I love the Dunraven Arms Hotel in Adare. Old world charm and luxury merged together. I personally don't like 5 star hotels, I don't like the formality. I prefer a very well run 4 star with lots of character and charm.

The Powerscourt hotel in Enniskerry is amazing, as is the Cliff House hotel in Ardmore, Waterford.

Two of the nicest hotels I've ever been to and would fit your criteria nicely. Very pricey, though.

I'd rate Ashford Castle as the best hotel in Ireland I've stayed in. Book a suite instead of a room as the rooms can be a bit small. The King George the 5th restaurant there is excellent. Martin the sommelier has an encyclopedic knowledge of wine, and they have a serious cellar if wine is your thing.

The Europe just outside Killarney is also outstanding, but the restaurant wouldn't be up to the standard of Ashford Castle. Killarney is a difficult town in which to eat well.

I think its always better to short term let when home, there is usually something out of the rif raf price range available at a weekly rate.
My main reason for this is the grottyness of hotels these days. Two tone under a bluelight, cleaners who would rather smoke than actually clean, teenagers who top out at junior cert spraying body fluids all over them after the third date.
I tend to book a week earlier than my arrival and send the wife over with her suitcase full of cleaning products. I always travel light so can turn up a week later with her luggage.

The Abbey in Roscommon. A bit old style but a lovely bar menu, great breakfast, friendly staff and a short walk up town to lovely local pubs. Just across from the railway station for handy travel

Based on ones I've stayed in, Tinakilly House in Wicklow is nice. Dromoland or Falls Hotel in Clare. Lyragh Estate in Kilkenny or the Old Convent in Clogheen Tipperary. Had dinner in Adare Manor but didn't stay but it looked amazing.

Not sure if any had spas because we didn't use them, sorry.

THis thread has reminded me that since we had kids we haven't stayed in a nice hotel for ages.

always found that place incredibly sterile

the hardiman on eyre square is far more charming , stayed in it earlier in the year and they were still refurbishing it

Rubbish. Its a great hotel. If you stay during a mid term break of course you will have families but there are plenty othertimes. Great facilities in the hotel and in the general area.
Anyone who describes it as a kip hasnt a clue
