I posted a few weeks ago that I thought Scottish independence was creeping towards reality and I see it is now formally part of the SNP manifesto for the election next year.

Will it happen? I think the current 55% pro independence polling is more likely to increase through whatever way brexit ends up rather than decrease. I also don't think the Tory party are getting any more popular in Scotland and on the contrary are going to struggle to maintain relevance there.

Unless a referendum is completely denied (which brings a lot of new problems) I could well see Scotland going independent within the next two years, or at least voting for it.

Trump is hoping his key demo - uneducated white people - decide this election.

There really are no Republican votes left for Trump to win in this demo in many states, where he already has around 80% of this vote. Plus most likely to go red anyway.

But in the midwest swing states, the non college educated vote was split a lot more 50-50, Democrats to Republicans. Trump needs to convince these non college rust belt Democrats that the radical left has taken over their party, and that this street carnage will only be worse if Biden gets back in. Look at the tone of the RNC; not a peep about immigrants or the wall, it was all fear, fear, fear, radicals, leftists, looters, violence.

There are, of course, several problems with this:

1. These people voted Biden in as VP before, and there was none of this carry on. It has instead escalated wildly under Trump.

2. Tied to this, it's very hard to run on a Law and Order mandate as the incumbent.

3. Many non college Democrats supported Sanders and see Biden as an establishment pick. I.e. completely non radical.

4. For every non college vote this approach might gain in the rust belt, he loses votes with educated whites in the sun belt (Texas, Arizona etc).

5. Women. How many of the protesters are suburban women? (Moms of Portland, etc).

6. Whatever chance he had of selling to black voters the "Democrats just assume you'll vote for them" line, probably not helped by such overt opposition to BLM and the peaceful protestors.

So my gut is that this will be a half step forward, and at leaat six steps back for him. Impressively calamitous, even for him.

Portland has been a target for these people for years. It’s not a new phenomenon, it’s just the scale of it has increased. People being drawn to the nastiness by the election rhetoric

Yeah that's my take on it as well. It's dominating the media but the violence is largely contained to smaller instances.

At the same time - what concerns me is a scenario where the likes of Rittenhouse becomes a hero. Protesters, liberals and minorities have been heavily dehumanised by the likes of Fox news and other right wing outlets in conjunction with an avalanche of manipulative and misleading content on social media.

There are countless more Rittenhouses out there just waiting for an excuse and the media / president are doing their best to get them out on the streets with their guns. That's the point where I worry things will kick off and trying to take away accountability from Rittenhouse has really serious consequences imo.

People traveling from different cities and in some cases different states to act as armed vigilante militia and "protect local businesses" is definitely an escalation but I don't think the entire nation is on fire as some outlets would have you belive. Its being fueled by the idea that all protests turn violent. Its a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy. The whole thing with Rittenhouse is just absurd.

Apart from the ongoing Portland protests and the most recent flare-up in Kenosha, I think protests, although widespread, are being conducted peacefully. Trump is itching for a fight so he can project the hard man image his supporters need, hence sending paramilitary federal agents into Portland to inflame the situation. There aren't widespread riots or looting on a daily basis despite what Fox "News" tries to portray.

I appreciate that the administration's take on the protesters is going to be wildly skewed and propagandised, but the level of street violence reported by the wider media and the skirmishes between protesters and Trump supporting militia seem to be escalating pretty seriously?

Most large US cities are reporting a spike in homicides so it's not restricted to Portland.

It's hard to tell whether they are on the cusp of wide spread civil unrest or whether the clashes are on the whole fairly minor in the grand scheme and the media is just vying for viewership and clicks.

Ridiculously over-reported. Perfect opportunity for the Republicans to push that all the protests are violent and causing destruction and that anyone who acts against it is acting in self defense, as is the narrative that's being spun for Rittenhouse now.

You just have to look at how the protests by people refusing the lockdown and wear masks walking around carrying semi automatic guns outside municipal buildings and stopping traffic was reported vs this.

Totally being over reported. Trump needs to stoke fear to motivate his base and get the vote out. It's textbook 1930s fearmongering and othering. Creating imaginary threats of the "radical left" and antifa etc. Problem is he's been in charge the last 3.5 years so the over reporting of riots along with his threats of "look what Biden's America will look like" are actually reminding swing voters of what his America looks like. Defending a murderer just shows how weak a candidate he is i.e. he is so captive to his far right base that he has to appease them rather than do the right thing and condemn all violence.

Two things I love about PopOS are the automatic tiling and the spatially congruent workspaces (both might GNOME features).

I usually work on a super wide monitor and I can quickly have a really clean work state, e.g.,:

Top workspace might be a terminal and the file system, split 50/50 across the screen.
2nd workspace down might be a python IDE
3rd might be a word processor
Then the bottom workspace might be whatsapp and a browser, or slack, or whatever

Just zipping up and down is so nice, really intuitive.

Automatic tiling then just boosts flexibility, e.g., on the word processor, if I need to google something, I hit super+B, chrome opens up, automatically tiled, so the two windows are side by side. I search for what I need, hit super+W and it's chrome is gone.

If you don’t really understand repos and kernels you can get into an unrecoverable mess. Certainly could back when I was using Mint years ago.

I use Mac OS. I work on Linux machines every day. I don’t really have an issue. 99% of what I do is either in a browser/IDE or else on a terminal. What applications do people run into trouble with?

It's very much a work in progress, but it's absolutely a positive development. As with most Linux, lots of passionate folks getting stuck into it.

Well I followed his advice to install that xanmod thing, and it wasn't compatible with my GPU (Nvidia... something something). Uninstalled xanmod, and suddenly my wifi disappeared, among other things. Was close to formatting until I realised that I just had to change my "default kernel" back to the "generic" thing-a-me-bob. Whatever all that means. Anyway we're back in business.
