I am starting this thread about the 67 Variant that I was lucky enough to gain ownership from Alpha Beta.

And so that he can continue with the best thread on boards, his own one:), I will be posting up any relevant info of the variant here from now on.

That must be very satisfying work. With plenty of time to do it, it must bring loads of pleasure looking at the finished piece.

The next patch was for the courtesy light indent,

And the rusted part cut out,

Infil part fabbed up with the indent to turn off the light when the door
is closed, now in place.

Now welded in and most of the grinding done. I will have to use
the dremel to get in close at the door skin edge.

You can just make out the dome of the courtesy light raised indent.

Really interesting thread this, thanks for posting it and updating it as you progress. I, like many other's have mentioned, had/renovated a few air cooled Beetles back in the day. The quality of the steel used in VW's of that era was much better than modern vehicles, I found. Will you be painting the cars /panels yourself too?

When i get that far, I will make a decision. Could do, but a proper spray booth does a great job.

Still working on this door of the white fastback.

The 67 Variant by comparison has nearly perfect doors, 2 of them.

White fastback door corner, marked out for cutting,

There is more filler in this door than glass,

Lots of the crap cut out,

Piece welded in , now I just have to form the curved part below the 90 degree angle,

I would not be doing anything with this door, but I dont have a spare. This one really is way beyond fixing
its more rust in it than is worth the bother to be honest. But I need some type of door until I source one from UK or US.

So onwards and upwards in my search for rust.

Carrying on with the white fastback door, more rust to deal with

The only way to deal with this is cut it out. You cant fill this, as was done previously.
Thats why its as bad as it is.Angle grinder and cutting disc. And in the sharp right angles to the door skin
use a small drill.

Rust removed, and repair piece fabbed up

Welded in and ready for grinding,

Ground down and ready for primer,

Off on another part of me quest to bust rust

Well you have not missed much at the moment, as I am finishing off small details
on the white fastback.Once thats done, I will crack on with the 67 variant.

I have managed to source a high grade paint stripper used in the trade,
so it will intereswting to see how that fairs out. If it works well it will
be far cheaper than 100 euro per panel to media blast it.

I will be stripping the shell anyway of the wings, front and back boot lids,
and doors, so that I can replace the bumper mount support panels.

I will probably take out the engine to get better access to weld in the replacement panels, as I need to fit a new exhaust. Or re weld the old one at the seam, as its massively thicker than the replacement metal.

Ha..Ha..

It was up before and I considered it. Its as bad as the white one I did,
and maybe worse.

Engine and gearbox missing, and apart from the crazy asking price,
and location put me off.

Its a donor car realistically, and only for body parts.

All well thanks.

Nothing new to report on any of the classics at the moment. I got sidetracked with my

daily driver, renault clio. I just finished a timing belt change that was due,

and then new brakes ect ready for the NCT.

Along with a bit of woodturning on a couple of large bowls.

And the only link to vintage of this piece of monkey puzzle, is the age of the

old dude that turned it,me:)

Dont worry I will get back to the variant in mid January, what else would i do in a lockdown:D

Its one thing to see bad rust in the lower parts of doors / sill's etc, but rust in the upper part of the door, as you can see here, thats something else, these areas are not normally prone to rust.

Slightly off topic but I noticed there is a book coming out soon on the VW Type 4.
There are very few of these left in Ireland, maybe just one runner.

They lacked the charm of the type 3's. Due to their oddball nature they never got the following of the other types.
I didn't think anyone would ever write a book about them but there you go.

Type 4 were not at all popular here.

Even the type 3 Variants were given to VW dealers and used as a dealer car
to make them more popular to potential owners.

We had a 412 LE that was a class car, fuel injected engine it was great.
