The US constitution doesn't allow such a mandate, which isn't a walkback.

What is clear is that he will push mask wearing as far as it can be done so legally.

Had anyone other than Trump been in charge, there would be tens of thousands more Americans alive today.

Trump makes it worse every day by holding rallies with his supporters.

There's also one candidate who will uphold the American constitution (Biden) and one who actively rails against it to line his own pockets (Trump).

Again context is key to everything, but keep on posting lies.

Neither of you are American president and you are very wise in hindsight. What criteria are you using to gauge the effectiveness of the Trump administrations response to COVID and what country are you comparing them to?

Then there's demanding states to open when they shouldn't. Him actively politicizing mask wearing. Ignoring multiple warnings from the cdc about the virus. His efforts to downplay the virus. Leaving it up to individual states to buy supplies rather than federal purchasing.

Then there's his superspreading events by holding mask free rallies while the virus was rampant. They never exited the first wave which is an incredible failure.

But yes, this all apparently amounts to orange man bad.

My seemingly unpopular opinion is that the US was always going to get hit by Covid-19 like it has been, regardless of who was president. They're a nation that doesn't do universal healthcare, and they're a nation that is all about personal freedom and rights. The entire Western world has a general attitude to this stuff that isn't compatible with dealing with a pandemic. Not everyone, but enough.

My opinion is largely based on Vietnam's response and seeing everyone take it seriously from the get go. I think it's fair to say that Covid-19 puts far more responsibility on the populace and I don't think swine flu is that comparable to Covid-19 in terms of what is required by regular people to stop it.

While the pandemic was in it's early days, Trump was shouting at states not to lockdown, he discouraged mask wearing, Trump pushed untested treatments, and gave dangerous advice. He berated governors for going into lockdown. He publicly argued with his chief medical officer.

Fast forward to today, and rates are still high, and Trump is holding rallies with most in attendance not wearing masks and not social distancing (the kind of which led to the death of Herman Cain).

One doesn't need to wait until the aftermath of an event to know that decisions were wrong, especially when they have been as wrong as Trump has been.

0.04% of population in this state has died as numbers of cases as consequence of more testing rise, but with few hospitalisations and tiny number of deaths.

You would need to be pretty desperate to try and attribute political blame in either instance.

60 Million Americans contracted H1N1 in the first year and the only reason 200,000 of those weren't dead within 8 months was because it wasn't COVID-19! It's absurd to compare the two. H1N1 was influenza. COVID-19 is viral pneumonia.

What would have happened if Trump had not put the travel restrictions in place in time? We can't say for sure but Dr. Fauci sure believes that the death rate would very likely have been far greater (many of the models predicted millions would die let's not forget). Anti-Trumpers like to say that many people still came in as if this negates the fact that millions were prevented from coming in but it of course does not. It's an absurdity to suggest as much.

There were an estimated 700mn - 1.4bn global cases to go with the estimated 60mn US cases. 60mn as a percentage of 1.4bn is 4.3% - 8.6%. There were also 12,000 deaths in the US compared to the about 285,000 globally - 4.2%

With Covid, the US accounts for about 22% of all cases and 21% of all deaths.

There are no two ways about it, relative to the rest of the planet the US response to Covid-19 has been far, far worse to that of N1H1.

As it turns out, poor and weak leadership resulting in encouraging people to pack into venues in huge numbers and ignore social distancing, being dismissive of wearing masks, railing against states imposing lockdown measures and goading people into armed protests against them, peddling unproven cures/preventative measures, and undermining and criticising experts like Fauci on the matter all play large roles in this.
