Spirit Radio from Three Rock seems to be back on air fully but without any audio processing (and 92.2 from Slievethoul appears to be a rebroadcast of Three Rock). Possibly it's microwave fed from Killarney Road but doesn't explain the lack of audio processing. As a result massive variances in levels between songs, liners, etc. and the studio mic is almost inaudible.

MW seems to be silent but the signal is usually very weak anyway so could just be my location.

They must be having serious issues for so much of their transmission chain to seemingly be out of commission.

I wonder how efficient an AM transmitter is? For example, if the output is 5kW - how much electricity does it need to achieve this?

Modern FM transmitters would be around 70% efficient, so a 5kW FM transmitter at full power uses around 7.1kW. With a unit price of 20c per kWh, this would cost around €1,036/month to run.

How does that work in practise? I don't think that COMREG just let stations plonk FM rigs wherever they fancy and to whomever that volunteers. Isn't there certain minimal standards that any transmission site needs to meet before it can be allowed to switch on? It's not like the old days when everybody would use Ernie's and The Blue Light or Farmer Jim's hen shack up in Killinarden

Hot FM blank this morning again. Extreme was blank when I first listened, but audio restored now.

I’d imagine the AM transmitter costs a fortune to run 24 hours a day, I know a lot of the FM relays around the country are in premises that the owners are supporters of the station and do it for next to nothing.

Regarding Spirit, sounds to me as if they had network/data issues at their studio. Their stream was offline (not just no audio, but source was not connected). It's possible they are a using point-to-point provider for data and the antenna took a knock in the wind.

When there was some audio from Three Rock, it was very low (maybe it was some backup audio?). The audio on 92.2 was worse - like an amplified version of the poor audio on 89.9. Maybe they are using FM re-broadcast receivers at some of their smaller sites?

Only them afaik - their stream was also down at the time according to reports and other relays where also off so the issue may not have been at 3 Rock (as an aside a problem at 3 Rock could be resolved very quickly )

99.5 is the Energy AM relay
The carrier on 94.1 is gone.

Phever also off and didn't receive anything on 87.6 - Chill would have been receivable here in the past.

Listening to Phever yesterday on 88.1 in Rathfarnham it’s still very low powered and sporadic which is a pity for such a specialist music station

This afternoon from around the Ballinteer area:
Initially, I think I was picking up BBC Radio One on 88,1 and then I heard dance music - that must have been Phever coming in on it. Weak alright.

Extreme has a very strong signal on 93.2.

RetroNow comes in (very weakly) and out on 105.2.
