That's a brilliant number, particularly in the streaming/Netflix age! Great to see it's more popular than ever, it's a pretty simple format that obviously has long term sustainability. The UK one has been running over seven and a half years now.

I couldn't remember who it was, not that it matters. When they were looking to recruit families the tag line was 'get paid to watch tv' - I don't actually care whether they do or not but I just can't see that many families commit to it for free.

The post above at least has some info, seems they do get paid, probably not much, not as much as the UK participants - but I knew they had to get something

jaysis watching 12 hours of tv in two sessions a week certainly would feel like a job. Mad that all they get is some free pizza, you would at least expect them to get a few euro given the program is pulling in over 450k viewers

We do come out with some belters, but then some of the folk on the UK one are very funny too. Last night's UK one was a bit bland though, despite it being for comic relief, the 'celeb's' they had on didn't contribute anything extra to the usual

I watched the repeat last night - was a bit low mood wise due to the lockdown - irish people really are funny - some of the things people came out with were hillarious - lifted my mood

if you dont get the appeal of the show and havent given it a decent go you are a bit lacking in humilty and sense of humour

There is no real enlightenment, you either like the format ... or not. As obvious as it sounds; I was sceptical when it first showed up in the UK, thought the idea was a bit daft. But after watching it a few times I got it, it just clicked. Most of the time we watch tv as a family here the most amusing thing is often our own reactions to the nonsense on screen - whether it's a drama, movie, the news ... we take the pish out of everything and amuse ourselves that way, especially if what's on is crap. This is just an extension of that really, we're more amused by the family's reactions than anything they might be watching [as we don't get to see much of that tbh] The households on the show are supposed to represent the average viewer across the country, they have a good mix of youn, old, m/f, students, families, OAPs - it can be amusing to see the varying reactions across the board. If it's not for you, I'd understand, I know a lot of people are puzzled that I enjoy it, they just don't get it. But I don't get the sit com 'Friends', never found it particularly funny, certainly never followed it - but I can see why many do. Could be argued that nothing really ever happens in that show, you're just watching a bunch of late twenties flat mates do everyday things just with a splash of comedy chucked in

When you say franchise fee do you mean the fee paid to the company that originally developed the format? It wouldn't be anywhere close to that for a country as small as Ireland. I'd say the entire production budget per episode would be well below that.

Red Rock and Fair City both cost around €65k per episode apparently, so there is no way TV3 would be paying anywhere close to that per episode of Gogglebox.
