been a good few years since I listened to it. It's as amazing still to be honest. I can't listen to it without being transported back to the Winter of '05 and having it on the go in my discman - remember those - for an extended period. That was the time of my first proper romance and the songs really do bring back so many of the wild wondrous emotions of that time.

But, even taking that into account, objectively it's still an absolute knockout of an album. No song is bad, most are unbelievable. It was so fresh at the time - there was nothing else like it. But now I really appreciated how confident and marvelously layered all the songs are. And there's a euphoria to it, but with a bit of darkness that stops it from becoming sappy.

I got a lump in my throat for this one -

Yeah, I know, we've all heard it a million times. But it immediately made me think of hearing it constantly a the end of the night in the local indie club and every sloshed person in the room - which is to say, everyone - getting all melodramatic and singing along like a fool. That was normal life, guys, wasn't it great? And to think we took it for granted...

I watched the documentary of it on Apple TV the other night and enjoyed it, so stuck the album on today and have been impressed!

Working from home has been great for being able to listen to music while plugging away.

Today I listened to the new Actress album - Karma & Desire. based on a recommendation from a friend. I was a few songs through it and then realised that I had actually listened to it already a couple of weeks ago and hadn't liked it. I find it quite repetitive and draining in parts. The 2nd listen invoked the same feeling about the album. I'm absolutely not averse to repetitive music, quite the opposite generally in fact but this I did not gel with.

I then moved on to Jyoti - Mama, You Can Bet! which again was another recommendation that i had really enjoyed a few weeks ago. Never heard of Jyoti before but I was very impressed with this, it's warm, jazz tainted, great vocals and a good mix which really grabs your interest.

I love Mike Oldfield but am not aware of that album, must give it a listen.

My Dad was a big Mike Oldfield fan back in the day and we always listened to his albums when dragging a caravan around Ireland on family holidays. Brings back great memories and I think a lot of the music still stands up well.

It is fairly abstract in parts, but it is one of my favourites. Has a great leaning to both Spanish and Irish Trad music, almost Galician. It is really good.

    Anti Flag - 20/20 Vision
Or to be more accurate, 20/20 di-vision as its the expanded edition.
It is very apt for the year that's in it.

A masterpiece. "The Things I Tell You" is my particular favourite.

The last album I listened to in full was David Bowie - Metrobolist. Tony Visconti's latest remix project for Bowie's "The Man Who Sold The World".

Not impressed with this at all. Everything except the guitars have been narrowed, no stereo width at all to the drums except for the original title track where they have been brought more to the front. In doing that you can clearly hear why they were buried in the original mix as there are some awkward and sloppy sounding fills from Woodmansey, no disrespect to him as he was a decent drummer.

Visconti's previous remixes for Lodger, Space Oddity and Stage have been okay, but this one doesn't work at all, for me.

Continuing the Top 100 albums theme is Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life, which arrived last week. My only experience of his prior to this was owning the Definitive Collection. I can see why this is regarded so highly, it's fantastic. So 70s, so groovy and funky but so easy to listen to.
