Just ordered one of these guys. We are moving house soon hopefully if it works out well the offer is still going so I can get a 2nd one to setup a mesh system. Didn't want to purchase 2 in case it's not suitable for what I want to do

You can set it yourself. Thats my plan.

If you hit any issues then let us know. I’m moderately tech savvy but I’m not seeing how I can just make the virgin router a modem and use this as a router. Don’t see an option in the Media Hub interface. Wondering if there’s different versions of the Virgin hub.

I think you can turn off the individual wifi signals and leave the LAN active, if your hub doesnt have a 'modem mode' to activate.

Yeah mine is different to that too EN - i have the 4 other menu items on the left but not modem mode. From some research consensus is get a modem or disable the wifi networks on the hub. Ill be going with the latter

Ya, I don’t have the modem mode either. There must be some variations in the modem supplied, even though they all have terrible range.

Makes sense as to why I'd have it too, I got switched to IPv4 to get my SmartDNS set up

Apparently its what iPv address you are set to and at some stage they started setting people to the one that removes that option from the Hub settings. Seems to be an easy thing for them to fix.

Great stuff. I’m not due to receive my router for another few days but will get them to do this in advance. As you say, that was extremely quick by Virgin.

I used their whatsapp messaging service FYI.

Once you have modem mode set and plug everything in, you connect to the router via http://192.168.0.1/. The setup is very quick and intuitive - i didnt need to look at a manual or anything.

Beside the router speedtest has me at 5x what i had before. In some of the dead spots in the house its twice as good as it was, which probably still isnt good enough. Will be getting the second one.

Very very impressed. The router is in our main living room so its brilliant for everything downstairs. Second one will just be to boost speeds upstairs in the bedrooms.

Happy out with that - buying a second one now.

Picked mine up this evening too from Parcel Motel. Intend to use as an access point for gen1 Oculus Quest and Virtual Desktop.

Have to say extremely well packaged, low chance of damage in transit. Box seemed huge and indeed was a lot larger than the router box, but filled with bubble wrap.

Do you find it a bit limited with only 4 maximum devices on 2.4GHz?

I don't really use that band tbh. I had a couple of smart bulbs that needed it but they were more hassle than they were worth. That's just me though of course.

Thanks, I have a few smart bulbs and an older smart tv on that band, I have a spare powerline adaptor which could free up the tv's slot on 2.4 band.

Can I keep my old router running 2.4GHz band and use this for 5GHz connections?

Turned off modem mode but turned of 5ghz on the virgin hub - kept 2.4Ghz on.

5Ghz is on for the router.....both seem to be working fine.

Cant vouch for performance speed on 2.4Ghz and i dont know how your old hub compares to mine, but seems technically possible.

Looking at this and wondering could it be the answer to my problems?

I currently have VM hub 3. Brand new house but despite the heavy insulation, I have almost only one dead zones in the upstairs ensuite house.

My issue however is I have a lot of smart devices (lights switches etc) 30+ and they tend to drop off the network every now and then. Also, there is Zero outside coverage meaning a Ring doorbell or stepping out the back garden for some quite to take a zoom call while the 3-month-old screams is not an option.

Would this modem potentially help with the above issues?

If you have a lot of devices that would need to connect to it, you either need to look at a different option, or look at multiple units of this one. Each router can serve 16 devices simultaneously (more if some of the devices arent all in use at the same time). Im not sure if you get a daisy chain effect from having more than 1 in a mesh arrangement (i.e 16+16+16).

Id say its going to be an improvement on your Virgin hub, but i dont know if its going to solve all those problems for you (at least 1 wont - a couple might).

Thanks for the advice. While at home today I have split the network and put as much as I can on the 5ghz. To see will that help. I might pick up one of these routers anyway as I'm assuming it would have better signal strength than the Hub

I just need it to work 1 meter from the backdoor.

Download the huawei AI Life app - a lot of the functions and ability to check if things are working can be done from that. Otherwise, as i said before; i felt setup was quick and easy.

Let me know how you get on with pairing them into a mesh. I havent done that yet!
