Removing old copper wire from Eircom

Hi
I have an old copper cable coming into my house from a pole in a back lane. I've never used it since I bought the house 8 years ago. It is inconvenient and ugly and I'm considering getting rid of it. I'm currently with Virgin and I would only consider changing to provider offering a fibre connection.
So my question is how do I go about getting rid of the cable? Is the cable still owned by Eircom? Are they responsible for removing it?
Also, if anybody thinks I'm missing something here please let me know. I just don't see that old tech ever being useful and all the cables going to all the houses make for an ugly mess. I can't control what my neighbors will do but I can start by removing mine.

Are you proposing climbing a pole with a ladder to disconnect, then don't, could be considered criminal damage!

It's only a dropwire, hardly unsightly. Fibre could be delivered in a dropwire from the same pole in future

Of course not. That's the question, how should I go about getting it removed? Does Eircom do it? Or the city councel. Basically who should I contact to get rid of it

I would absolutely not suggest tampering with anything on their poles. First of all you've no permission to do so and it's their property and secondly you can very easily disturb an neighbouring connection, or cause them problems such as a dead short on your own line, or introduce water ingress problems etc etc.

While you might not rate their up-to-100Mbit/s VDSL as much use, if you ever want to get rid of Virgin Media e.g. income drop and go with any one of the ISPs that come in over OpenEir copper, you won't be able to without a load of hassle.

Also, as above, you'll eventually have fibre probably dropped in via the same route.

Is the overhead line THAT much hassle? I mean we've one coming in and you'd barely even see it. It's just a fairly small overhead phone wire.
