My sister in law lived there during the Soviet Union era and ironically she was never hungry, cold or lacked nice clothes or an education. Medication was easily acquired. Shops were always full and she seen those propaganda video's and clips from the 80's honed in on the shop fronts and writing on flicks, it wasn't even the Russian language FFS lol it was somewhere else. Now I know people will say that those were probably satellite state's of the Union and lambast me with their knowledge of the history behind the iron curtain... They also had access to transport and hop on a train and go anywhere, every country had their faults Ireland wasn't exactly the bastion of the western world up until the late 80's. A lot of us were without basic heated houses, back boiler's were only for the privelaged. Many only had an open fire, and there was frequent electrical outages, especially in the Kerry and West Limerick area. Tarbert could shut down at anytime not sure was it an engineering problem or the coal was arriving at the terminal late. I lived in Edinburgh in the 90's and a lot of people didn't know that the South was safe enough from the trouble's in the north. Friends of mine from the middle east a few Iraq'is my own age in their mid 40's thought the whole of Ireland was at war for years and was peppered with riots and petrol bombings. Same as the Lebonese they thought similarly. Russia is absolutely amazing, I'm going to get the trans Siberian express from Moscow down in a few years and I can't wait

People are normal and friendly. If you lived in the equivalent in London or Paris or Malmo you'd be murdered. And Putin might be an asshole but at least he's honest about it unlike sacks of shyte like Merkel.

I take you have either never heard of or have forgotten about the spies the Putin had killed in Britain by poison or radiation. He also does that across Europe too and gets away with it. Is that the kind of Country you would like to live in where he could have you or a family member killed just like that and there is nothing you could do to stop it? Hell the Russians don't even want it now but because of the way he holds power are unfortunatly powerless to stop the dictator.

All these Russia lovers wouldn't last too long out there I'd say.

It's been 6 months and every bit of effort has gone into finding one, why do people scoff that a country with a huge population with a long history of science, might be the first one to discover and release it. Nobody would be scoffing at it if it was the USA, yet they have a literal imbecile as president? But those Russians, oh god no, we won't trust them.

dotsman wrote: » It's not "propaganda". In the brief history of the Soviet Union: millions were slaughtered by their own government; the entire population was kept in abject poverty; the entire population was oppressed via secret police and a policy of killing/torturing anyone who doesn't toe the line; any "deviants" (i.e. minorities) were violently suppressed; invaded and supported wars around the world resulting in countless suffering; half of Europe was invaded and ruthlessly oppressed for 45 years (and they very much wanted the other half); they kept the world on the brink of complete annihilation and they ultimately collapsed as they couldn't even afford bread for the people. ...and the "dictator for life" Putin is trying his best to recreate it. So no, I don't get a boner when I think of Russia/USSR/Putin, nor do I think it is "propaganda" to plainly state the relevant truth.

But it doesn't matter. the damage is done and you've been suckered and that was the object of the exercise all along so it was successful. 2 years on and not a word from Skripal or his daughter. They just vanished into thin air. No interviews no nothing. We don't even know it they ever existed or if they are now dead having been bumped off because they've outlived their purpose and we can't risk having them talk and expose the truth about the case. So it doesn't matter, you and many people like you just blindly swallowed this joke of a story and now have a very negative view of Russia in general and Putin in particular and that was the goal all along. To poison not the Skripals but to poison your opinion.

Regarding Yugoslavia they were not allies and Tito stood aloof and apart from the USSR for pretty much the entire Cold War. The Soviets tried to assassinate Tito several times but gave up in the end. The Serbs, hailing from a constituent state within Yugoslavia, had a natural affinity with the Russians but it hasn't counted for much for nearly a century after the Russians backed them against Imperial Germany. Counted for bugger all when NATO bombed the joint. All that said I like Russia and the people are wonderful if you know but don't be deluded based on a world cup trip. Don't be gay either, or black. They don't approve.
