Fed up with videogames

I Havent_Slept For Days

I'm having a breakdown.

I was playing CoD and just had a wave of shame and embarrassment come over me. What the hell am I doing? I’m 32 years old, and I spend my nights shooting an imaginary pixel across the screen to prove I have faster hand eye coordination than some ****ing 12 year old kid across the country. What’s the ****ing point? It feels like I’m consooming some opiate of the masses bull****. Every game another $60. Every PS+ subscription another $20. Every new console another $400. When does it end? And the hours. I don’t even want to think about the hours poured into this various bull****. I’m a grown man and I ****ing spent 100 hours larping as an 19th century cowboy in Red Dead. What in the actual ****? Imagine if I had spent those hours in the gym or getting my degree.

The more I think about videogames the more I realize this is just some corporate bull**** designed to keep man complacent and fixated on spending money. No wonder kids today are always bitching about mental health nowadays. You can’t live up to your true self when you spend your nights pretending to be some ****ing dwarf with a sword that casts spells.

The dude is admitting he has a problem. Most of the advice around here seems to be that it's fine, that his addiction is grand, and that maybe he should switch to something different to give him his fix.

So....who's getting a PS5? Haven't bothered with games much in a few years now but I might treat myself, something to do during the constant lockdowns in the coming years like.

Sure, I could learn an instrument or a language but whats the f*cking point in any of that anymore? I got nowhere to play and nowhere to use another language.

Everything in moderation, I play single player games with a story. There's a need cod every year, by the time you rank up, collect perks, new weapons there's a new one out with new maps and a different style of play.
And now there's season, every few months there's new characters or maps to buy.
They are trying to make games like destiny, the more you play you gain xp to buy new costumes weapon skins etc
And now there's battle royale games where you fight another 100 players to be the last one to survive.
I don't play cod or any other online game
It's not so much you are playing against 12 year olds, it's that you are playing
against people who play the game every day so it gets harder to win a match
Why do people watch sport on tv.
Why do people watch reality TV or soap opera, s
I don't think I'll ever catch up with the single player games I, d like to play
You could say every hobby is a waste of time
Some people say games like Minecraft or like a social space eg you can play with friends and talk to other people
while you play
Unless you are making videos on YouTube no one cares what rank you have in call of duty
I like to watch certain people play games on twitch they can play a complex game and talk to viewers at the same time it's like watching a TV show
If you don't enjoy playing games do something else
Or switch over to games with a story
Like the last of us
I read red dead redemption has quiet a good story with realistic characters
If you go by revenue gaming is bigger than Hollywood movies
Gta games have made 6 billion in revenue
If you look at it one way playing games like call of duty is simply a waste of time
I think bioshock 1 and bioshock infinite are good games in that the story and characters and special effects are as good as most modern movies
I can watch someone play metal gear 3 on YouTube like I watch an action film
The game has a good cast of characters and great voice action
I can see no point in playing cod online
But it's very cleverly designed theres always another weapon or perk to unlock or random items eg a new scope
for your rifle

He's playing a few games not injecting heroin.

If the guy really has a problem with what he's doing he should address it, and not make blanket comments about how video games are a waste of time or something to be embarrassed about.

There is nothing wrong with what he's doing but if he feels for him that there is then that's his issue, I do what he does and don't have any issues.

DEFCON would be a nice example, we often hear about how terrible nuclear war is but this game shows it in its cold and clinical detail with nothing more than 80s style wire graphics. Everything in moderation as someone else stated. Tbh, they can be terribly addictive and i can't think fathom how many hours ive put in to certain classics during the teenage years but i don't regret any of it.
Computer games/sims can also be incredibly educational (e.g. most flight sims or strategy/role play games).

Wouldnt class myself as a gamer and i really only would play ol classics that are 10+ years old but after a drought of what must have been 12+ years, an ol mate of mine and I decided to give an FPS classic the online multiplayer reboot. Bliss

Video games are now as advanced in terms of graphics as a Hollywood movie
they use talented actors to voice the characters
The day when video games were just played by children are long gone
Games like hearthstone or Dota2 are too complex for children to understand
Alot of games are free like fortnite if you want certain items or costumes you have to pay for them
Games like Minecraft are creative you can build whatever you want you start out on a map and build a house a castle
or anything you can imagine

Why don't you just do something else with your time rather then insulting other peoples hobbies? If you cant play games in moderation that's not call of duty's fault. I go to the gym, work full time, have a girlfriend and I play computer games, it's easy to fit them all in.

I love computer games but I'd never play against a random person online, the only time I play online is when I want to socialise with friends. Why didn't you just stop playing red dead 2 like a lot of other people? Why don't you just turn the games console off if your not having fun? I play single players games as I find them more immersive and rewarding than the vast majority of films, books and tv shows. I also like the fact that playing a game requires you to use your brain far more than watching netflix does.

If anybody thinks all games are for kids they clearly know nothing about the games industry. The cost of games drop quickly and they often offer superb value for money, also new consoles last you at least 5 years. Nobody is saying playing games for hours every single day is a good idea.

I'm 40 and I play video games, love em. I play Cod but it's one of those games where the other players can choose to take massive advantages to make the game easier, so I dont play a lot. Rocket League is my current favourite, the spectrum of skill levels is so much wider than that of cod. I've played against the top 10 players in Modern Warfare remastered online free for all, they are all campers, whereas the the top ten guys in Rocket League can do amazing stuff it would take a year or more of training to do.

I also play a golf game and it's so relaxing. RDR2 is the biggest waste of money and memory of a video game ive ever played.

I was abused by a young lad online for playing video games online at my age, I asked him if in 20 years, when video games are going to be amazing, does he think he'll stop playing? No reply

Far too many older men on there, and they are only going to get older, and creepier. Just doesn’t seem right to be letting children into an area where they can be “contacted” by these man-children.

Totally agree, I dont want your kids or anyone under the age of 18 to be in an arena playing video games with me, I'd actually pay a premium to play in an adult only arena where toxic underdeveloped brain little ****s arent present. I've played video games online for 15 years, with no age available for myself but plenty of interactions with other users and I've never been contacted in any context other than the content of the game we just played.

My tastes have evolved. I don't really play shooters any more and never touch the online stuff. I find strategy games to be very engagning and good for the mind though.

I've never understood how Love Island or watching millionaires kick air around a field are more virtuous but we're in a pandemic so I might as well enjoy myself with hobbies and pursuits I actually like.

Yeah I'd be the same as yourself, I don't play any fps shooter games or online games at all anymore and to be honest wouldn't really go near any big AAA titles either. Find a large percentage of them painfully boring. Especially if you've already lived through many years of gaming generations, you've kind of seen most of it before now at this stage.

Have had an Xbox One for about a year and switch it on to play through Resident Evil 4 HD, that was it.

I generally spend most of my gaming time playing older consoles/arcade games or trying to fine tune the hardware that goes with them...either that or an indie title like Spiritfarer on The Switch!

Herself is more into her RPGs. I put together a gaming PC for her birthday so she can play Cyberpunk 2077 when it comes out next month. I'm going to be a PC Gaming widower for quite a while I think :eek:
