Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Interested to see what Toyota is doing now, milking lemans for years or spreading out to other series

    Enjoyed the race.
In retrospect I've no issue with Toyota winning with 'no' competition.
They made a car that survived the 24 hours completely issue free (barring penalties) and 'hollow' victories were perfectly fine when Porsche and Audi were racking them up.
They've put in the effort and it's finally come good.

Major issues with the ACO screwing up the regulations to basically remove any tactics whatsoever from the race from ridiculous stint rules to allowing work while refueling. Seeing a lot of negative backlash to them.

Although im not a fan of seeing it turned into the Alonso show, I have to admit he seemed to just genuinely enjoy his time and didn't activily seek the limelight, it just went looking for him.

Also Ant Davidson must be fairly sore to be dropped to reserve for Lopez who proceeded to almost single handedly lose a 2 minute lead to the number 8 during the night...well either Lopez was shockingly slow in that stint (Alonso's speed not withstanding) or Toyota reigned him in to allow the 8 to catch up!

Roll on 2019, as the man says:

".... anything that happens before or after, It's just waiting"

Audi will be back when electric cars can have quick battery changes and last the distance.
It was mentioned last night that future rules favour hydrogen power and BMW in particular are already working on this.
Toyota will only milk it until then as hybrid technology will be pushed one side. They either stay now and pick up a couple of cheap wins or pull out and develop one of the above

Toyota also have been working on a "Non LMP1" car apparently

After an excellent Sebring in March, the WEC is now at Spa, and it's snowing...

And now perfect sunshine, gotta love Spa!

We are looking to head to Spa for the race next April. I'm confused about the race day. It looks like it happens on a Saturday. Maybe someone here knows. We went to the one in Silverstone last year which was on the Sunday.

Spa is always on the Saturday.

New season is underway. Toyota still comfortably ahead after 20 minutes.

Good to see Peugeot coming back. Those years of them going head to head against Audi were great! Fond memories!

    Positives steps.
Aston Martin, Toyota, Peugeot and Brabham all so far brining the Hyper to Le Mans

LeMans starting today at 1.30pm Irish time. Good to see a real mix of teams, lots of well known drivers in the different series, and this year's race has two all-women driver teams. I wish them well.

Fairly low key build up this year. Not much excitement at the front but hopefully rebellion will be able to take the fight to toyota. Shame no corvettes there this year :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,868 ✭✭✭donspeekinglesh

    Very strange seeing empty stands.

Two Irish drivers to watch out for. Both in GT - Charlie Eastwood in the 90 Aston. And Matt Griffin in the 55 Ferrari.

Probably won't be much excitement in P1, but P2 and both GT classes should be great.

Not a fan of the handicap system in LMP1, makes a mockery of racing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,868 ✭✭✭donspeekinglesh

Yeah, I despise success ballast. Not a fan of BoP, but it's far better than success ballast.

But they aren't running success weights this weekend, I don't think.

Very nearly a big crash there. The 88 was lucky, not his fault though.

Eurosport player 40 quid for the year to watch this all the way through. Good for the TdF and snooker also

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,868 ✭✭✭donspeekinglesh

I tried the Eurosport Player a few years ago (got a very cheap bargain), but could never get the Android TV app to work reliably. I just buy the WEC app as I watch all the races.

Here comes the tunder and lighting!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,868 ✭✭✭donspeekinglesh

Good race so far in P2 and GTE Pro.

Safety car out now for the first time. Charlie Eastwood's car is running second in Am, but Griffin is running second last after some accident damage and a delaminated tire. (The driver in last at the moment is 74 years old! His car lost over 2 hours with issues)

Matt Griffin's 55 has been retired. Too much damage. Garage door is down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,868 ✭✭✭donspeekinglesh

Starting to see some attrition now. The 30 car had a heavy crash and is out. The ByKolles car had a big crash too, but is now back to the pits. The Jackie Chan DC car is stopped on track as was the 16 G-Drive.

The 8 is now in third place due to brake cooling issues, but should catch the 1 Rebellion easily enough once the safety car goes in.

Two Irish drivers to watch out for. Both in GT - Charlie Eastwood in the 90 Aston. And Matt Griffin in the 55 Ferrari.

Bit of a lull at the moment so studying my spotter guide and I've noticed there's a third Irish driver. Well, Irish/Cypriot - Ryan Cullen. Though I've also seen that he was born in Somerset. Anyway, he was in the 16 which is retired now.

Charlie Eastwood's 90 is in second in class, half a second off the lead, after 11 and a half hours of racing.

So will the 7 Toyota be able to get back onto the podium. Will Toyota 8 hang on from here. Close race in GT Pro

    Eastwood leading in GT AM

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,868 ✭✭✭donspeekinglesh

Brake worries for the Rebellions. They're still running close together in 2nd and 3rd. Now engine temp issues for the lead car in LMP2, though his lead is 2 minutes.

Charlie Eastwood's car is leading by 2 min 50 seconds.

Safety Car out with 38 mins to go

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,868 ✭✭✭donspeekinglesh

Green with 22 minutes to go. Three cars within a second fighting over second in GT Am

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,868 ✭✭✭donspeekinglesh

5 seconds between the top 2 in LMP2 with 6 minutes to go

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,354 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

That was a really entertaining race despite the lack of LM P1 competition, P2 was a hard push the full 24hrs evidenced by the amount of brake and suspension failures

But a class win for Charlie Eastwood in GTAm is outstanding! Huge day for Irish motorsport and his TF team

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,868 ✭✭✭donspeekinglesh

Yeah, was a good race. The unreliability in P1 helped keep the interest there. The other classes were all close for most of the race.

Great result for Eastwood. Pity the Irish media are unlikely to pay much attention to it.

Very good result for the 50 team. Three rookie drivers, with very little prototype experience finished 9th in P2 (13th overall).

Wasn't able to see any of it this year sadly due to other commitments. Sounds like it was decent race, though the monsoon rain predicted never came :)

So that's the end of LMP1 at Le Mans. Shame it went out with a bit of a whimper as the Rebellion challenge never really took hold. Really looking forward to the hypercar era. I think there are good times ahead. It leaves some great memories though :)

The new Toyota GT Hypercar made an appearance at the weekend. Even in the camo it looks nice!

    Peugeot-Le-Mans-Hypercar-1-e1600662774301.jpg

    And Peugeot released a teaser.

Endurance racing really should kick into another gear with these new rules. Great idea to get more entrants.

^^ That is one ugly toyota imo, maybe the angle doesn't do it any favours.

Can't wait for the hypercar era alright. So happy imsa and the aco have finally worked together on an equivalence formula. Having the top LM class eligible for sebring and the petite le mans is fantastic. Back in the audi vs Peugeot days, those along with LM itself were my favorite races of the year.

In case anyone is interested Nurburgring 24 is on this weekend. 2 and a half hours in. Very wet and forecast to rain pretty much to the end. Very impressive driving standards so far given the conditions. Hopefully will be this wet for f1 race there later.

Spa 24hrs is on this weekend.

Any context behind that tweet? Would be great news if true.

Looking forward to Spa 24 hours. First time i will get to watch it live. Good timing with the lockdown :) .

I see Spa 24h is on sky sports F1. Will keep an eye on it. The greatest track we still have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,010 ✭✭✭PsychoPete

Caught a few hours of Spa 24hr yesterday, I do like some motorsport on a Sunday morning. I think it's going to be an interesting six hours to go in this
