Because the EU is not another government, it is a supranational body. Suggesting commissioners should be elected is a step towards a federal EU as opposed to a supranational body. The EU is a body constituted by its member states who delegate authority to certain people to act in their collective interest.

The Council (in essence the member states) is the most important body for a reason. The member states delegate certain individuals to run the affairs of the EU - akin to a civil service.

The fact that commissioners can not be withdrawn by the member state is a simply practical element as otherwise there would be too much dysfunction. Thankfully all the member states have agreed that this is the best way to work.

I wonder if MM & Leo actually did interfere to save Hogan, because that is what it seems likely will happen. I'd be pretty sure that Leo would know how the Commission is meant to operate.

Martin and Varadkar have nt told the Commission what to do.

They expressed their dissatisfaction at the whole situation and made it clear that the decision was for Boss Lady and Boss Lady alone.

There was also no interference to save him.

Hogan is an embarrassment to the Irish goverment and the EU Commission.

What Lucinda neglected to comment on was the fact that he has lied through his teeth to VDL too.

She did raise the point that I hadn't thought about, that his run and the Irish Gov's support of it, for the WTO may have an effect on the outcome here.

He spoke a lot of sense if what he said is true about citizens information website.
He didn't do anything wrong in that case
His whole story sounds completely believable to be honest. He also has a very unique role in Europe.

Between 2002-11 he was opposition spokesperson for Enterprise, Trade & Employment and then Environmental Spokesperson.

I think Michael Noonan might have been opposition spokesperson for Finance and should have been the person asking questions about Bank regulation.

Fianna Fail were totally responsible for the financial crash. They are the ones who were big on light regulation.
