The facility at Shannon Freezone Business Park, Co. Clare comprising 8,300m2 in two separate buildings will be designed to meet global regulatory requirements, including the cGMP required by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The unit at Shannon will be used for the manufacture of MeiraGTx viral vectors for gene therapies and the plasmid DNA that is one of the starting materials in viral vector production.
BA-owner IAG to raise 2.75 bln euros in capital increase (Reuters) LONDON, July 31 (Reuters) - IAG, owner of British Airways, said it planned to raise 2.75 billion euros in a capital increase backed by its biggest shareholder Qatar Airways, to strengthen its finances after the pandemic wiped out the travel market. The airline group, which also owns Iberia and Aer Lingus, reported an operating loss of 1.365 billion euros for the second quarter, broadly in line with a consensus forecast for a loss of 1.395 billion euros.
Aer Lingus job cuts could affect future viability of Cork and Shannon airports (Irish Examiner) The viability of Cork and Shannon airports is under threat as Aer Lingus carries out a review of its operations which could put hundreds of jobs at risk. The scale of the crisis — which will have a significant impact on business across Munster — has led to calls for the Government to bail out the aviation industry, which has been devastated by the Covid-19 crisis. Including ground staff and cabin crew, Aer Lingus employs around 350 people at the two airports, with over half of those employed in Cork.

I have future needs to fly to the USA and other EU countries but I'm just not allowed by both DFA advice and also by the Trump administration. At present, although a nuisance(when allowed) will have direct flights out of Dublin as I really don't want to use the UK(from SNN) for the USA as I lose pre clearance. It is much easier to transit with United through Newark. Often I arrive in at one gate and 40 mins later my flight can leave from the gate next to it. In one way I'm well able to conduct work my MS Teams and travel can be a burden so maybe business demands might also drop in the future because of a new way of working. I can see a higher demand on United, if they return in 2021 because Delta won't be back until 2022.

Shannon Group welcomes €2.6 million funding for Shannon Heritage (Shannon Group)Welcoming the funding announcement, following its submission to Government for support for its Shannon Heritage business, Mary Considine, CEO, Shannon Group said: “The announcement by Hildegarde Naughton, Minister of State for International Road Transport and Logistics of €2.6 million funding to enable us keep our Shannon Heritage sites open to the end of December is very welcome. “The ongoing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has been devastating for our heritage business which is hugely dependent on international visitors. With visitor numbers to our owned sites down -80% year-to-date on last year, we sought Government funding to support us through this unprecedented crisis. “Today’s announcement is great news, not only for our employees at Bunratty Castle & Folk Park and King John’s Castle, but for the mid-west tourism industry. We know the importance of these sites to tourism in the region. We would like to thank Minister Naughton, the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, and the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform for this much needed support.”
Chairman of Save our Shannon Airport, Denis Vaughan (Labour) has questioned the financial risks associated with developing a €18m specialist aircraft painting hangar adjacent to Shannon Free Zone. Over 150 jobs were created during the 14 month construction phase. “No other investors saw a commercial opportunity to invest in a new hanger in any Irish airport over the last twenty years. We wonder what risk analysis was undertaken to justify an absolutely gigantic hanger for painting an aircraft which has ceased production and where only 36 aircraft are owned by European airlines,” he said.
Violet-Anne Wynne (Sinn Féin) has stated that the decision to separate Shannon Airport from the Dublin Airport Authority in 2012 has proved a disaster. Sinn Féin, along with the trade union movement, opposed the separation then and, unfortunately, the passenger traffic numbers pre-Covid vindicated our stance. It is now time for the government to admit their failure and agree to the amalgamation of Shannon Airport under the DAA once again.
